Description

He is one of America’s least understood and most underestimated Founding Fathers, the second President of the United States, John Adams. From HBO Films comes this sprawling seven-part miniseries event that depicts the extraordinary life of one of the primary shapers of our independence and government. Starring Paul Giamatti as Adams and Laura Linney as his wife Abigail, the miniseries chronicles the man who played a pivotal role in fostering the American Revolution and laying the building blocks of a republic—but whose legacy has often been eclipsed by more flamboyant contemporaries like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin. Also with Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Dillane, David Morse, Danny Huston, Rufus Sewell, Sarah Polley, Justin Theroux and Guy Henry.

Where are the subtitles? When french is spoke, or Dutch....no subtitles. The DVD version has subtitles. This is clearly a serious oversight. Fix it!

The acting can not be surpassed!! Great mini series and the research that went into making this mini series can only be described as absolute perfection!! Look into Tom Hanks wife who greatly helped the research team the chief exactly what they set out to achieve and then some because of her great unsurpassed knowledge of American history and help greatly she contributed to the mini series. I would meet Tom Hanks and his wife if I was chosen to meet anyone because I respect them so much for such an great love and appreciation for early American history!!

This mini-series delivers on three platforms; it’s historicity, it’s acting, & of great import, it’s ability to make you live John Adams! From the moral & political pressures at the soldiers trial, to the sacrifice borne daily outside the political sphere, family ebbs and floes and woes, and the climatic congressional debates that preceded the Declaration. You live every moment...capturing the emotions, the spirit, the facts, the visionary insight, the culture, the Founding Father’s faith & fortitude in America!!! Thank You HBO for taking my family there in a way our imagination alone couldn’t!

This is a fantastic series that has me watching again and again. It will definitely put our country and the reason it was founded in perspective. For those who feel that the Constitution is not relevant today…you could not be more wrong! Watch this and you will begin to see just how relevant it is today as it was then…Superb!!! is the bottom line.

Although some inaccuracies are noted throughout, this tremendous achievement in television inspires to look further into our past in order to look ahead into our future. Once again, Paul Giamatti proves himself as one of the most talented and understated actors in cinema today. More so, David McCullough is an American treasure and the series serves the book justice.
Watch it, then watch it again and again...and learn.

Thanks again, HBO

I went and bought the amazing book. HBO has done us a great service in providing this series. It was well-done and well-acted. This has to be one of Paul Giamatti's greatest roles, as John Adams. The movie/series was very faithful to the book and faithful to history. The reason I note that: most times movies based on history are just that: "based". This gave me a greater love and appreciation for our founding fathers and the struggles they and soon to be a new nation went through to gain true Independence. Once and awhile HBO does get things right and entertains us as well. Highly recommended!

I purchased the mini series not only for myself but, also for a friend who has enjoyed also. I highly recommend it to all those who love America and its beginnings . I think it should be shown in schools to help students understand how freedom comes with a price and sacrifice . The movie, acting, scenery and costumes are superb. I enjoyed listening to David McColough in the special segment.

I saw this after I read by David McCullough, which this series was based upon. I can't say enough of the quality of acting, the sets and wardrobe but especially the screen plan that did a great justice to McCullough's book. However, I do suggest that you read the book or listen to it in audio format as you will be inspired and enriched all the more by the man John Adams and his wife Abigail.

Another great example of HBO's quality original programming. Not being a regular subscriber, I am thankful it is available via iTunes (as indicated by me coughing up $25 to watch the series).
The acting is great, Paul Giamatti does a wonderful job of playing a revolutionary, showing bubbling contempt and then hatred of the British Crown. You feel Adams' resignation and anguish that bloodshed is inevitable, and necessary.
My only complaint with the show is in the production; they rely heavily on hand-held cameras for some very convincing shots, but the movement can be distracting and almost motion-sickness inducing. It is a great tool for production, I just wish they'd use it with more moderation.

Well done

This series is an outstanding presentation of a tumultuous time in the history of the United States. Showcasing both the positive and negative times within the life of John Adams from his perspective starting long before his presidency and continuing through his life, this miniseries had my teens and I riveted from the get-go. I'd be thrilled if they presented other historical figures in the same fashion.

This is not your elementary school version of history, no marble men in white wigs speechifying well-rounded sentences. No, this is stimulating, truly dramatic and completely authentic -- down to John and Abby's teeth. Paul Giamatti for President!

Gritty and realistic

This is the most accurate, most telling, and most authentic look at the American Revolution ever given through the eyes of someone who by being less popular historically offers the best insight possible. John Adams is an account that speaks to what that period was in reality. It offers true perspective for why the Revolution happened, and why the politics of the late 18th Century are so defining even today. The messages that were carried through then, the civil disobedience, the difficult economy, the geo-politics of the day… all play a part and are all shown in stunning reality.
If any American wants to know what it is to be American, watch this. If you're a student of history, gain perspective. If you just like good tv, enjoy the masterful writing. HBO, thank you. :)
