Description

Note: these original U.K. episodes include scenes not aired in the U.S. Sherlock Holmes was always a modern man - it's the world that got old. Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock is back as he should be: edgy, contemporary, difficult and dangerous. Sherlock can tell a software designer by his tie or an airline pilot by his thumb; he has a unique analytical brain unlike anyone else in the world and has found the best way to stave off boredom is by solving crimes. When a chance encounter brings soldier John Watson into Sherlock's life, it's apparent the two men couldn't be more different, but Sherlock's intellect coupled with John's pragmatism soon forges an unbreakable alliance as they investigate a series of baffling cases together. Drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

After my first viewing of the show I feel absolutely in love with it. I watched the entire series in two days. Cumberbatch plays the role of Sherlock extremely well. The same thing for Freeman with Doctor Watson.
The show is smartly written. If you were a fan of the Sherlock Holmes books (like myself) you'd love BBC'S adaptation of it. The original story is still there, not swallowed by several other side plots.
Over all, I'd give it a 10/10 for are favorite high-functioning sociopath.

This has got to be the most well written shows I've come across in a very long time! The drama is thrilling! The characters are like able and witty! The cinematography is very interesting as well. If you love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories then you should watch this show. Even if you're not too familiar with his work you should still watch this show.

After watching 1 episode of ‘Elementary’ (a very bad american try at Sherlock Holmes), I was very reluctant to sit through another disappointing remake. I am happy I gave this show a chance due to my friend’s recommendation.
This show is brilliant, Benedict is brilliant, I can’t wait for the next season..

I cannot describe the amazing talents this show contains. Benedict Cumberbatch is tied with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, bringing a high-functioning sociopath to life. He is outstanding, superb, you name it! He plays the drug addict, the human, the brilliant side of Sherlock perfectly. There literally could not be a better Sherlock Holmes! Cumberbatch is fantastic! Martin Freeman as John Watson is just amazing. He is the audience, in awe of Sherlock's brilliance. He also very much humanises the show- brings the emotion to the smarts. And let's not forget Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' brilliance. The creators of the show, they are a phenomenal. Moffat is like both a god and a devil. They are amazing writers in every sense!
CANNOT WAIT FOR SEASON 4!!!!

This is a show where you need to watch every episode more than once. The dialogue is utterly brilliant, with many allusions and implied tidbits left for the audience to figure out. The characters are layered, complicated, and very real (I am fortunate enough to know some intense, high-functioning geniuses, and their attitudes are very similar to Mycroft and Sherlock's). The subtle nods to Doyle’s original work scattered throughout the series are wonderful. Every minute detail of the shots are done with care and intent. Pause this show often, and you will see items in the background of scenes that speak volumes about the characters, or reward the audience with easter eggs of one kind or another.
This is very smart TV, written for an engaged audience. The more work you put into figuring out the minute details of the episodes, the more depth the show will reward you with. TV shows like this come along once in a generation. If you have the intensity and attentiveness, don’t miss this one!

I underestimated the brilliance of this show. Benedict Cumberbatch once again proves his acting ability through mastering the personality of Sherlock Holmes by mastering the alternating aliases that he uses to solve his case and by perfectly embodying the deductive skills that are rarely portrayed in such a perfect fashion aside from this show. Mixed with the wit invested in the character traits portrayed by both Watson and Homes, the show displays an ultimate portrayal of the man known as Holmes.

Love at first viewing.

After watching the first episode of Sherlock, I was hopeful this was not the average crime show. But episode 2 proved me wrong.
Sherlock, the complex character we met in episode 1, turns out to be flat and boring. The viewer is forced to just tag along without any reward of mystery. And I mean COME ON, they're in an underground tunnel at the end?! Could this be more trite?
Terrible writing. Not worth 1.5 hrs of your time.

This new, 21st century adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is really good; Martin Freeman is probably one of the best Dr. Watson's out there. Freeman brings a depth to this famous sidekick character that makes him just as interesting as the Holmes character.
This series runs rings around the utter and total drivel of the major motion picture Sherlock Holmes films, which I find just utterly gross and demeaning to Arthur Conan Doyle's work.
Anyway, on to this new series - it is really fabulous. But of course it would be with Steven Moffet at the helm. He has left Dr. Who (and we are suffering because of it) and turned to this great series. Anything with Moffet at the helm of the writing is going to be good.
The characterization of Holmes is spot on. And the developing relationship between Holmes and Watson is entertaining and intriguing. I can't wait for the second series.

WHERE IS IT?! Where is the second season?! I'm bored!
Come on, everyone: this is quite simply the most fantastic portrayal of Holmes and Watson you will ever see, even if it's set on the XXI century. Cumberbatch and Freeman have brought these characters to life in a way that can only be described as 'perfect'. I'm being honest.
Do yourself a favour, and buy this — even if it's not in HD. It'll make your life less dull. This is something new. You won't regret it.
Actually, don't buy this if it's not in HD. I'm sorry, I'm sooo changeable.

I admit, I was a bit wary approaching this. A modern Sherlock Holmes sounded awesome... In theory. I was sincerely worried that it wouldn't turn out too well.
I am very happy to admit I was completely wrong. Besides the excellent casting (Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have amazing chemistry and the rest of the cast is amazing as well), the humor, and the filming, there was the original Sherlock Holmes feel to it. While some things are better when you've read the original series, I showed this to my father and he adored it as well. You don't need any knowledge prior to watching the show.
It is a really charming series that I delight in watching again and again. I'd recommend to anyone, even to people who don't usually like the genre.
I'm anxiously awaiting Season 2.

I'm utterly addicted and obsessed with this series, Benedict Cumberbach, and Martin Freeman.
There may be only 3 episodes but I was hooked in the first minute. I unknowingly watched The Great Game first when it was on tv but even though I had no clue what was going on and who most of the people were (other than Sherlock and John of course) I was immediately turned into a Sherlockian.
If you like mysteries and haven't seen this yet, I highly recommend it.

This is the best Sherlock yet. Same resonant baritone we have come to expect from Holmes, same wonderful deductive reasoning, same athleticism, but in a modern and well done iteration. Jeremy Brett had the aloofness down pat, Basail Rathbone the ernigmatic nature, but Benedict Cumberbatch nails the character in his complex entirety. Very well done. Love it, just love it!

The writers and actors of this series have done a wonderful job of bringing Holmes into the 21st century while still maintaining the essence of the character. I have always been a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and have ready every single Arthur Conan Doyle adventure and I believe Mr. Doyle would be proud. Those who have not read the stories believe that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were two stuffy detectives solving nice clean stories in prim and proper England, a description that could not be further from the truth. I am so happy that the action and thrill of a Holmes adventure is finally being recognized and brought to the screen.

First off, I was prepared NOT to like this series, as I am somewhat of a Sherlock Holmes purist. However, within the first 15 minutes I was hooked! The scripts are extremely well-written, with wonderful references to the original Conan Doyle stories that are placed here and there, like Easter eggs, for Holmes fans to discover.
As far as the main actors, Cumberbatch does a remarkable job. He is a worthy follow up to Jeremy Brett as he carries Holmes into the present century. Martin Freeman is equally wonderful as Dr. Watson, and his association with Holmes is proving to be therapeutic for him as well as providing the adrenalin rushes he seems to need after leaving Afghanistan behind.
All in all, well done. I think both Conan Doyle and Jeremy Brett are smiling down on this latest incarnation of what is arguably the world's most famous duo.

Finally, some creativity and depth!!!

This will be my first review ever posted on ITunes, not because I fear disagreement or don't know what to say, but because I have not found any show that requires the effort. Until now. SH demonstrates a sense of timing, cinematic license, narrative flow and just "plain 'ol" good writing. Yet another example of how the American television show (esp. The first episode was very smart and briskly paced. It was fresh but it was still Sherlock Holmes.
The second episode (Blind Banker) was a dud and with too much of the silliness found in shows like Torchwood.
Hope they get back on track with the 3rd episode.

Brilliant!!

Smart, funny and clever. A wonderful 1 1/2 hour drama! If you're bored with the same old Law and Order, CSI formula, watch this series!

Impressive!

Episode 1: Outstanding! The acting was superb, and the story-line was very engaging! If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you will love this series.

For those wondering, yes, this is the *full* version, not the cut-down PBS aired. Hopefully, this trend continues, and we get the unaired pilot as well. :)

I had my reservations about this show, especially Mr. Cumberbatch playing Holmes. I am a fierce fan of Jeremy Brett's portrayal. After viewing "Study In Pink" I am pretty sure it is safe to say: This show is outstanding. The canon doesn't need another slavish period piece with a too-old actor playing Sherlock. By the way, question for Hollywood: Why are you always casting 50+ year old actors as Holmes? He isn't Dracula. Not that being 50+ makes a person ancient, but lets think about the future a bit! Also, Martin Freeman makes a very likeable Dr. Watson. While the plot was largely original, the episode was saturated with details lifted from Doyle's original "A Study In Scarlet."
Now for some violin music and dinner at Marcini's. Will you be joining me?

When I first heard about this series, I was concerned that it wouldn't maintain the dignity of the original stories. That modern technology and current forensics had made Holmes obsolete. It's no end of delight to me to be mistaken. This holds so true to the stories in the original spirit that they were intended.
Holmes and Watson definitely have chemistry here. Like so many of the people who have played them before. I'm even more delighted to see that they are portrayed as younger men. Because the original stories take place between approximately 1882 and the beginning of world war one. And although there have been splendid actors in the past that have brought an enjoyable experience, the details matter most to me. And its finally good to see Holmes in his modern prime, instead of a fading twilight.
This modern interpretation has its place in the annals of fictional crime busting. The only thing that might make this better is if they began to produce updated Sherlock Holmes novels like this. Based on the original stories, but made for today for a new generation.

Clever, very clever

I was surprised how well they updated the legend. I read the original stories as a child. I watched all the movies. I even enjoyed the Robert Downey Jr version. This reboot of the the story was as well done as I could have hoped for.

Having read many of the original Holmes stories, watching this show was fantastic. I see from your reviews that the PBS version was cut a bit, and I am anxious to save money for the iTunes copies that are complete. There are many inside jokes for fans of Holmes embedded brilliantly into the writing. A study in pink. Lol. The detectives say Rach is german for revenge, and Holmes says the woman was trying to spell Rachel, whereas those opinions are flipped in Conan Doyle's story. This flip takes the story in a much different direction than in the books, but ties back in beautifully with the cabbie and the pill choice (To bad he didn't happen to be from Utah, for those of you who've read the books). They gave Watson a more heroic role early on in this series, as opposed to more of a tag along in the early books. I thought that was a good choice. All and all, a spectacular first episode.

Great Update For Holmes

I have watched every incarnation of Sherlock Holmes and to me this might be even better than the 1940s Basil Rathbones. Have only seen 1st in this series but it was mesmerizing and better than most movies I have seen let alone tv shows. Can not wait until next installment and hope season 2 is more than 3 episodes long and does not take too long to produce.

Thank god, this is the complete version!

I felt kind of angry after watching the PBS version of 'Sherlock' because it was cut to only about 1 hour 22 minutes long.I've already watched the entire series over and over again when it was originally aired in Britain and I think Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis did such a great job that none of these dialogs can be tear apart from this show.PBS did not show enough respect for the writers' work. But luckily iTunes version is the complete version, and now I can put it into my iPod Touch and rewatch it every night :)

I approached last night's debut episode with some trepidation: Holmes just struck me as un-updateable.
I was afraid it would be like some performances of Shakespeare in modern dress - no real reason to do so, just doing it that way as a director's fancy.
I was wrong to doubt. If you love Conan Doyle, if you love a good, fast thriller piece, if you love buddy movies, even if you love House (another self-proclaimed sociopath) -- you will love this show.

My kind of Sherlock!!

I absolutely loved ever minute of this show, although when they are speaking at times, they talk so fast it is somewhat hard to understand! Parts of it are a bit like the The Princess Bride, but nonetheless, a wonderful show :)

Absolutely Brilliant!
