Description

The only people to see the war like this were the ones who fought it. Until now…
Seventy years in the making. Three thousand hours of color footage no one knew existed. The first documentary to show World War II from the perspective of both sides in full, immersive HD color, the world premiere HISTORY™ series WWII in HD uses the diaries of soldiers who fought in the war’s biggest battles to create a personal, introspective and detailed look at life on and off the front lines. Though it was illegal for U.S. soldiers to carry diaries, many hid them away in their packs and recorded their experiences in detail. Now, through the use of these diaries and other source documents, as well as HD color and on-location shooting around the world, WWII in HD transforms their journey into a tangible piece of history. Culled from rare color archival footage from an exhaustive worldwide search and converted to HD with meticulous technique, WWII in HD provides a picture of World War II as it has never been seen before.

I must say that this series is the best WWII documentary I have ever seen. I can watch them over and over. It has true history value for anyone who would like to know more about this clash of all nations. The way it was put together proves that it was well worth the two year search for these video archives. The voice-overs used were perfect, and the artistic liscense used to transition in and out of the actual witness's accounts and their voice-over counter parts was brilliantly done. Wow!

I purchased this item in standard definition on Veterans Day for 16.99 and less than a week later the HD version is listed in the exact same location for 14.99. How does that happen?
I rate WWII in HD 10 stars.
Pretty bush league by Apple to not offer the best price on Veterans Day.

I grew up seeing WWII footage only in black and white. Over the years you lose a sense of reality when you only see things this way. Being able to see what happened in color brought a sense of reality and depth that was just lacking before.
This series is well produced and some of it is just plain hard to see. While others would prefer not to let their children (or teens) to see the violence and horror of war I think it would be beneficial. There's a certain unreality about video games and movies that glorify and exalt fake violence. Seeing it happening for real with real people makes you grapple with the deeper questions. It makes you reflect on war and entertainment. It is good for young people to be confronted with these things and have to deal with them.

One of the greatest WWII documentaries, and I know from the first two that downloaded, but the rest would not. It's probably something I am doing wrong, so can anybody give me advice?

Everyone should take some time to watch this series. I thought I'd buy one episode to see what the footage looked like and a day later I ended up buying the whole season. These men fought to keep not only us, but the entire world free from the reign of a dictator. The History Channel did a great job putting this together and I highly recomend it.

I am frustrated with these TV Shows the closed captioning is not provided on every TV show! None of them! Just found few titles in Movies section! Why? Are we the deaf people and people with hearing loss are not significant as your targeted audience in your market plans? Who are we?

I saw about 25 minutes of this series over memorial day weekend and I was amazed at the footage and the depth. I bought the series yesterday and I have already watched the first 7 episodes because it is so interesting. What an awesome series and it is one of my favorites.

I saw this on TV for the first time this Memorial Day weekend and I was just stunned. Seemed like all the WWII footage I've ever seen before was in B/W. To see it in color brought more impact, as did the personal stories used to tell about WWII. This series really brought alive for me places and terms and battle names that were vague to me before. I'm seriously considering downloading this to watch again.
Wow!

Today I actually proved to my high school students that not all history documentaries are dull. They watched the first episode skeptically for about five minutes, and then I watched them become completely absorbed by it. As with most of the other comments I agree that the narration is excellent, as well as the images and sound, but what really sets this apart for use in a classroom is the telling of the story through the words of those who actually lived it. It becomes real instead of just a story in a book or "yadda yadda yadda" from some university historian talking over the audiences' heads like so many other documentaries have. It was so cool to watch my students actually have emotional reactions to history. What a gift. Thank you History Channel.

Wow! This series is worth every penny! The detail, the time and effort put into finding so much ACTUAL color footage from this conflict must have been breaktaking! The history channel really outdid itself this time, using things such as FDR's fireside chats with the american people to really bring the viewer into what is happening. Can't give it more than 5 stars or I would !

Suprisingly, much of this is colorized, and not color film. Nor is it HD by any definition. The color stuff comes about mostly in the pacific and when showing wounds and medical teams. (might have been for pentagon medical staff use at the time) The ETO stuff is mostly all colorized black and white, which is dissapointing. The PBS series (both Ken Burns' and "The Perilous fight") were far better as historical features. This series uses naratives from actors potraying veterans of the war, which unfortunately, aren't entirely interesting in and of themselves. By the way, the standard def is a better buy, the HD makes no difference. Film quality was soft and grainy at the time, you get what you get.

WOW... It is as good as they say,

This project will be known as one of the best, if not the best, photo-documentary of the great war. Most all the footage I saw was "new" and in excellent color. It takes your breath away and I have seen most all the documentaries and films on the subject. Narratives are excellent with a fitting score, intermixed with radio address of the period shown. BUY BUY BUY!
After watching this whole series AGAIN I am still just astonished. Bravo! Gary Sinise=Patriot
This should be required history in high school.

raw, first hand accounts of some of the bloodiest battles of WWII. The video footage is shocking, but the human element, the voices of those who were there and their personal accounts, is what makes this worth watching.

Please don't mistake this for yet another WW2 series full of the same photos, videos, etc that have become common throughout the years. Coloration, the inclusion of never-before seen footage really accelerate this program beyond the usual presentation of "blodd and guts"..but what REALLY differentiates this from the pack is the narration of Gary Sinise. He has become, at least in my opinion, synonymous with the likes of Will Lyman of Frontline, Sir David Attenborough of The Living Planet, or David Mccullough, who has narrated such iconic classics as Ken Burns "Civil War" or "American Experience". This is a first rate, must have documentary...you won't regret a moment of it...

There's just something stunning—and thought-provoking—about the simple fact of seeing World War II in color. For generations who only know the war from black-and-white newsreels or art-directed movie cinematography, the great cataclysm of the 20th century was unreal. History Channel has a lot of sins, but for the feat of presenting all this color footage in HD (accompanied by some good narration by Gary Sinise and the voice actors) earns the channel its place in the hearts of WW2 buffs.

This documentary does a great job of capturing the mindset of Americans before WWII, how much of a shock it was to be struck by the Japanese, the courage, and the importance of the decisions that were made. It is a great buy, Highly Recommended.
