Description

Jason Weiser tells stories from myths, legends, and folklore that have shaped cultures throughout history. Some, like the stories of Aladdin, King Arthur, and Hercules are stories you think you know, but with surprising origins. Others are stories you might not have heard, but really should. All the stories are sourced from world folklore, but retold for modern ears.
These are stories of wizards, knights, Vikings, dragons, princesses, and kings from the time when the world beyond the map was a dangerous and wonderful place.

..and would listen to it going to bed with my wife, but as the show would go on, the narrator became more and more fascinated with unnecessary descriptions of violence and gore that.. honestly, seem childish and turn me and everyone I know away from casual listening. I’m here to listen to somewhat light-hearted stories, not a monkey torturing a crab like it’s a scene from a Saw movie. Would really enjoy liking your podcast again, but your narratives are too sadistic for me now. Good luck.

Where was this podcast when I was in High School?!

If you’ve ever asked me what my favorite classes were in college, you’ve heard my answer β€œShakespeare’s Tragedies” and β€œGreek Mythology” - neither of which had anything to do with my major. If I could spend my days devouring β€œTitus Andronicus” (β€œdevour”? Yeah I went there) or flipping through my handmade flash cards of the twisted branches of the family tree of Ancient Greek deities, I would be happy as a clam. This podcast is seriously so much fun. For weirdo-nerds like me or not. If I was in in high school or college again I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking out this podcast (or Jason and Carissa’s other podcast β€œFictional”) for whatever piece of text you are studying. For that matter, ANYONE who wants to re-explore classic literature or mythology in a fun, funny, and modern way needs to check out this podcast. Love love love ❀️

My family (38F, 31M, and 12F) loves the Weiser family’s work.
Their research, editing, and presentation skills will keep you engaged in a cohesive storyline with fun, witty, and appropriately cheesy flair in a vernacular that helps younger listeners’ introduction to the concepts and origins of stories with daunting original language.

I can't say enough how much I love this podcast. I've loved mythology from around the world since I was a little boy in 1980s elementary schools, and I even do a myth segment of my own on a podcast. But the way Jason captures these myths and makes them fun and easy to learn and understand is truly a gift. You can tell he spends a lot of time prepping for his weekly show. His love of myth and legend shines in every show, and I look forward to his new episodes every week. Thank you, Jason.

Hi, Jason and Carissa!
I absolutely love your podcast. Thanks for sharing these great stories with the world! It's clear you put a lot of time and passion into each episode. Not only are they well-researched, but they are also subtly hilarious - so many times I've been out walking while listening and burst out laughing, much to the confusion of others on the street! The modern phrasing of old tales really highlights the timeless themes and common humanity of storytelling across time and space.
I wanted to share a cool factoid about jackalopes after listening to episode 129a! While researching papillomaviruses for a lecture, I came across discussions of how the myth of the American jackalope - as well as similarly horned rabbits in German and Persian folklore - could be rooted in the very real symptoms of papillomavirus infections! The virus infects basal epithelial cells (skin cells), and, thanks to the virus's sneaky ability to make cells grow out of control, can lead to the formation of horn-like growths on the skin. To someone stumbling upon an infected rabbit in the woods, these weird growths could absotely look like antlers! Papillomaviruses in rabbits are related to Human papillomaviruses (HPV) as well as other papillomaviruses, which have been found to infect pretty much every vertebrate species. (Though don't worry - the viruses are species-specific, so you can't catch PV from a bunny!) I'm fact, one of the most famous papillomaviruses, Shopes papillomavirus, infects cottontail rabbits and has been instrumental in cancer research since its discovery in the mid-1900s. Isn't it cool when stories, science, and society collide?!
Thanks again for a fantastic podcast - looking forward to many more great episodes!

Lots of value here if you enjoy sarcasm, fairy tales and mythology, and odd creatures.
Jason does a great job rehashing old myths and tales, explaining old stories very well in an entertaining way. His humor will keep you engaged if you appreciate sarcasm over the odd thinking patterns of old characters. It’s quite wonderful to listen to how things were thought through (or not) long ago in ancient times and far away places...unless you’re from those places.
Anyways, highly recommended if you like storytelling and mythology. Keep it up, Jason!

Jason brings the stories to life, adding humor where appropriate but not making serious stories silly. This (and Fictional) are the only requested podcasts by my wife and kids, and we look forward to each new episode.
For this podcast, we really like the wide range of sources of these stories; it’s not just Grimm fairy tales. It’s a treat to hear a new myth or legend.

I love this podcast. The stories, the snark, and the accessibility have just drawn me in to binge-listening. I love classic/world literature but, like most people, I don’t often have the luxury of sitting down to read, analyze, and critically consider all the things I want to read. As a parent of small children, it’s nice that someone else is reading to *me* for a change. :) Thank you for taking some of the world’s greatest stories and making them available to the all of us in a way that is humorous and engaging!
