The stories of people who cross the line are often the most terrifying. And that fear has turned those tales into weapons of a different kind.

host is a turn-off

Aaron seems like a guy who never laughs at anyone else’s jokes but his own, then makes sure the room heard the joke and repeats it if they didn't laugh with him. The kind of hepster guy who loves craft beer and human rights then goes home and mistreats his girlfriend. I listened to about 15 before I was so turned off I turned it off and unsubscribed. He’s pretentious and takes this weird roundabout to his subject matter, and you never know if the blurb by the title has ANYTHING to do with the subject, so you can never really search for a subject you’d like. Example- say someone was killed in a bizarre gardening accident. He’ll go off on a tangent about the meanings of brickwork patterns in the 12th century and how iron has the chemical properties of blah blah blah, and you just want him to get to the freaking actual point instead of sounding so pleased with his esoteric knowledge. Its like he is playing a shell game all the time. "Guess What My Point Is" isn't the point of listening to a podcast. Get out of your own jazz.

Gone to the ads and very slanted opinions on psyche

For years I listened to this and loved it. The stories and the facts the research. Aaron deserved the attention and the funds.
But the last 5 years I hear a lot of ads for 10 min of listening.
Then there the opinions. So the epodes that go to a blame racism instead of seeing the idea through history or even the other thinkings across the world is short sighted or playing to a specific demographic. In Deer he cites Europe and the white color being a racial thing of Christianity supremacy.
I’m very much shorting the whole statement, but for me it shocked me as to knowing from experience how racist some Islamists are and even locally in the USA how Islam supremacy acting some are . I. Know full well not all are this way but it’s there and lore from Arabia in general shows the dangers of religion in general. Religion it sled is humanity’s lore. Good and bad. But AARON seems I do mean seems to put the dark foot of only Caucasian European first. Since it’s been a decade and the broad thinking seems to be narrowing . I need to leave . I guess my idea of lore has changed to viewing it from a very different perspective and not just a lense of European equals racism.
Just the idea I get from how and what he says.

Disappointed

I really loved this show, I’ve been a fan since I was in high school way back when the show first started. I am a poor 20 something, I can’t afford to pay for podcasts. The entire catalogue being put behind a paywall is really surprising and disappointing. I know a lot of people work hard to make this show and they deserve to be compensated but to restrict old content that used to be free just feels kinda mean. Hope they change this decision.

Full of contempt

Aaron really does think a lot of himself. In 2016, this was a really good podcast. Now it’s a self-righteous cash grab.
There are better podcasts to support.

NO LONGER FREE

I’ve been listening since the beginning and I love listening to all the episodes again and again. Yet now I have to pay. Poor love Aaron Mahnke. This is the way of the world now and I’m not getting on board.

Long time listener, but not anymore

I’ve been listening to this podcast since 2016, since it started. I’ve listened to it in its entirety multiple times, it’s a comfort show for me. So imagine my shock one night when I go to put on an episode, and every single episode is now subscription only. I didn’t mind listening to the ads. I understand this project needs to make money, but this feels like a major slap in the face, especially after listening for so long. I’ve sold my tickets to the live shows. I no longer want anything to do with Grim and Mild.

Don’t bother with this podcast unless you want to spend money

I have no idea when this change happened, but as a long time listener of this show since the beginning I am really disappointed to see this one go. If you decide to pick up this podcast, you’ll have access to less than a year’s worth of episodes unless you decide to subscribe to the podcast. This move of outright greed has me saying goodbye to Lore. It’s been a phenomenal ride up until now, but I refuse to spend money to listen to older episodes. It’s a very well made podcast, but I will not be paying for a service that was free as of a week ago.

This is a great podcast,I have been listening to this podcast every day since 2015. I go back and listen to old episodes as my clam before bed. And now I can’t. I am disappointed.

Wovoka, Ghost Dance, Sitting Bull,

This was one of the best episodes I’ve heard. Thank you for sharing the true history of the Lakota massacre and the foundational creation of the Ghost Dance. The way it was respectfully shared and in depth. Thank you for sharing this history during the fearful times we are in.

Moralizing.

This podcast used to be fantastic, but it’s gotten all but impossible to listen to now. It started out spooky and interesting and now just feels like a passive-aggressive rant gussied up with macabre history. It feels more and more like a self-righteous lecture than a podcast. You can tell he considers himself smarter than most of his listeners.

History & Folklore is political by nature

“I don’t want politics in my podcast about the history behind folklore >:(”
History is just recorded politics. It’s whose views were empowered and whose were oppressed. Folklore is all of that wrapped up in stories and symbology. History is inherently political. Aaron gives it plainly, he gives the reasons behind the stories.

Once a Long Time Lister… Not Anymore

Lore was my weekly “go-to” podcast. I couldn’t wait until Mondays. Now, Aaron has injected his not-too-subtle political views and conservative-shaming opinions in the good stories.
The best storytelling invites and takes everyone on the journey regardless of one’s personal preferences and conceptual perspectives. Manhnke seems to only want the woke and progressive on the journey with him in the exploration of lore and legends where the “white”’and “patriarchy” are the oppressors as well as the villains.
This white, cisgender, conservative, Christian, male no longer feels welcome on Lore’s journey. So many conservative, biblically minded podcasts dedicated to the paranormal, legends, and storytelling is available (I.e. Blurry Creatures, Haunted Cosmos, The Confessionals, and Ninjas are Butterflies).
Aaron! If you drop the liberal drab, I will come back, but until then- “bye.”

Former plus member

I love the production and stories, but lately, there’s been a strong current of politics in the narration. I don’t listen to podcasts for political commentary. The more podcasters insist on injecting their opinions into their stories, the less inclined I am to support them monetarily.

The Perfect Podcast

I started listening somewhere around Episode 50 and I’ve waited some time before writing this review. This may sound nuts, but for years this was the only thing that could distract my brain enough to let me fall asleep. I’ve struggled with insomnia a long time and this podcast is a gift. Beautiful soft music lulls your neurons while Aaron’s smooth story telling keeps my attention reducing ruminating thoughts. If you’ve got about half an hour give your brain a little vacation and listen to the art of storytelling reimagined. Thank you, Aaron. Also, more long-form please. Bring back unobscured!

Obviously supported by the CCP and anti-Semitic

It’s funny how every and I mean every episode is underlined by the same underlying story of European colonialism, or underlying victim shaming of Jews. Good stories that come up, however anyone with critical thinking abilities can see that this is likely funded by the CCP to try and undermine logical thinking. While the stories chosen are good, I plead for people to please think independently and not allow the narrative to steer you to hating the society which has given so much.

Audio Cut off on older episodes

Not sure if it’s because older episodes are currently being remastered, but I’ve been listening from the beginning and many cut off around the last few minutes and it’s frustrating. Hope this gets clarified or fixed because it’s a compelling and perfect summer spooky listen.

Has fallen off recently

I have been listening to Lore since the beginning of its creation. Aaron Mahnke is a great storyteller and I used to listen to all his creations. However recently with the influx of ADs and political statements and rhetoric on some of the stories where it’s not relevant I am no longer interested in hearing it. People are tired of the narratives and alternative motives. We like the stories and the histories but side tracking with random opinions/political statements is not needed.

Bad historical facts

Interesting how you called the Kingdom of Jerusalem, “Israel” when no such place existed during the Holy Roman Crusades. It was the Islamic Kingdom of Jerusalem, in PALESTINE. Nice try, especially in your show about “propaganda.” 0/5, two thumbs down

Going Woke

A few years ago I’d have given this pod 5 stars, but Aaron has really gotten bit by the woke bug the past couple years. The most recent ep., “Long Live The King” may be the worst yet of his “white man bad” rhetoric. Instead of just covering what the crusades were about he has to throw in snide remarks and biases. Just give us the details and keep your biases out of it. I’m sure he’d never utter a negative word about Islam which has the same goal even today that the Crusades had 1000 years ago.

Going downhill

It was much better when they weren’t spam posting 5 minute episodes every day. They have 4 or 5 different series going under one podcast, can’t you just separate them? Why would lore bites and lore legends and deeper lore need to be in the same place? Honestly it’s pointless to upload 5 minute podcasts, this isn’t TikTok

Yikes

I’ve listened to Lore for years. Aaron and his people put together a great show, but I resent all the mini episodes stuffed between regular episodes. The format is halting and just increases the ratio of ads and recycled spiels with only a morsel of substance. I’d rather unfollow altogether than be driven to a premium plan with this junk.

Audio quality keeps getting worse

First I love the content. Long time subscriber and listener. So the reason for 2 versus 5 stars over the past year the audio quality seems to be degrading, even when I download first.
Other podcasts sound great. Whats happening?

Scary Stories to hear in your car

The stories are fun enough but the host believes in anything and everything regardless of the evidence against. He even presents the evidence refuting the story and then says some variation of “others think it was [supernatural theory] so who knows?”
