Mike gracefully stumbles into a remarkable story tying together the lives and antics of curious characters from all across the Atlantic. It is tragic, heroic, and most importantly, revolutionary.
It took him like 10 years to write and produce this podcast. It was worth it. Historians will cite it as they do Gibbons.

I have now listened to all of both Revolutions and History of Rome and read one of Duncan’s books and I am a big fan.

For hundreds of hours I’ve listened to Mike Duncan on walks with my newborn child. I am very grateful that my mundane strolling around town is turned into intellectual moments. Thank you so very much!

About halfway through the final season on the Russian revolution and although it's helpful for broad brushstrokes, I'm also reading a scholarly history book on the same topic and I have to say, Mike's biases against the Bolsheviks and his sympathetic attitude towards certain reactionary figures in this story are pretty disappointing (and border on misinformation at times). I realized that I was listening to a centrist's account of revolutions when in the same episode Mike says the sentences "Tsar Nicholas II was a good and kind person" and "he was extremely antisemitic..."

Great podcast!

What Mike Duncan took 10 years to produce I’ve listened to in 3. Don’t take that to mean I was bored with it because every episode of this is gold; I’m just easily distracted.
This is a fantastic investment from the Ken Griffey Jr. of history podcasters; maybe I undersold that a little? Mike can tell you if I did or not.
Anyway, listen to this podcast. It’s a sobering experience as you see the heights and depths of our shared history of revolutions.

Compelling and insightful.

This is the best history podcast I have ever heard. I love it, and it is so immersive. I am only a kid, and that attributes to saying how awesome this is, for all audiences. I am done with it, and I think you should do Greek Independence or do the Cuban Revolution. If you give this less than 4 stars, you are a [something my mom would wash my mouth with soap for saying]. I am 12, this is amazing. So great. His books are great too. He also has a great voice compared to some podcasters and audiobook readers. GREATEST I HAVE EVER heard. Don’t criticize his adds or political views, don’t let that get in the way of a great podcast , no matter what you think. I love it so much I have been listening to it every day. I am told that I should marry it, I love it so much

Found this when I wanted a concise run through of the Russian Revolution and didn’t know I could enjoy a history podcast so much! Most negative reviews of this podcast focus on Mike’s personal political views or something he said in a single episode that offended someone or about his book promotions (those are jokes for his longtime listeners, and Mike’s books are great).
Mike Duncan does an excellent job keeping his own politics out of the history he’s telling. And if it’s telling from the reviews he’s offended both right and left, which is a sign of good presentation.
If you’re looking for a history podcast, you can’t do better. Mike Duncan is a master craftsman who built this genre from the ground up back in the early days of podcasting. I can’t recommend him enough.

Mike I hope you reconsider this plan to do basically what sounds like an NPR “book worm” show where two progressives give the rest of us yet another patronizing lecture on what they think of this or that book. Sounds absolutely awful and unlistenable. Let me save you from this crazy idea- don’t do it!
Just coming across your Twitter, it’s too partisan for me. I don’t believe people want more of that.
Instead take 6 months rest with the family and come up with a suitable subject and even include Alexis if that’s what you want. Save this review- you’ll thank me later.
Regardless, I enjoyed years of this Podcast and thought you did a great job and want to thank you for a job well done!

What more can be said about this amazing podcast? I’ve listened to most of this show’s seasons multiple times (the French Revolution four times now) and will definitely be listening to them again in the (most likely near) future. This is as good as podcasts get.

I have listened to every word Mike Duncan has recorded for over a decade. He is truly one of those people who made podcasts what they have become. The Revolutions podcast is probably one of the greatest things he ever did not just for the sheer amount of history and material he covered, but also for his wry humor and humility, and the way he was able to condense it, make it, understandable, engage with his audience, and direct listeners to the places where you could succeed in making a deeper dive into the historical subjects. Bravo.

Both of Mike’s books are great and his podcasting style and attention to detail is incredible. He’s definitely one of the giants of historical podcasting. I just wish he didn’t stop with the Russian Revolution, but I really can’t blame him for it after years and years of dedication to the topic.

About 8 years ago, a friend and I were randomly chatting about history. When he found out we were both fans of the topic, both amateur students in a way, he recommended Mike Duncan’s The History of Rome. “Bro, it’s really long but wow you learn so much and his voice is incredible! Also, it gets better as you go along!” I was not disappointed. Duncan’s first podcast provided detailed accounts of one of the great civilizations of human history in short, digestible chunks that I could listen to on my commute or at the gym. It was the first podcast I ever subscribed to.
A few years later, Mike finished Rome and moved on to Revolutions, and wow! This entire saga has been a masterpiece. While maintaining relatively short episodes, averaging 30-50 mins, he detailed over not just the events of several major revolutions, but the causes, the histories, how the global situation affected and was interwoven with local events, the aftermath, and you walk away feeling far, far more informed.
His series on Haiti was absolutely mind opening and heartbreaking, a revolutionary story not nearly as well known as France, the United States, or Russia.
To cap it all off, Mike spent the past three years largely focused on the Russian Revolution, one of the most impactful and complex in modern history. But more than simply telling their tale, by placing this revolution at the end, we see how the previous events in France, South America, Germany, England, and other places he discussed all influenced Russian revolutionaries, leading to the final breakdown of ancient monarchical empires at the beginning of the 20th century, setting the stage for our modern global order.
This massive podcast may seem daunting to get into, but its smaller, digestible chunks are easy to approach, Duncan’s voice soothing and reassuring, and soon you’ll be engrossed in the stories that have shaped our world for the past four centuries!

Thank you my Teacher

Mike Duncan offers a deep dive into his subject matter. While I often feel as though I need to take notes from the amount of information given, his natural charm, self-deprecating humor, and genuine concern for the people he discusses keeps me engaged in even the most complex subjects. He is transparent in his choices and evaluations, avoiding the didactic pronouncements of so many historical commentators, and his writing is eloquent and his voice warm and engaging. Plus, the accompanying martial music is great for mopping floors and washing dishes.

I love the show and it should go without saying that I greatly respect and appreciate your research and analysis. I’m sorry it’s all wrapping up. My one overriding question is, why does it seem like the American revolution bucks all the trends and seemingly avoided the “problems” that you so eloquently describe seen as a pattern in other revolutions? Or am I missing something?

Thank you Mike!

Mike Duncan does a superb job of researching and retelling, as the title gives away, the histories of various revolutions. The content is well chosen and his easy and self deprecating. This and his earlier History of Rome series are my favorite podcasts. My only regret is having come across them nearly a decade after he ended one and started the other. 6 stars if the grading system allowed for it.
