I listened to the first episode and found the lack of preparation astounding. The hosts were discussing a case for which one of them was on the jury. At the end, they realize that the host not on the jury had read an article about the case for which the other host was interviewed. REALLY? You decided to record a podcast without discussing the case with each other beforehand? I'm not even sure what the point of this podcast is. It was just two dudes rambling about a topic neither seem to know anything about and providing no insight.
They also both talk very slow and monotone. Honestly, it was like listening to two stoners in a college dorm.

Love these guys!

This was the first podcast that I listened to and loved so much that I went back through and listened to all their previous episodes. I think they do a great job telling the stories, as well as analyzing, commenting, and theorizing on what is going on in each episode. There is a lot to love if you are into true crime. Check out their Patreon, too!

I like the podcast material but one of the hosts presents the material strangely. He says things like "he will go through the house, he will try to steal what he can"
It's a past event that has happened. He did go through the house, he did try to steal. It's annoying and makes it hard to listen.

I enjoy the podcast enough. Sometimes the flow of conversation seems forced. It's not a bad podcast overall. One thing I found bothersome on the night stalker pt 1 episode, I think it was Justin that was describing all the crimes that were committed. He kept saying 'he will'...do this. Every moment doesn't need 'he will' before it. Past tense is much better in my opinion. I had to stop listening to it. I'm trying pt 2 now. Hopefully it's better.
Update: I have to unsubscribe. I can't handle the 'he will'. It's in all podcasts.

I really want to love this podcast as they cover some really fascinating subjects that I want to learn more about, but unfortunately I often know more about the subjects than the hosts. Inaccurate assumptions are made on numerous subjects that could have been avoided with more research, and the sound production is at times so poor that it's a major distraction.

Maybe it's just in the early episodes (which I'm going through now) - love the topics and find the podcast interesting and am still listening, but you guys seem to laugh at the most inappropriate times. Not sure if it's a nervous thing or what, but when your talking about someone dying and giggle a little, it's uncomfortable...

I like it that the podcast isn't super glib and "professional." It's spontaneous and has a common sensibility.
I have listened to several episodes but not even close to all of them. My preloaded iPhone app won't let me write a review after I subscribe so I'm basing this on my first impressions.
I like the occasional inclusion of paranormal topics like Mothman and the Enfield poltergeist. I plan to subscribe.

Not a lot of "fluff" on these podcast episodes. The hosts are both likable and do good research on the topics discussed. I'm personally not a fan of the more superstitious episodes, but the episodes that cover murders are quite good.

You can think the U.S. Government messed up and still be deeply disturbed by this episode.
Problems with this episode:
-Never mention the U.S. Marshall's name who was killed by the Weavers.
- it's okay to violate the law if you think it's stupid.
-it's okay to shoot first if the government is on your property.
-nothing wrong with being a member of the Aryan brotherhood.
- threats to kill police officers should be treated as "yelp reviews."
- Randy Weaver was a "good guy," a "nice guy", and a "rebel."
Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, both hosts at various points said they were on Randy Weaver's side, but the material in this episode could have been treated in a much more even handed way, but it wasn't. Excuses were constantly made for Randy Weaver while the government was constantly derided for being liars and killers. Just a truly bizarre episode. I wouldn't recommend this podcast to anyone I know.

More than one occasion I have found their stores to be lacking in research. When I looked up these cases on my own I see they have left of things like DNA testing that had proved and guilt or innocence. In addition they seem to make a lot of assumptions about places they've never been to or experienced.

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, and the Generation Why must be at the top of my list. These guys are great to listen to, great research, great stories, they don't waste time talking about unrelated stuff and I don't have to listen to inane banter like on some other podcasts. Horrible research & they're racists (George Zimmerman apologists)

They have no understanding or respect for marginalized communities. They defend George Zimmerman. They use the phrase "all lives matter." I'm so glad these ignorant schmucks don't have a top 150 podcast anymore. They used to be in the top 100! If you have any comprehension of white privilege, you won't like this podcast. These are two very ignorant Midwestern "values" kind of hosts, though one claims that he doesn't trust cops very much. Oh, really? Sure sounds like it...
Their understanding of both the criminal justice system and its issues is so minuscule it's laughable. They also are always commenting on how one of them doesn't trust cops but they sound super pro-cop, pro-establishment in each case they "analyze."
I realize they are not experts, but To The Hosts: Do better research, open your minds, learn to think critically, and realize that as your subscriber based grows you're affecting more and more people's understanding of and interpretation of facts. You have the potential to do serious damage if you're not careful...

I really wanted to love this, because in theory it should be a really fun show, but oh my god the hosts have to be the most boring people to listen to of all time. They have no personality and sound like they’re just reading what they’re saying off of a sheet of paper. I sorted the episodes by most popular and listened to a recent one, but I couldn’t even make it through more than 15 minutes because it was so poorly put together and boring to listen to.

Misogynistic schlock.

In the "Pretty Maria" episode, not only is the production value extremely low, but two adult men sitting around victim-blaming a murdered 7-year-old girl for her sexual assault is disturbing and unnecessary for ANYONE to listen to.

I want to like this one, but the hosts too often make confident proclamations that are simply wrong. I could more easily accept this if they couched their thoughts as possibilities, but instead they present their opinions as incontrovertible facts. I hate to say it, but you aren't as smart as you think you are, fellas.

The first show I heard was the Ramsey case, was blown away, really interesting stuff. I went on to listen to Hayman Lee case, they didn't do their homework. Benefit of the doubt. Onto George Zimmerman then to Kurt Cobain. I truly appreciate their unbiased approach, I do but when all is said and done, it truly feels to me they end up saying the complete opposite of the truth or discount evidence to fit their view. I finally had to turn it off in the middle of the George Zimmerman episode when one of them were talking about the black lives mater movement. One of them said that black people feel they have been oppressed. "Feel like" after hearing this, I wonder if these guys are educated at all or if they are in the Midwest or the south still living in the 1990's.

I listened to the first 10 minutes of these guys' "analysis" of the OJ murders and counted at least 6 factual blunders. If you're going to discuss one of the most publicized murder cases in history, it shouldn't be too difficult to do some homework first. I'm sorry, but it was as if they did zero show prep whatsoever for this episode. What's the point of doing a podcast if you're not going to be prepared?

I do enjoy this podcast...but it has some issues.
It's hard to enjoy an episode if you don't already know the details of the crime being discussed. The two guys who do the podcast don't do a totally excellent job of going through the crime's details step by step before launching into their own takes on the events. And I do enjoy hearing their takes, but I have to go in knowing quite a bit about the crimes already in order to follow them.
The addition of some more music and some audio clips (when necessary) would be great.
I was slightly bothered by their comments in the initial Amanda Knox episode. At one point, Aaron (I think?) says something like, "Well, if you know a woman and her best friend dies, she won't be..." and then proceeds to describe what "a woman" would do when met with tragedy. It just felt a bit generalized. Occasionally there are moments when the two guys (particularly Aaron) reveal themselves to be less than thoughtful about issues of gender and sexuality. It might help if they brought a woman on full time to do the podcast with them.
All this being said, I do enjoy the podcast. I hope they'll do an episode where they express their thoughts on the Hae Min Lee murder. And maybe also an episode on the Taconic Parkway crash.

First off these two seem to skim the wikipedia pages of the crimes and stories they talk about. They bring up evidence and points that have already been disproven or shown to not matter to the crime. Another thing, They... both... talk... like..... this. Sometimes they speed up..... but then there.... is a pause..... and there is just.... silence. Finally they make jokes and laugh about these crimes. haha a child is dead very funny.
Honestly if you read the Wikipedia page on the stuff they cover you'll see how uninformed they truly are. They don't uncover any new evidence or interview anyone important. They just provide a factually incorrect summary and their uninformed views on the case.

I can't get enough of The Generation Why podcast! They cover topics that really make you think about things and leave you wondering what REALLY happened.
The criminal cases are scary and mysterious, and rarely cut and dry. The hosts do a fabulous job of letting the story take you on the twists and turns as they lay out the facts and they usually end with their own personal opinions of the topic at hand. All-in-all its s great podcast for true crime lovers and I am so happy I found it!!

I found this podcast messy, unprepared and ill-researched. Unlistenable. I listened to two episodes, Jodi arias and Casey Anthony because I am familiar with the cases and thought I would enjoy listening to. However, I was put off by the lack of format. They just jumped from one idea to another and it was hard to follow what happened linearly. They weren't confident in anything they were speaking of. The amount of times they said "I think???" Or corrected each other on major details of the case was so incredibly frustrating. Aren't you prepared before you hit record? I don't think either of these men know what they're talking about at all.
Also, in the Casey Anthony episode one of them mentions dr Phil in passing and says "I use the term doctor loosely". He's a doctor. He has a PHD. It's like you can't get ANY information right, it's unbelievable.

These guys have great topics and a good idea for podcasts, but unfortunately they fall short in 2 ways. 1. The audio is not very good on the podcast, there is echoing and some of the discussion isn't very clear. 2. They show their amateurs based on the limited research they do. If you are going to post something that can be listened to by so many people , ensure you've become an expert on the topic.
By fixing those two items I think they could be good, but for now I am not a subscriber.

I barely made it through 10 minutes.

I started listening to the episode about the JFK assassination. I was expecting a thought provoking conversation with legitimate questions on the facts of the case. What I heard was anything but what the marketing materials would have you believe. This was not a cutting edge intellectual examination. It was a rehash of the same diatribe the government has been forcing down our throats for over 50 years.
"Hollywood is to blame for our misconceptions about what happens when someone is shot" Really? I didn't realize that when someone is shot from the front they fall on their belly. "Bullets can do crazy things" translation = magic bullets do exist, I PROMISE!
I saw where these two were going, down the perennial Lee Harvey Oswald did it alone and to believe otherwise equates you to UFOs, Elvis is Alive and, we never landed on the moon.
Maybe I'm wrong, like I said I could not make it past 10 minutes.

This podcast is simply superb. Their guests are fascinating, always with innovative takes on well known stories. Both narrators have good senses of appropriate humor despite the tragic, oftentimes unsolved stories, and the podcast length (about an hour) is perfect to fully explore a subject. I've been an avid listener to all of the relevant unsolved mystery/murder podcasts currently available (Criminal, Sword & Scale, Thinking Sideways, and a host of others) but Generation Why is my clear favorite. It's not only the best of the genre but suggest to you it's in the top 1% of all content regardless of genre. Enjoy

Catch it now. While at present the show can't be called great, it's very good. And it has great moments. Right now the show is handicapped by the gentlemen searching for their true niche, and by time. By "time" I mean having the time to do more than skim books on a subject with which they are not familiar. When the time comes these guys feel they can make a 100% commitment to the show, watch out!
It's hardly fair to get too tough on people because they need to make a living, and consider how good this show is at present when it plays to its two obvious strengths: 1) shows on open criminal matters; 2) interviewing authors.
These gentlemen also deserve kudos for being nice, genuine folk and for caring about their listeners.

The content might be good but how boring! Maybe I'm pampered radiolab, serial, etc, but this needs a lot more post-editing to make it bearable.

I really want to like it...

...but I find the hosts to be unlistenable. These topics should be so interesting but I find myself being lulled to sleep by the dull, Ben Stein-like quality of their voices. It could just be the two episodes I tried but it was enough to turn me off of the podcast completely.

If you like unsolved mysteries and true crime stories, give this pod a chance. The conversational tone and Justin's mix of skepticism with Aaron's matter-of-fact delivery make for an enjoyable listen. No frills production, spooky and well researched subject matter and charming hosts, this pod is one of my favorites on my commute to work.

Interesting Discussion

I think the best part is the rational and calm discussion of these cases. So often people want to play up the drama, exaggerate and sell some authors book about the case. The hosts don't get emotional and make judgements based on. They stay fact and evidence based in their opinions. I'm so tried of people getting emotional and disregarding evidence because it doesn't support their feelings agenda. Good job guys, you deliver a genuine podcast that doesn't just make you feel like it's a sales pitch for someone's book.

Good show, just speak to your listeners.

For fans of true crime, this podcast is what you've been looking for. The hosts have found a way to keep me interested in just about every episode. My only complaint, is one that many podcasts seem to suffer from: not speaking TO your audience! As a LONG time listener of talk radio, I find that many podcast hosts talk to each other or to their guest, in conversation, rather than to the audience. It's not a volume/sound issue, but more an issue w/talking directly and clearly into the microphone and speak TO the audience. Go listen to podcasts from major players and you'll see what I'm talking about. Like terrestrial talk radio or not, there is a way to speak TO the audience, even if you can't see them. I believe this show will get better over time. Keep up good work!

A good listen

My critique would be that they are all over the place when they start the discussion, assuming their listeners know the basic facts of each case, and they frequently launch into a discussion of some minutia that would be better saved for once they set the scenario. Also, I do notice the rather inappropriate (nervous?) laughter by one of the guys and it puts me off. I would still listen.

Fantastic!!

I found this podcast while doing research on Ted Bundy. Halfway through the episode, I was hooked; subscribed and downloading older episodes.
Since then, I’ve been working my way through the list and loving every minute of it. They’re the right mix of solid research, interesting opinions, with moments of humor and seriousness. Even topics I had only mild interest in were engaging and entertaining! Unlike other podcasts where everything seems last minute, you get the impression they put time and effort into making each episode good. It’s organized, smoothly presented, and the production quality is excellent.
If you like Caustic Soda, you’ll enjoy this.

AMAZING podcast, but...

The random bits of laughter in moments that aren't at all funny is unsettling, and honestly a little disturbing. I'm all for making jokes to lighten up dark topics, don't get me wrong, but straight up laughing for no reason whatsoever is off putting. Regardless, the show is great and you do a great job going into these topics in depth, and you make it much more interesting than just reading about it would be.

I like it!

I really enjoy this podcast; the only reason why I didn't give it five stars is because I don't quite understanding the "laughing" between some of the transitions. It just seems rather sophmoric.

This podcast is hard to listen to. These two guys have great topics, but they're complete amateurs. Mediocre research when it comes to the topics that they discuss, as well as a severe lack of understanding when it comes to the law.

Love it, most of the time.

Love that these guys are local. Love that these guys approach sensationalized topics so rationally. Love that they really do their research. Love that they're open minded.
That said I think there are still some things they need to check themselves on, mostly tone. For an example see the podcast on Jon Benet Ramsey where one host has these strange outbursts of laughter that at times was pretty unsettling for the case at hand. Maybe he was nervous, I don't know but maybe a little more tact is needed in the matters.

Interesting

I enjoy the podcast because the guys have done some topics that have not been hammered to death. The only criticism I have is the nervous laughter at incredibly odd times. It kind of throws me when, for example, they are discussing the death of a child at the hands of some nut and one of them laughs. Other than that, the show is pretty good.

Love it

“Balloons are basically satellites.” I just about hit the delete button on that one. These two guys HAVE put together a very listenable podcast. I just can’t go the five stars after that comment.
