For a right hander who cannot visualize anything that isn't in front of me, Podcast constantly surprises me with its insights. Very high production values, which, unfortunately, necessarily means that up to 25% of the content is sometimes promotional/sponsor content, which can get tiresome. Otherwise, a great, relatively short-form podcast that also opens the listener up to other podcasts from time to time.

This podcast always makes me smile. Short informative episodes. I've re-listened to many of them so I can be sure I get the info right when I tell my friends about the fascinating things I learn. (Why are building floors called stories? Origin of the teddy bear (and BILLY POSSUM!), the pound sign, and basketball's shot clock, and sanctuary cities.) This doesn't begin to get at the full list of my favorite episodes.

I stopped listening when you started inputting your bullsh*t left wing comments into a great podcast about architecture. Then went and made another communist podcast that the left wing Apple is saying is #2 yet everyone is giving it 1 star. Executive overreach yet you were on knees in front of Obama for 8 years while he did just that? Go f**k yourself and leave this place if it's so bad. Liberalism will fail you 100% of the time. You're pathetic.

Roman does a good job of storytelling. His latest recording of President Trump and Constituional Law is definitely created to entertain the politically progressive left. After eight years of President Obama ignoring the Constitution, picking and choosing which laws he would inforce and which laws he would ignore, Roman thinks now is a good time to highlight our current president playing fast and loose with Constituional law. What gives Roman Mars? Where's the balance? An honest approach to how our U.S. politicians handle the Constitution would be refreshing and informative, but perhaps that's not on your agenda.

Most of my existential crises start when I try to remember what I used to talk about before I discovered 99% Invisible. Each episode is a stand-alone masterpiece, but that's not going to stop you from going back to the very beginning and listening to every single one - in order, not because the order matters, but because you don't want to miss anything. I don't know if it's the brilliant writing, the flawless production, or the weird-as-hell background music that I would never listen to by itself but somehow makes perfect sense with Roman Mars's undeniably sexy voice draped over it like a cashmere afghan, but I really, really love this show. I think the magic of 99% Invisible is somewhere in the infinitely captivating disconnect between the show's fundamental visual content and it's fundamentally "blind" format, and that moves me -- like, physically moves me. I mean, I've definitely cried during a few episodes, but I'm talking about how the show makes you want to track down and stare at everything it talks about, in person or online. Every time I travel somewhere new I double-check to see if there's a 99pi site within range. I would have never predicted that podcast pilgrimages would end up being one of my favorite hobbies, but here we are anyway.
My only asterisk in recommending this podcast as enthusiastically as possible to everyone and anyone is this: if you're going to listen to this show in the car, make sure that the drive is going to last longer than the episode -- because if you get where you're going before Roman gets to the end of the story, I promise that you're going to sit there in the driveway with the engine running until it's over, and that's super bad for the environment. Listen responsibly, but -- seriously -- listen.

99% Invisible is a gem of a podcast. It's well-produced and extremely well-edited. That last part is important. Stories are exactly as long as they need to be. Many podcasts have a habit of meandering, but 99% Invisible is wonderfully concise without losing heart or inquiry. It's one of the best shows you can put on your feed.

This is one of the more intriguing podcasts that I listen to. Clear, and succinct, this podcast features reflections on how design helps shape the world around us. I appreciate the breadth of this podcast--reflections on everything from architecture to the composition of charts and graphs--which is only possible because of its laser focus on communicating the importance of intentionality in design.
Easily listenable on the way to work or the grocery story, and well worth your time.

Luckily, this isn't some preachy theory-laden podcast full of principles, mandates, or other design finger-wagging. Rather, it's a beautifully produced soundscape that illustrates some aspect of (usually good) design through a coherent story about something real. It would be worth listening to just for the content, but it's a can't miss with the often haunting use of music, voice, and atmospheric sounds to enhance the telling of the tale.

I am a fan and longtime life student of design, in all forms: experiences, products, services, places - you name it, I love to dissect how it was made, and the thought that went into it. Roman Mars does an excellent low-key job of explaining complex design processes, making the show interesting and informative. It's helped me develop opinions (without dictating them to me) about many design topics. The two most interesting episodes have been on concrete furniture and cul-de-sacs. If you asked me before, what are the most interesting design podcast topics, I'd never have answered "cast concrete furniture and suburban neighborhood design." So it just goes to show you that not only can complex design topics be interesting, but a podcast about them can be well-designed, too. Thanks, Roman.

Roman has a way of explaining things that is so concise and straightforward that he can make the more complicated concepts give up their basic tenets in just a couple of sentences. I wasn't sure if I was particularly into design before I heard this podcast, and the production and funny sound clips totally drew me in. Good:
- The material is engaging and novel. It's exactly the kind of thing one looks for in a podcast or radio program. There's at least one bit of information that I take away from each one that I want to share with someone else. It seems that people in general are much more cognizant of design (along with issues of sustainability and the like) than they were before, and I think 99% Invisible can really capitalize on this zeitgeist.
- The size. When dreaming about starting my own podcast, the length is very important. Full-length shows that run 45min+ seem burdensome at times, so that 99% seems to have a strict time limit is refreshing. The basis of the program, I think, does appeal to a specific kind of person on the one hand, but on the other, its digestible size makes it easier to listen to. Over time, it's likely that the shows will get longer and longer, as seems be the case with other podcasts that were originally short, so it'll be interesting to see if 99% can maintain this format.
- The music selection and editing choices are interesting. They have a youthful and educated vibe. It's charming and vaguely familiar like TAL's motifs, but still fresh enough to capture the gestalt of the program.
The improvable:
- Because of the time constraints, a lot of it seems rushed. The best-edited shows, in my opinion, allow the ideas to breathe on their own. Having just listened to four of the five existing shows, it feels like Roman Mars is just reading. It doesn't feel like he's talking to the listener and leading her along. Oftentimes it feels rushed when I would have preferred the ideas to walk around a bit. And sometimes Mars' voice comes in so quickly that he actually sounds like he's interrupting. The Memory Palace, I think, is doing well in the short-form podcast, and I think 99% could learn from how they run their show.
- The music and the editing choices feel like poor man's Radio Lab, sorry to say. The beeping and the squelches and loops are nice I guess, but something's wrong with the levels, and sometimes the music and editing become the focus itself instead of lending coherence to the ideas being presented.
Can't wait to hear what they can produce in the future. I certainly hope this podcast is going places.

Pleasantly surprised!!

That TAL + Radio Lab thing I love, in bite-sized chunks. All from one of the most interesting people I've ever met.

Lovingly constructed audio pieces about the places and things in our world that we usually sleepwalk past without really seeing them. A compelling listen.

Great stuff!

I found this podcast to be very educational. Who knew there was a difference between noise and sound. Now, anyone who listens to 99% invisible will know. Thanks Roman Mars for the info.
