ALLISON MCKENZIE'S TERRA PRINT: FFVI - Terra and Mog Print
It's a bonus BONUS! Ever since the Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set dropped, our Discord's hottest channel has been #ttrpgs-and-card-games. Aidan and Ty decided that if it's all they could talk about, and all our most engaged listeners could talk about, then heck why not interview Magic: The Gathering design lead Gavin Verhey, who was the design lead for the FF set as well?
Then Aidan dropped a bomb on us: A contemporary review of Final Fantasy VII in Wizards of the Coast's classic Magic mag, The Duelist!
We not only had an amazing interview with Gavin, we had a great discussion afterwards reacting to everything he said, and discussing all the fun we've been having playing Magic--and in a sense all our favorite Final Fantasy games--at the same time.

Turn Based Sports

FunFactor is my return to the love of the written word, my sanctuary away from repeated YouTube video reviews with a wide mouthed face aligned to the right or left of the thumbnail. The review of reviews and the magazine give insight into the time and art of writing for games. Introspective from the hosts connect the then to the now, placing history into modern context.
RE: Turned Based Sports
With the addition of the pitch timer, baseball has also gained an ATB. Just like in video games, it changes the nature of strategy of the game. I don’t like the new patch to the game IMO.
RE: Relationship status
Happily together 19 years, married 12. Three cats, no kids, surrounded by video games and dorky things in abundance. Our shared culture binds us, and ensures we will always have things to do together. 100% recommend marrying your Player 2.

A love-letter to games media of yesteryear

What a fantastic concept, brilliantly executed by Ty and Aidan! Whether the game catches your attention, or the magazine being spotlighted, it’s a delightful trip in the wayback machine for the X-ennial crowd and older Gen Z, as well as providing some fascinating insight on the evolution of games media for younger audiences. Makes a great accompaniment on my commute into work, and I highly recommend it to any folks looking for more gaming-themed podcasts to add to their rotation!

A trip down memory lane

If you're someone who misses the old videogame mags you grew up with and want a healthy dose of nostalgia, this is such a good podcast. They covered one of my favorites on their first episode, PSM. This is excellent dudes. Can't wait for more!

Compelling exploration

Growing up with gaming magazines I spent hours per week scouring them for new games to play or opinions to claim as my own. They honestly taught me to read and gave me a broader understanding of what cultural spaces gaming took up as I was entering young adulthood. Fun factor is a great concept for revisiting these magazines that I really miss as time goes on. I look forward to further exploring how the print media days of gaming set the pace for discussing video games then and now. I appreciate the host’s wealth of experience and their casual free flowing conversations.

Fun and insightful

A fun podcast that relives game from the only era I actually played video games. Both Ty and Aidan know their stuff and make it hugely entertaining. (Sorry guys I don’t pick favorites). Looking forward to more episodes!!

I love it

FunFactor is a delight! Ty and Aidan capture the spirit, the feverish enthusiasm of getting a game magazine in the mail and reading it cover to cover, and then contextualizing it against the way we think and talk about games in the present day. They're critical but not contemptuous, and their bonafides in the modern games writing space lend authority and articulation to their observations. Most importantly, it sounds like they're genuinely having fun during the entire episode. It's an infectious, positive energy—and it lives up to the name of the show. I don't read game magazines cover to cover anymore, but I will absolutely listen from the beginning to the end of each episode of FunFactor.

5 Star Show

As a fan of these magazines and this era long before we referred to them as “retro,” I love a good excuse to look back and relive this time any chance I can get.
Aidan (my favorite host) and Ty (completely competent at his job) found a formula to talk about these magazines with their own personal touch. Bringing their professional and personal experience to reflect on the construction, history, and delivery through anecdotes and analysis is a great time and very entertaining to listen to.
I’m looking forward to many more episodes, and hope they can continue to do what they did in this premiere episode. This is highly recommended for any retro gaming fan, and any gaming fan with a sense of nostalgia for the 80s, 90s, and beyond.

[excited face red background]

So many theme podcasts save the “big one” for years down the road; food casts waiting on McDonalds, movie casts holding tentpoles hostage, etc. By all counts FunFactor could have opened their pilot episode with Computer Game Players’ review of Ironsword or Dragon Warrior 2. But no!
These two hit the ground running with PSM and FFVII right out the gate, with all the fun recollecting of the era that you’d expect.
Excited to see where they go next!
PS. Who is my favorite host and why is it Aidan?

Nostalgia and Fun

Great first episode. Really liked the chemistry of the hosts and what they brought to the table. I owned the magazine discussed in the episode, so listening was a very pleasant and funny walk down memory lane. Will be back for more in the future!
