Description

Our card this season is Darlene Hulse, the 4 of Hearts from Indiana.
Darlene Hulse was forcibly taken from her home in Argos, Indiana on August 17, 1984. Her two oldest daughters witnessed the attack but they didn’t recognize the man who took their mother. Though Darlene’s body would be found a day later, just six miles from her home, her killer has evaded law enforcement for almost four decades and the investigation has remained cold…until now.

So many jaw dropping leads found by your investigative work! I could not stop until the very last episode! Hoping one (or more) of the people named at the end of the series reaches out.. but first and foremost… what every case I’ve learned about through podcasts like this has in common- TEST THE EVIDENCE!
I cannot imagine what families who share this awful communality go through knowing that their answer could be literally one test away from solving their loved ones murder-knowing there are tests available and it’s lack of personnel or financing,(or both) from solving the case! I cannot fathom what that would feel like!

I haven’t listened to a podcast narrated by Ashley Flowers for a long time. But I heard this one was worth a listen so I did indeed listen and was immediately reminded why I had stopped listening in the first place. Good heavens, this drags on forever telling stories of suspects that were eliminated (so why even drag their names into it again?) and the grammar is horrendous (it’s not ‘her and me’ Ashley!) Anyway, this story is sad and should have been solved long ago. I hope the podcast gets things moving, Darlene and her family deserve justice.

Excited for your other seasons!!

This isn’t my first podcast, but this is certainly the first one I’ve been interested in! This shows just how intriguing a story can be even when the case still remains cold. I am very excited to hear more seasons of this awesome podcast! Keep up the good work! ❤️

I find Prosecutor Nelson extremely suspicious. Why is he the “gatekeeper” of information? He is clearly incompetent.
The clincher for me after his numerous failures was when he stated “maybe your here too early.” Forty years after the murder!

It was decent but I kept waiting for more story or more development. Just got a lot of cliffhangers and no real answers. Don’t understand why even make a season when nothing gets answered.

Stumbled across this podcast on a cross country road trip with my dad. We were captivated by the story telling and appalled at the feet dragging by a lame duck prosecutor who is all but checked out. We’re new to podcasting and this might have started a new hobby. Hopefully the Indiana State Police or the FBI get jurisdiction.

I was happy to see a series from the Deck and not just short episodes of unsolved cases. I did enjoy listening to most of it but I felt like we were introduced to a new suspect every episode. And it was hard to follow. I felt like Emily and Ashley were a bit unprofessional sounding in their questioning of the police and suspects. It was hard to listen to. I’ve listened to Delia D’ambra (CounterClock Podcast) and she is much more professional sounding than Emily. Delia is able to be both tough in her questioning without losing the respect of the person she’s talking to. So it was fine but if you’re looking for a well done, thorough, easy to follow crime podcast, listen to Counterclock.

Enjoying the podcast but

I’m frustrated that the episodes won’t auto play on the correct order and because they were all released on the same day you can’t fix that within the settings. Since the episodes are so short it has turned into constantly having to stop what I’m doing to select the correct episode. I want something I can listen to while I’m working without having an interruption every 15-20 minutes.

WAS NOT a true crime junky in the least but came across "The Deck" by accident on road trip after it was referenced on a political or daily news pod I regularly listened too. I became addicted in October 22. I've listened to all & loved The Deck Investigates too. I'm ready for more & need them more frequently for my hour(s) long work commute.
Still bothered by disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit while I lived nearby.. please cover?
I do internet searches every year or two to see if resolved, I'd love to see this covered.

I really appreciated the heartfelt and respectful emotion shared in the final episode that highlighted the sound bites of Darlene’s daughters with their families during recording, and the home video/sound clips from when they were young with her. True crime can sometimes leave out the basic humanity of these tragedies and Ashley and Emily did a great job of putting a spotlight on that. This part of the episode and series brought tears to my eyes. I sure hope these 3 women can one day get justice for their sweet Mama.

Interesting case, and I loved the short episodes. Shame what happened to the family hopefully someday they can get the correct info. The negative is that the host comes off as a busy body who doesn’t grasp basic investigation tactics. Makes speculation and assumptions without evidence and seems flabbergasted that people can’t remember something from 40 years ago without information in front of them, hides behind “seeking justice for a family” facade to take a faux moral high ground.

It’s pretty good, I love Ashley and the deck.. this one just got a little too out of hand though. It felt like it was just stretching things out and totally reaching on certain people. It was sort of all over the place but I still liked the story just bc true crime intrigued me. Feel like it was a money grab. Can’t believe she did this live in person.. I would’ve been so mad if I bought tickets to this.

Admirable, but…

It’s really admirable what this podcast and people are trying to do for the family, but…I just couldn’t get past where they interviewed one of the potential suspects. It was obvious he did not want to be interviewed and even sounded like he wasn’t told he was being recorded until he actually asked them a few minutes in. Just seemed unethical to go right up to someone’s house then blast the entire interview to this network…Really bothered me enough I just couldn’t finish after that. Also, think it could have been fewer episodes. Hope they find justice; the family did great advocating and glad they found a wide platform.

Waste of time.

Too many short little episodes with lots of theatrics and dramatic “cliffhangers” that led to absolutely nothing. Should’ve been a 1 hour crime junkie episode.

Frustrating! It’s nearly impossible to follow the countless suspects, theories, dead-ends, possible additional victims, left turns and pointless meanderings in this podcast.
What Ms. Flowers should do is complete all of the research, all of the work, reach an ending, then develop a coherent synopsis and theory in podcast form. Make it easier for the listener to follow, and more focused on the story she wants to tell. You could cut the podcast series in half (at least) by following basic storytelling principles.
Much like her “crime junkie” series, the listener is brought along on a story, and given absolutely no payoff in the end. All you get are theories, speculation, and outrage. I can live with that in a 45 minute stand alone episode, but not in a 15 part series.
I can only hope that this woman’s family gets a legitimate investigation into her death. It sounds solvable, but time is working against them.

I have so many emotions listening to this. It has brought back so many memories. Not just about what happen to Darlene, but remembering how special her girls are. They were all so beautiful children and didn’t deserve this tragedy.
Being a parent know I don’t know how Ron carried on after this, it’s a testament to his faith, and his families faith.
There are so many people in this community that haven’t forgotten about this and that it’s never been solved.
I took piano lessons from Darlene for a short time and she was a very wonderful person.
I really hope this isn’t the end and that we finally bring justice and peace to the girls and Ron.

My heart breaks for the daughters of this woman. However, it’s typical Ashley Flower dramatics, speculation, and little to no substance. I keep hoping she will grow. But it’s not looking promising.

Way over dramatized. I cannot believe this was done live like a concert . Like always limited investigation techniques . And then in episode 12 she straight up impersonates James baysinger. Who this whole thing is supposed to be mimicking. But why not actually investigate then because that’s what makes what James does magic. Do your own thing this is so cringe.

Oh my gosh. Ashley is not a professional detective/investigator! The police do not owe you anything, they do not have to answer any of your questions, and I wouldn’t either with the record you have, this podcast included, for just bashing police! You took on a case to help “solve it” and it brought no justice for the family, just your own financial gain. There was no need for this to be 15 episodes. You could have told the story to bring it some extra attention and then let the real investigators continue their real job.

Unnecessarily long. Didn’t resolve much of anything even though they created this impression early on. Also didn’t like the approach with interviewing prior criminal suspects. It was so much speculation without evidence that didn’t rationalize how much they smeared these individuals only to conclude…”just to much coincidences”. It almost started to sound conspiratorial.

Why are they splitting up a 30 minute story into 15 episodes? And then saying we need to do a second season on this case? So they can do minutes of ads and commercials to drive up revenue? So they can waste my time listening to ads. Each episode has ads and commercials, then a recap of information that you already heard, then more pointless speculation towards different people involved. Worst crime podcast ever.

Mediocre journalism, but interesting story.

Pro: The passion of the staff to tell the story and renew public interest.
Pro: Very interesting case.
Con: Disingenuous layout, such as the episode that was clearly intended to make listeners suspect Kenneth, before concluding with something along the lines of, “Now, we do not want you to jump to the conclusion that he did it…”. Ummmm… that is exactly the effect you wrote the episode to have.
Con: Waaaaaayyyy too many commercials for a 22 minute episode. Normally, out of respect for the podcaster’s revenue/funding stream, I listen to commercials. After the the first couple of episodes, I just skipped them.
Con: Sensationalist vibe, complete with cliff hangers, rather than a well-reasoned presentation of the case and what they learned.
Compared to Mandy Matney’s reporting on the Murdaugh Murders, this is a poor cousin. Consider that Mandy and Liz’s reporting is so solid that Alex Murdaugh’s defense team was unable to block or legally reprimand them for anything they reported, because their research and sourcing were so immaculate. If not for Mandy, Alex would never have been charged, much less convicted, of murdering his wife and son.

Show some respect 🙄

I respect Ashleys hustle and I’m an AC fan in general, but but the amount of ads for such short episodes is literally so rude like be for real girl. It’s way too much of a money grab. I also don’t love the sound effects and dramatic music. You’re a good enough storyteller without all that histrionic nonsense.

As they start to reveal several suspects, pay attention! There are so many situations and possible suspects. Two share the same first name. It can get confusing if you’re multitasking. Otherwise, amazing podcast.
