Today in Pawnee Rob and Alan are headed to a friend's home. In "Leslie's House" Leslie abuses her power when she brings in community center teachers to help throw a dinner party to impress Justin. In today's episode your hosts discuss the writer's choice to make Leslie a hoarder, a joke that sparked the creation of Tigertail, and how architecture can affect an audience. Got a question for the Pawnee Town Hall? A remorseful Leslie tells a group of Recreation Center teachers the Pawnee budget has been cut by $1,000, and five of their classes will have to be cut, but exactly which classes has not yet been determined. Later after an excellent date in Indianapolis, Leslie and Justin decide their next date will be in Pawnee. Feeling pressure to make their date equally exciting in Pawnee, Leslie decides to host a dinner party at her home with all her “interesting friends” from the Parks Dept.
Ann comes to Leslie's house, and finds a hoarder’s paradise. When they find themselves unable to clean it, Leslie calls Maria Portlesman, who teaches cleaning courses at the recreation center. She declines payment and hints she would prefer preferential treatment when Leslie cuts the classes, despite Leslie's assurance this will not happen. When Leslie realizes she has not prepared any food for the party, she calls a culinary teacher from the recreation center. Later, at the party, Andy complains about Justin to April, who makes Andy happy when she proposes putting chewed up gum in Justin's pockets. Eventually, Tom's ex-wife Wendy arrives. Tom expresses anger that Leslie invited her, especially because Ron is romantically interested in her. When Ron impresses Wendy by eating a hot red pepper, Tom attempts to eat a bigger one, but has to run to the bathroom in pain. When Justin starts yawning, a worried Leslie calls in other recreation center teachers to make the party more interesting, including a belly-dancer, a fencer, a caricaturist and an origami teacher.
Eventually, an accounting teacher arrives, believing demonstrations are being held to determine which class will be cut, much to the anger of Ron. The teacher gives a very boring accounting lecture, which puts Justin to sleep. The next day, Leslie is before the Pawnee Disciplinary Committee on charges of abuse of power. Leslie calls Justin as a witness and questions him as to whether he enjoyed the party, to which he answers an emphatic yes. Afterward, the committee rules no further action will be taken, mainly because Leslie turned herself in and paid $1,000 restitution to the recreation center so no classes would be cut. When Ann asks why she did it, Leslie said it was to get an honest answer from Justin about the date, under penalty of perjury. The episode ends with Justin encouraging Tom to ask Wendy out.

Stop rattling off the synopsis in one breath exposing the whole Rosie’s and spend only 30 min not talking about the episode. Just guessing who came up with a joke? FOR THE LOVE OF THE SHOW AND FANS, do a breakdown of the episodes! Give us behind the scenes not guessing which writer pitched a joke. The show is beloved and this is not correct podcast from true fans at all.

I was so excited when I stumbled across this pod, being a huge office ladies and Brian Baumgardner’s Office pod, but this is just beyond cringy..
Alan Yang is super annoying, goes off topic and is CONSTANTLY apologizing or making comments about how “inappropriate” things are in episodes. It was years ago…. Quit being so sensitive.
I keep trying, but i can barely finish an episode anymore.
Of course Rob Lowe is hilarious.

Thank you Thank you

I am enjoying this podcast, haven’t missed an episode. However I do wish they’d take a page from Office Ladies and The Good Place and spend more time on the actual episode - less on their other projects. Break down the eps, fill us in about guest actors, background info etc.

Aha laughed so hard hearing Rob Lowe reflect on the rarity of Craftsman houses. Come to Eugene, Oregon, Rob! We’ve got craftsman houses all over the place. Our house is a Craftsman and you are right, it’s beautiful and inexpensive. Thankfully we have avoided the hoarding affliction, though who knows where the future will take us.

I am very sad about this podcast. Parks and rec is one of my favorite shows to this day and it breaks my heart that this podcast hasn’t done it justice. The podcast barely covers the lives of the female characters (the main characters!!!) and talks almost exclusively about Andy, Tom, and Ron in that order. They have only had one female guest and that episode didn’t center anymore around the female characters. I’m quitting this podcast.

If you came here to: -learn the insights of filming your favorite show -get an episode by episode, scene by scene break down -learn about the extras and the guest stars on the show -learn about deleted scenes or why a particular scene was shot in the matter that it was -have your show related questions answered …..LOOK ELSEWHERE!
If you came to: -hear the exact same dialogue held between two narcissists each week -listen to boring stories no one can relate to -learn about Master of None -hear Rob Lowe bash every single episode of Parks & Rec that he’s not in - listen to two hosts who came to “work” without doing a shred of research or any sort preparation THIS IS THE EXACT PLACE FOR YOU I wish Amy and Rashida would do an actual P & R rewatch podcast, it’s impossible for them to do any worse than these two.

Rob Lowe has his own podcast, right? Can’t that be the home of West Wing stories and other non-Parks related anecdotes? Office Ladies set the bar and seems to have originated somewhat organically, whereas this podcast is just a really lazy version of that.

This is okay at best. It is very surface level, and while it’s fun to listen to it really doesn’t give much new behind-the-scenes info.
My biggest gripe- Let the show be what it is! You don’t need to comment on every “women challenge,” every joke that “you couldn’t say that now,” “remember this was made 12 years ago,” every “social justice” issue that just happens to tie in to the show. The beauty of the show is that it’s “cringe comedy” and written to feel real. Real people say things that aren’t 100% politically correct. It’s tiring when every episode has these comments. If you don’t stand by the show and what it is now, don’t make the podcast.

One big issue

To begin, I’ve listened to every episode of this podcast. That being said, I’ve come to realization after many days of rumination on why this show, compared to others like Office Ladies, is inferior in quality. The big issue is that the hosts alienate the audience with their “Hollywood” exclusive insight making it feel like they are talking down to the audience. The Office Ladies relate with the audience by sharing experiences that are more personal and almost degrading on their end, making the audience able to be in their shoes. Here, it feels like boasting from both hosts.

This is *literally* THE best podcast EVER.

The hosts are wonderful, their team is great, and it’s always a hilarious episode when a guest joins. You get an in-depth look at the writers room and the process of acting in the show. I’d just finished rewatching my favorite show ever for the umpteenth time when I happened across this divine gem of a podcast, and now I listen to it daily on my delivery route. I just adore the deep dives into the minds of the writers, producers, and actors, and learning about the early drafts of story lines vs how they evolved and little secrets like the $10k Jurassic Fork-Jerry Egg. [I think I speak on the behalf of the entire fan community that we NEED that deleted scene on YouTube.] Much love and gratitude.

Parks and Rec is one of my top 3 shows of all time. I love the conversations and behind the scenes stories the guys share. The first few episodes are a little rough because they talk more about filming and show business as a whole than this actual show. Like many, I came here to find a behind-the-scenes look at P&R similar to Office Ladies. So far, there’s been very little diversity, very little talk of the actual episodes & a whole lot of talk about Pratt (please tone it down!) It sounds like this is just an easy way for them to chat with friends about TV production & bring in the industry, rather than in-depth looks at each episode - they don’t talk about stunts, favorite lines, fan questions (except one per episode), locations filmed, etc. I love P&R so I am sad to be underwhelmed by this poorly researched podcast. Also, please add some women’s voices!

I agree with many reviewers that compare this to Office Ladies. I want to love this one too but these guys were just not in theses scenes as much and don’t follow the episode content. They talk about everything else than the content. Maybe it will be better once Chris Traeger comes on, but they jump all over and they miss that there are deleted scenes and other relevant things. I want to hear behind the scenes stories from shooting the show and if they could get other actors on the show, it would really help.

I’ve never left a podcast review for anything and wanted to check others reviews to see if I was along in my feelings. I see that I’m not alone. I wish this were a more in depth rewatch podcast but half of the time I feel like I’m in a TV Production 101 class as they go off on tangents about generally filming and writing shows and movies. I’m hoping it gets better when they get to the episodes that Rob is actually in but I do enjoy getting to hear his perspective as a fan watching the early episodes for the first time. Parks is my favorite show so I was hoping for more. Producer Greg has more interesting things to add than the hosts themselves.

The Good Place podcast was so well done! They went into so much more detail. It’s a bit annoying that the fans know this show better than the writer/producer. They get many details wrong. I was so excited when this came out…. It could use the Mark Evan Jackson touch…. It kind of feels like a rushed cash grab… not a lot of planning going into each episode

It’s pretty interesting when they actually talk about the show, but it’s mostly generic film industry talk and Alan self-righteously apologizing for every little bit of insensitive comedy. And calling Knope racist because she accidentally mixed up Tom’s ethnicity? Insensitive, maybe, but throwing around a strong word like “racist” in a situation like that is just damaging instead of helpful. But he’s just another Hollywood elitist trying to show how righteous he is. Anyways, it’s not as good as Office Ladies. I do enjoy the rare moments when they discuss behind the scenes happenings and talking about Chris Pratt before becoming a superstar, but other than that, it’s kind of a weak podcast.

Why is Rob Lowe a host on this podcast? He wasn’t on the show at the beginning and left before the end, I don’t feel like he should be hosting a podcast of breaking down a show for episodes he wasn’t even there for. Parks and Rec is possibly the most uplifting, greatest most innovative and original show in modern history. And tame..but not at all in a bad way. The fact that Alan Yang after LITERALLY every joke is apologizing and saying “we couldn’t do this now”, “what were we thinking” “this shows how far we’ve come” is disgusting. 1. Grow a pair. 2. Stop pandering. 3. The jokes he singles out he admits are the best and what makes the show itself. Therefore making the truly sad commentary that because of this perceived “progress”, which in many cases is self-destructive as it boxes so many groups of people in as being off limits to make a casual joke about- thus creating a world where everyone’s focused on the differences between us rather than the similarities…which would be REAL progress by the way- makes it evident that comedy will never be the same. That as mundane a show as The Office or Parks could possibly ever be perceived as “offensive “ especially to the point that this wimp Yang is constantly cowering and apologizing, is a sad state of affairs. Even shows like Always Sunny, that are meant to be about a group of terrible and ignorant people, have become overly sensitive, tame and therefore less funny. South Park as always holding out as the greatest commentary on our ridiculous world and refusing to be boxed in…even going so far as to point out how ridiculously overly sensitive the world is by bashing the people responsible for making it this way. This could’ve been amazing, but I found myself yelling at it every few mins when Yang took time outs on probably 95% of the material to repeat the same pathetic apologetic nonsense over and over in every single episode. Another amazing piece of art ruined by the very creators of it. I feel like if he hadn’t gone outta his was to address the tiny little “offensive” jokes that no one besides the most hardcore of PC principals would be upset at, no one in their right mind would’ve even noticed.
Rob Lowe is the man. Haven’t listened to “Literally” yet but I’m praying it’s nothing like this.

Get off your political high horse and just talk about the show. It’s a good funny show. We don’t care about your political views. This is not the platform for that. We want to hear funny behind the scene stories. Rob Lowe you are perfect, don’t ever change.

Although there is a certain amount of the behind the scenes element that is interesting, I loose interest. I’m still figuring out why, as P & R is a very favorite of mine. The hosts can drift off focus of the episodes. Chris Pratt seems to come up A LOT. Perhaps too much time has passed between jobs for the show to hold as much meaning to those involved in the show. I suppose shows do tend to hold a sustained meaning to fans more so than participants. I don’t know, maybe they needed a female host as well. The show had a lot of strong female characters that created almost a matriarchal feel at times. Perhaps three male hosts can’t elicit the energy of a show that seemed to strive for more of a balance.

This podcast has been an absolute delight. The chemistry between the hosts is great. A good recap podcast always has at least one cast member and at least one person who is a big fan of the show. This show has both. It’s been good to go back to Pawnee. I work for a small city and Pawnee feels very real in a lot of ways. I went into public service because of Parks and Rec and Leslie Knope.
Couple questions:
1. What is the population of Pawnee? They’ve got a lot of services and amenities like the zoo, employee cafeteria at city hall, park rangers, etc. Do they actually have the tax base to support that?
2. When Mark took the buyout at the end of season 2, did Pawnee just stop having a planning department? Did they start contracting all of their planning needs out? I’m very curious as a city planner about what they did after the budget cuts.

We get it….

I like the breakdown of the episode, and Rob is always a great storyteller. However, we get it! This show had a lot of content that’s not up to par with the current climate of politically correct comedy. Alan always commenting that some scenes or jokes wouldn’t be filmed today and that we’ve all ‘learned’ is annoying. Example, the strip club and how they weren’t ‘sex work positive’ at the time is honestly just kind of stupid. We get it. Just break down the episode and appreciate the comedy for what it was. At this point, Alan is just pandering to the small group of people who can’t appreciate comedy at that time. If it wasn’t for Rob, I wouldn’t keep listening.

I want so bad to like this podcast. Parks and Rec is one of my favorite shows and I had high hopes for this podcast because of my love for Office Ladies and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. A podcast about an awesome Greg Daniels show from Team Coco? Sounds like a dream.
However, it’s just not very good. As others have lamented, it’s obvious they are doing hardly any prep work for these episodes. There are very few behind the scenes tidbits, hardly any conversation with listeners, and honestly not a lot of passion overall. Neither of the hosts seems to care much about Parks and Rec. It’s like they saw a cash grab with this podcast and are just phoning it in. The episodes are short, filled with ads, and don’t really offer any new information that can’t be found on Wikipedia or IMDB.
They need an additional host or two. Take a page out of Conan’s book and add your producer as a host. He has great tidbits of information, but they are so awkwardly placed and obviously added during post, so he’s basically talking into a vacuum instead of having a discussion with the hosts. It would also be nice to have more female perspective in the podcast, since so much of the TV show revolves around Leslie and many of her plot lines are specifically dealing with female experiences.
They also need to reach out to crew or cast members before each episode and get more intel! Come into an episode with extra facts and fun behind the scenes stories. Read listeners questions and use them as a guide for talking points about the episode. Office Ladies is so superb at this and I wish this Parks and Rec podcast would do the same due diligence in their episodes.

Great vibes
