The Problem With War: Garbage Fire (Literally!)

Time: 46:35
Jon figured out how to podcast! In our first episode, he's joined by two staff members who happen to be veterans to discuss their experiences. Then, he sits down with Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) to talk about what’s being done in Congress to help vets suffering from toxic exposure.

Thank you Jon Stewart for being a hero to our veterans.
Shame on our government for luring service people in and then poisoning and abandoning them.
The right and the left all agree our veterans deserve better And no more wars for oil.

The ability to curse is one freely given to everyone. It’s an ability overused on his podcast. If a young person (below the age of 18) wanted to hear clear, concise, intelligent commentary with a sense of humor this “would” be a good choice. The overuse of profanity from those who feel it’s their purpose in life to remind us of profanity in lieu intelligence derails the show. I like Stewart but not the language.

I hope this gets better

I love Jon Stewart. We his entire run on the daily show was a staple of our TV viewing for years. I don’t get what he’s doing with this show. It’s not funny and he’s not journalist so what is this supposed to be? There are plenty of places on TV to see humorless one-sided slants on issues. I miss the satire and wit. I hope he figures this show out.

We missed you!!!!

Jon (John) for the rest of America. Just listened to your appearance on smartless. Kinda laughed at how you mocked that you didn’t know how to access your own material but thankfully apple put it right in my face. First episode was awesome. My best friend is a vet that struggles with the VA and this just hit home. The moderate/middle/everyday idiots miss your presence in social media and our ‘daily’ lives. Please keep bringing your thoughts and truth!

My heart is over pouring with happiness to see Jon back on tv. I subscribed to Apple TV simply because of this show. As a millennial, it is so refreshing to get unbiased news. Simply facts followed up with passion and heart that only Jon Stewart can do justice. He doesn’t have a political agenda and that is exactly what America needs right now.

I thought he’d lighten up with his self righteousness on the podcast but… good grief… veterans suffering on the FIRST broadcast?? Come on. Yes it’s important but we swim in bad news 24/7. Give us some relief mr comedian.

Please Continue To speak about VA issues. Also they have been doing burn pits forever since forever. It’s how the military deals with garbage my husband deals with back in the 1970’s. Also Black service men have a even more difficult time getting rated in for benefits. Check it out. Thank you so much so glad your back.

The final interview of your 1st Ep is the reason we need your voice in the conversation. I so wanted your commentary on that interaction, but sometimes it's best to let the playback speak for itself. The cognitive dissonance is astounding! And it's disheartening to know that your life / fate (in this country) is literally in the hands of the willfully ignorant.
We've missed you!!!

Hi Jon I am driving from Montana back to my old home in California and listen to your first podcast. Our son is a captain in the Marines your show was very informative. It was also very good to hear senator tester speak as he is one of our state senators. You’re doing a great job keep up the good work this is probably my only my third or fourth podcast I’ve ever listen to as a 67 year old
as a footnote I still introduce myself as a Jersey boy from Fanwood New Jersey even though I’ve lived in California for over 40 years before we just moved to Montana

Couldn’t be happier to see Jon Stewart doing what he does best, gets to the heart of an issue and points out in his self deprecating way how simple it ought to be. Have a question about the veterans and burn pits and health care. Why do we need all this causation? Why aren’t veterans just given the best health care for ANY malady that may befall them, regardless of how it came about? If you are a veteran, you should have government health care period. Are we going to let a veteran die of a curable/treatable disease or condition just because a war didn’t cause it? Why would we do that? Of course it seems especially agregious when the time in service did cause it, but if veterans did have proper health care plans, it wouldn’t even be a question.

Great Show

Great Show. Welcome back. Problem though, is the lead was about how we love, support, thank them for their service etc. I would think if that were the case, we wouldn’t be spending so much time, energy and probably money trying to figure out who and what is covered. Maybe we should just walk the walk and say, if you were involved in combat, all your medical care should be covered for life. Does not have to be a VA system and all the millions of dollars spent in red tape. Just give them all Medicare style care. Should be for the whole country, but maybe start small. When it works, and saves money and lives, the data can be used to support medicare for all.

We love you Jon 💛

I love JS and as an audiophile, I gotta say the music and mix of this podcast are unmatched. You hear everything perfectly, the talking is saturated and present, and Gary Clark brings mad grease to the theme and transition cues!!! This is how it’s done.

Most insightful comprehensive podcast about dilemma facing US veterans who volunteered to serve our country. The more citizens understand magnitude of the woeful situation facing veterans health care, the more likely we as as a population will support care needed.
None of us questions amount of money spent by contractors & provocateurs, but we treat veterans as though they are scamming us, denying vast majority of vets vital health care imperative to their health.

The most important missing thing that your show needs to do is list names and contact info phones or emails the listening public can pressure to do something. You wind us up on the subject but don’t tell us where to go. John Oliver made the same mistake. Use your public as your battering ram. Tell us where to go with your info and we’ll go there

This show is illuminating in an uncomfortable way and we need it. I wish this show every success but I’m not sure most of the the American public will tolerate the mirror that this show raises to our current status quo while also showing the complicity every one of us shares for letting this go unaddressed.

Thanks much Jon, for picking a Veterans issue as your first PC. I’m a veteran of over 30 years of active military service and have learned so many important things about our veterans from you and your teammates. Our first National Security priority has to stay in focus… and that will always be our People. Taking care of people should not be so complex or difficult… when it’s truly part of our culture, we will have won. Thankfully we have a voice. Thank you so much

Enjoyed your 1st episode as I knew I would. Have missed you terribly. You might feel it’s too risky, but it would mean a lot if you could mention, even just briefly, the work Tracey McShane does with your farm and advocacy obo animals. Maybe a little something about transitioning to a vegan lifestyle? Coming from you, reaching so many, it could have a great impact. Thank you.

John, I enjoyed the POD and discussion with your team. My wife and I are both retired Army and both spent time in the Middle East. She spent 36 months in Iraq. She has issue related to living near a burn pit for 18 Months. FYI in Aug of this year the VA recognized and established presumption for Asthma, rhinitis and sinusitis. While not good enough every journey start with a first step. Your effort have made a difference and will continue to make a difference in the lives of all veterans.

Hope.

I do not have personal experience with deploying to Iraq, yet I was in the military during Desert Storm. I remember a female soldier who was in my unit who came back from Iraq with symptoms due to being exposed to burning oil. She was told that her symptoms were all in her head. I left the Army. I saw her seven years later. She was a shell of her former self.
