Description

For nearly 100 years, one family traded influence and held power in the South Carolina lowcountry until a fatal boat crash involving an allegedly intoxicated heir-apparent shed sunlight on a true crime saga like no other.  Award-winning journalist Mandy Matney has been investigating the Murdaugh family since that fateful night in 2019.
The now-infamous Murdaugh family is at the center of a litany of criminal investigations into fraud, obstruction of justice, the 2021 double homicides of Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie, the 2015 murder of young Stephen Smith, the suicide-for-hire plot of family patriarch Alex Murdaugh (who has since been charged with Paul & Maggie’s murders) and a vast insurance scheme that preyed on the region's most vulnerable citizens.
Matney's podcast, ranked #1 globally in 2021, provides unmatched insight into the horrific deaths, botched investigations and newly-uncovered crimes that are all interconnected.  Every corner of the justice system seems to be connected to this vile web of deceit, murder and corruption.
Now featuring Co-host Liz Farrell, you’ll follow along in real time from South Carolina as their exclusive sources guide listeners on a journey to expose the truth wherever it leads.

Terrible vocal fry

2022-12-03
I was interested in listening to this podcast, however the narrator, Mandy, has some of the WORST vocal fry I’ve ever heard. I can barely make it through Episode 1. It’s unfortunate because her reporting sounds exceptionally good. However if you don’t have a voice for radio, please pass it onto someone else to tell the story. This series needs to be completely re-done with a new voice. UPDATE: I have powered through several episodes. Mandy has been informed of her vocal fry and is like well this is how I talk. Dude. It’s learned behavior. Unlearn it. It’s possible. This podcast could be great if you’d work on fixing the voice. And OMG! Not everything cops write gets “reported in a file.” There is something called “case notes.”

I love the detail Mandy brings to her investigation. She is excellent at reviewing and following the timeline.

Are you really interested in justice?

Mandy spends about 20% of the podcast focused on actual reporting, and the other 80% on self promotion/trashing other journalists/ads/etc. I haven’t even made it to Liz joining but I’m hearing that it gets even worse, so I’ll be stopping. I was so interested in this case, and I love seeing the oppressive big guy get his comeuppance as much as the next true crime fan, but this podcast is very clearly about Mandy developing a brand, not about justice. She expends a lot of energy trying to convince her listeners that she’s in it for the little guy, only to immediately pivot into a manufactured working class hero narrative, constant publicizing of her news platform, and a lot of complaining. I totally understand that there are lazy journalists ripping off the hard work of others, and if that was shared in the spirit of journalistic integrity, I’d be fine with that. But when those complaints take up 50% of the podcast run time, I don’t think it can read as anything other than a need for personal praise and credit. Also, Mandy really enjoys excusing her poor production with “I’m a journalist first, podcaster second.” But if you want people to enjoy your podcast, you do actually need to do the work to create something that folks enjoy listening to.
Overall, it’s a real shame, because this is an excellent story worth telling. I just wish someone else was telling it.

I normally would not be attracted to this type of podcast but I’ve been hooked from the first episode. Her reporting her ability to investigate the facts and courage comes through her telling of events. I think it takes a lot of courage to have covered a story like this for all involved. She has all the girl power for this!!

The heart of the matter…

Followed this since it started just because I had an Army friend who lived on Hilton Head and got the Island Packet where both reporters worked initially. You could find other sources but these reporters and Bland have been directly involved with the investigation of the cases at issue here for years. On the ground in SC. Other pods are news source aggregators and the MSM is infected with the the PR operations of Mudaughs defense lawyers and there DNC political connections.
There is a crusading aspect to this content. They view the SC legal system as compromised by inside baseball favoritism like legislative selection of judge, special treatment for practicing attorneys who are also legislators and failure of judicial oversite. Who could blame them? The out right judicially enabled fleecing of so many vulnerable clients is proof enough. And it seems appalling on the surface. Compared to Wisconsin where I live or even Georgia where I worked, the system looks like a recipe for corruption.

This used to be a good podcast. But it has become a rambling, poorly organized, biased, whiny, too full of unwanted personal details and grievances by hosts, presented in a cadence that cannot hold the listener’s interest, and just simply not worth an hour of my time. Too bad.

12.3.22: it makes me sad to look back at my first review. I used to love this podcast. What a shame that it’s turned into “airing of Mandy’s personal grievances” rather than investigating and reporting the facts of the case. I know the hosts will not want to hear this, which is also a shame. But repeating ad nauseam every episode about how you were wronged back in the day but it all has turned out that you were right all along is tiresome. I understand addressing it once in a great while, but every episode has way too many minutes dedicated to Mandy griping about not being taken seriously enough, complaining about other reporters reporting “her” story, and other perceived slights. I unfollowed today and I was sorry to do it. I hope the hosts take this into consideration as there are so many others abandoning the MMP ship—but would gladly come back if humble, hardworking Mandy were to make a return.
Here’s my original review from right after the first few episodes aired, well over a year ago:
Thank you, Mandy, for your hard work on this most recent case, but also for your journalism surrounding this family for years. You are a journalist first, not a podcaster or YouTuber. Most people have no idea how much work goes into producing a single episode of a podcast and you are doing it in addition to your day-to-day, and giving a local insight due to your well-established connections as a journalist. Take the constructive feedback given, but ignore the people who criticize simply to criticize. You are doing a tremendous service not only for the community and others who want the truth, but for the families of the victims who deserve it.

Your voice is just fine!

I appreciate all your hard work and attention to detail. I also appreciate the fact that you are Able to give the time needed to really paint a vocal picture of all aspects of the case. I can visualize by your descriptions what’s going on from moment to moment. I hope that you are thinking about your next project after you depart from the Murdochs.

Power of the press

2022-12-02
Below is what I wrote over a year ago,
now just can’t listen anymore. Adding Eric to the mix helped offset what it has started to become. It has lacked professionalism and respect…an example is when Mandy called the federal judge only by his last name.Eric quickly corrected her, bravo, but it reflects her entire attitude now it seems..Liz clearly seems to understand the case and processes more but she too has now become more unprofessional in her comments.
Just remember this is why we need the press, what if it was your son who was being framed by this powerful family that had unlimited resources and contacts. If everyone played by the rules, then you would not need checks and balances, but we do need the press because of corrupted officials. Keep up your podcast please after this series is done.

The worst vocal fry I’ve ever heard

I say this without and exaggeration. She truly has the worst case of vocal fry I’ve ever heard in my life. It makes the podcast unlistenable. A voice coach is recommended or hiring someone else to read the story. You know the saying “you have a face for radio”? I have a new one after listening to this “you’ve got a voice for a library”…get it? Because libraries are typically places where it’s frowned upon to talk…anyhow. Maybe get your fianceeeeeeeeeay to read the copy idk.
Also she seems to spend a lot of time talking about how she’s this paragon of journalistic integrity but many of the things she says are extremely biased and borderline slanderous.
At the end of the day there are just things we are not. I’m not and never will be a runway model and you’re not and never will be an audio journalist unless you take action to improve.

For over 2 years now, I've listened to this Podcast on the very day that it's dropped- that's how outstanding the reporting is! It's got the whole package: context, humor, information, and a healthy dose of reality regarding a significant slice of The South Carolina Judicial System that was hijacked about 100 Years Ago by the powerful and influential Murdaugh Family and their law firm PMPED. Three reporters (Mandy, David and Liz) and one Lawyer (Eric Bland) have made it their mission to explain and untangle a web of lies, murder, deceit, and predatory behavior that had been quietly flourishing in the dark for a few privileged "Good 'Ol Boys,"
Better than that though; is these 4 Individuals are getting the wheels of Justice finally moving in the right direction for all South Carolinians. Its a truly outstanding and inspiring podcast!

Welcome back to your roots!

Stumbled upon this podcast, didn’t know anything about the Murdaughs. I was remodeling a house, and this engaging podcast was a perfect distraction while I was stripping paint off wood, painting walls, and putting in tile. I can’t wait for the final result, Alex Murdaugh goes to prison!

This case is so intriguing and I found this podcast as things were developing. I’m not trolling here…just stating fact…but the host’s over enunciating of each word in a sentence is very off putting. I agree with others that all the talk about the wedding and promotion also wore on me. Then the minutes long grandstanding about “bring things into the light” and trashing other journalists. It’s a lot. For the last couple months I’ve only tuned in for significant updates in the case.

I really liked the podcast and the story when it first started. Even with Mandy complaining at the beginning middle and end of every episode. Then they started to stretch out the episodes and stories when there was nothing to report on and finally now Mandy is insulting the way people speak? Even after all her complaints about people complaining about her voice? It’s childish and unprofessional…..unfollowing this show wish it was better

I’ve been loving this podcast for the criminal content but please in the future refrain from that weird work wife mutual stroking event that you staged on November 21, 21. That display was for the two of you not your listeners. I also don’t care about your fabulous life, where you go on vacations, your wedding or anything vapid about your private life. I’m not here for vapid lifestyle influencer content.

I’m very interested in this case however the host(s) cattiness and complete bias ruin it for me. I don’t live in SC so I just want to hear actual facts about the case. It’s become unlistenable. I’ve listened to this Podcast since the beginning and every week, less facts are relayed but more insults are hurled at everyone these hosts don’t like. Too bad it’s so bad now. Real journalists are supposed to be unbiased and just give the facts.

First, the amount of dedication this team puts towards fact checking and assembling these podcasts is astounding. Nice work. I enjoy listening every week to the new episodes. Very happy to have members so close to the investigation and trials to receive real time updates along with new clues / information to tie into the spiderweb of events.
Constructive criticism: The cup of justice bonus episodes are nice; but I do sometimes hear opinions or judgements coming off as unnecessary (i.e. joking about families mobile homes). Let’s keep it kind & professional.

My wife and I live in Gainesville Georgia, a nice little town in northeast Georgia. My wife is from Camden SC, we were married in Lexington SC, and honeymooned in Charleston SC. A lot of our very good friends live in the Columbia area, so we make frequent trips up there. I had heard of this case when it originally happened, but paid little attention to it…….until my wife came across your show. I started listening to it, and it became a binging addiction !! My wife and I have conversations about your show and the case itself, over dinner, before turning the lights out at night, in the car on the way to work. Mandy, you and Liz, and of course David and Luna 😄, and the Jackhammer of Justice Eric, have turned this into a must listen to event! We have turned our friends here in Georgia onto the show, and case. Im a true crime podcast fanatic, and y’all by far are the best in class. The sincerity and conviction you show towards the countless victims in this case comes through in your show. Another reason we are hooked, is the commitment to the truth, and not the sensationalism of the main stream media. The fact checking and verification that you do is so refreshing. Please keep up the excellent work, and know that for every person who criticizes you, there are 20 who admire the work you do. What your show does, that separates itself from all others, is your ability to make us feel like we have known you for years. That personal touch makes it that much better. So, I will stop rambling, but thank you ! Y’all’s work is amazing!

The content might be good, but her voice was over the top valley girl, I couldn’t continue. She’s also, close to the microphone…far from the microphone….close to the microphone.
It’s exhausting listening to her brag about how she’s the most amazing journalist in the world. She talks endlessly about how all the other journalists are not “true journalists “ and she’s the only one who actually investigates. Then she goes on to say how tired she is and how her mental health is being affected. I want to know about the story and not being made to feel guilty about not being as perfect as her.
