Description

If you could call a number and say you’re sorry, and no one would know…what would you apologize for? For fifteen years, you could call a number in Manhattan and do just that. This is the story of the line, and the man at the other end who became consumed by his own creation. He was known as “Mr. Apology.” As thousands of callers flooded the line, confessing to everything from shoplifting to infidelity, drug dealing to murder, Mr. Apology realized he couldn’t just listen. He had to do something, even if it meant risking everything. From Wondery the makers of Dr. Death and The Shrink Next Door, comes a story about empathy, deception and obsession. Marissa Bridge, who knew Mr. Apology better than anyone, hosts this six episode series.

you guys forced a podcast to fit into the true crime genre when it obviously doesn’t belong here. 2 episodes in it started to become very apparent that no crime had or would occur. i get that the narrator was a big part of the story but really, she needed to be replaced. the whole thing is rough. i expected more from wondery. really let me down. with this BIG FAT LIE of a FAKE CRIME.

I really wanted to stick with this podcast as the content appeals to me. The narrator’s overly emotive voice did me in. Had to delete. I felt like I was listening to someone try out for a play. Just speak normally!!!!

Incredibly, incredibly slow. Like get to the point. Also it’s boring to hear a script read in monotone alongside monotone recordings from 40 years ago. Too many ads.

The recordings need to be enhanced or not used at all. Have an actor read the transcript of the call.

Pros: Intriguing to hear the actual confessions. Wish the audio didn’t sound so muffled, but understandable as they are aged recordings.
Side note/con: Could definitely do without a lot of the life story. Rather than interesting, the narrator and her late husband sound pretentious. They make a big point of being ~artists in New York.~ Rolled my eyes at cocaine lines, hair on fire, shoplifting in department stores.

Voyeurism to the extreme

I found it fascinating at first, a bit of voyeurism I suppose- but the more I listened the more creeped out I felt and I finally had to stop, I couldn’t hear it anymore. I felt bad for the narrator/wife, what she had to deal with, it wasn’t right.

I find her narration calm and soothing while letting us in to this horrifying story. She provides just the right counterpoint.
Some of the callers are downright terrifying. The tapes give us a disturbing look into the callers' minds.

I love the idea and true story behind this podcast. But the execution left a lot to be desired. The sound quality on the recordings is abysmal - and they’re the centerpiece of the show! I get that they’re old recordings and the technology wasn’t what it is today but they’re almost completely unintelligible. I had to wait for the narrator’s explanation each time. It just gets old. I also wish the narration wasn’t so scripted. It would be 10 times better if she just told her story, more of an interview style rather than reading off a piece of paper. Good podcast, but I probably won’t keep listening.

Seems like a good podcast but EXTREMELY difficult to understand the phone calls; which make up a good chunk of podcast. If you can get over that - decent podcast. If not, prepare to be very frustrated as you play and replay the phone calls; struggling to understand them.

This is so well done, and keeps the listener eager for more. I wish I could binge this, as the story is just fascinating and intriguing. As someone who loves true crime, you can relate to Alan’s desire to continue his quest to connect with Richie, but the pragmatic side screams to run. It is psychological and dissects everyone’s interest in crime and the dark side of humanity.

A chilling glimpse into the human psyche!

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, but this one has been, by far, the most compelling and addictive one I’ve ever heard! Each episode is more exciting and fascinating than the last, and I absolutely cannot wait for the next episode each time! Just an EXCEPTIONAL podcast! A MUST LISTEN!!!!!

Of course it’s good! But I don’t enjoy the voice and I can’t get over that.... seems like it’s on a 1.25 speed mode or something. But the story line is interesting, will make an effort to listen but the voice makes me
not focus on the story.
