In a special Opinion Audio bonanza, Kara Swisher, Jane Coaston (The Argument) and Ezra Klein (The Ezra Klein Show) sit down to discuss what went wrong for the G.O.P. in the recall election of Gov. Gavin Newsom of California. “This was where the nationalization of politics really bit back for Republicans,” Jane says. The three hosts then debate whether the media industry’s criticism of itself does any good at all. “The media tweets like nobody’s watching,” Ezra says. Then the hosts turn to The Wall Street Journal’s revelations in “The Facebook Files” and discuss how to hold Facebook accountable. “We’re saying your tools in the hands of malevolent players are super dangerous,” Kara says, “but we have no power over them whatsoever.”
And last, Ezra, Jane and Kara offer recommendations to take you deep into history, fantasy and psychotropics.

Hi Team Kara, so dismayed by the FB sponsorship/ad and as a long time listener of Pivot it feels so disingenuous of Kara to allow FB $$$$$ when she so clearly disagrees with them on Pivot. Maybe she’s wearing a costume on this show but I would love to to imagine her not falling to the trough of hypocrisy that so permeates our modern podcast reality. Thank you for most of what you do.

Kara is a master of conversation, regardless of who she’s speaking with. I find myself sad at the end of each episode that it isn’t longer. I could listen to her talk to a wall, and I’m sure it would be fascinating.

SWAY is woke garbage, and Kara Swisher is not a journalist but an extreme left, woke advocate. I understand this is “opinion,” but all of The Times is opinion these days. The Times—SWAY included—is simply an arm of the extreme left of the Democratic Party—part of the Deep State, really. SWAY is sickening, and Kara is very stupid.

Frustrated by her constant snark

I generally enjoyed this podcast at first but I became extremely frustrated with her penchant for being snarky and sometimes rude to guests, almost acting as if her presence is just as important as the guest she is interviewing. What finally pushed me to write this review was the episode with Patrick Soon-Shiong. He was in the middle of a sentence about his journey developing Abraxane and was interrupted by Kara needing to point out he met with trump (a fact that was irrelevant to the conversation at hand). It completely derailed the conversation and they never returned to the topic so he could complete his train of thought, which I really wanted to hear. I was far more interested in learning about him bringing a novel cancer treatment to market than I was about the fact he declined a job with the trump administration. It turned an interesting conversation with an interesting person about the scientific and regulatory path to bringing a novel therapy to market into a political one for no reason (at least no meaningful reason that I could ascertain). I will now go do more research on my own to hopefully figure out what he was going to say before he was interrupted. Please stop derailing conversations with your guests.

Get ready to be annoyed.

The interviewer continuously asks a question and cuts off the guests while they are trying to answer. The best description would be an “Old Time” newspaper reporter trying to get a headline and pummeling their subject with all sorts of different questions to get the right sound bite and sound really cunning but it comes off condescending in the end. To the podcasts credit they do get some good guests but I always come out of it feeling bad for them because only the host is edited to sound like the winner.

Let the conversations breathe.

The editing is so rapid-fire here thats it takes away from two people having a conversation. Pauses are removed in a way that feels very artificial.

Kara, you had Jason on the ropes from the beginning of the episode. You called him out on his statement that the social media companies colluded to remove Trump from their platforms when there was no proof. Unfortunately, many statements are made by our leaders and their lackeys which are simply conjecture based on ether. You are a relentless interviewer, who has the talent, intelligence and fortitude necessary to keep these purveyors of crap make sure they have the facts to backup their statements.

It is rare to see a reporter push back on the spot, during the interviews, when so many false statements are peddled by people that believe that whatever they say, it is up to the audience to prove they are lying, rather than them making the case that what they say is true. She is informed and able to challenge speakers when appropriate.

These are pretty lightweight podcasts. Every time I listen, I hope for solid information and in-depth treatment of the subject. These barely brush the surface and it's more like chit-chat where the object of the discussion is touched, but segues into fluff. These are not really informative or particularly interesting. It's basically gossip.

I have listened to this podcast since its inception but have unsubscribed after listening to the Ken Burns episode. The host was consistently obnoxious throughout the interview. Her attempt at being edgy as she treated this “white guy who lives in New Hampshire” as an old chum is entirely unpalatable. One of the best examples comes when Burns and Swisher agree on a preference for something and the host states, “God, we have a lot in common, Ken. That’s disturbing.” No Ms. Swisher, what is disturbing is that you are speaking to the most respected documentary film maker in the country as if he is worthy of scorn and mockery. Would the host have used these put-downs if Burns were Black or a woman or a member of the LGBT community? I doubt it. Because, you see, for Swisher there is nothing more contemptable than being a white, straight male in the United States.

I love this podcast and Kara’s style. She is informed and knowledgeable, the topics are always so relevant and important, and she is not afraid to ask tough questions. Some say she is aggressive and rude, I say she is smart, sharp and not intimidated by powerful people. I want the host to ask difficult questions such as why Master card couldn’t stop payments for child pornography earlier. I liked how she kept pushing Guy Fierri until he finally admitted that despite his folksy persona, he really sees nothing wrong with the way the restaurant industry exploits and underpays their (his) employees. Kara is an amazing journalist and I wonder if she would be described as rude and abrasive if she were a man.

Robot Therapists?

 –

Robot indeed. Psychotherapy is a “process-oriented” experience: being in the room with the client/therapist, noticing non-verbal communication, just sitting sometimes and observing each other, having eye contact. And you bet it’s awkward at times, by design. Healing and change are not about diagnosis, protocols, or communication “strategies” but is an experience uniquely different from any other.
Therapy by zoom is not personal therapy. And I could not fathom how Mr. Frank, a marketing guy, could boldly state that his screen therapy brings more people in: into what?
As a licensed psychotherapist, I chose not to conduct therapy by computer screen during covid because it omits the human aspect of therapy.
Before making that a decision, I did explore the idea of conducting tele-therapy when covid hit. As I was being “onboarded”, I learned that most tele-therapy companies/empires like Talkspace avoid the folks that most need therapy: those who consider suicide every day, those who cannot self-regulate consistently, those that cannot cope easily with every day life, adolescents starving for personal connection and empathy. With tele-therapy if a therapist assesses serious psychological distress, she is instructed to contact the management so those may be “referred out. “ Wouldn’t want the most needy to interfere with a smooth running machine.
But Mr. Frank is correct about one thing: mental health is a broken system, in great part because our healthcare system looks for shortcuts, to keep their bottom line profitable. Obviously Mr. Frank has grand plans for doing just the same, by selecting those well-adjusted and self-regulated folks who just need a little chat.
Thank you Kara, for asking the tough questions…Mr. Frank is well-versed on how best to market his answers.

I have enjoyed most of the guests and I really wanted to like this podcast. But I find the host to be rude and impatient and dismissive of her guests. I can’t count the number of times in one segment the guest will give a thoughtful answer, and the host will quickly say “yeah” then jump to another question. She is just rifling questions, as if from a script, with no reflection or follow-up. She comes across as uninterested in the guests. I will unsubscribe.

Kara asks great questions to really smart people and her humor and principles add to the work. She's just great; and I was excited to hear her tell Chelsea Handler that she doesn't drink and hasn't done drugs. Good for her. For me, pot is a gateway drug to alcohol and I think it's unsettling that so many like Chelsea are practically deifying it; I don't think it's so harmless at all.

First, I love your podcast. I’ve only been listening for a month but have enjoyed it immensely.
Unfortunately I have decided not to listen anymore. I choose to elevate my listening to facts and opinions that don’t routinely rely on cussing- especially the F word. I am not a prude but I live my life with the intention of reaching for my ‘better angels’. Jumping into the gutter is very easy to do - reaching for our best self is a day to day process and can be hard work.
I’m sure the fact that ‘everyone’ cusses is proof you are appropriate but I don’t want the influence.
If you ever regroup and discourage guests from cussing please let me know! I’m back!
