The sound editing is pretty distracting/annoying and it comes across as very self indulgent. I don't remember an episode where the sound edits had ANYTHING to do with moving the story forward. If you skip past the dreadful opening sequence (super irritating), and the unnerving overproduction, the stories can be pretty interesting.

Love the variety of topics that they investigate. Always interested to discover whats coming next. They ask the questions that I am thinking, sometimes I think they read my mind as I am listening. They are funny, thought provoking, creative, interesting and enjoyable. I have listened to many of these with my youngest daughter, who is 11 and it have created a space for interesting conversations that would not have otherwise happened, if not for listening to this awesome podcast. My daughters favorite one is, " Colors " :) I love too many of them to pick a favorite,.

It's been a while since My personal beliefs have been so thoroughly torn apart. The most recent episode, focusing on revising the fault line, and the corresponding piece on blame, I listened to both out of curiosity, have made me seriously reevaluate most of my beliefs. Frankly, I should probably thank you for helping me move further from the sort of person who believes things for the sheer convenience those beliefs provide. On the flip side, I must admit that I sort of hate you. You have placed before me two courses of action. I could spend days, weeks, even the rest of my life attempting to consolidate my personal convictions and what I as a logical creature, and an individual who has personal experience with neurological disease, knows to be true. Or I can choose to ignore the inconsistencies I'm faced with, remain conscious of my own hypocrisy and evolve into the sort of person despise. Your program has arguably ruined my life.
Keep up the good work, I look forward to future episodes.

Always in the top five, often in the top three, and, sometimes, better than anything this world has ever seen before. A long-time listener of many podcasts, I was moved by this latest show "Revising the fault line" to chime-in. Free will is the issue. Free will if not meaningless is powerless. Often we see that a little bit of something is functionally equivalent to none at all; and such is definitely the case when it comes to free will.

For years I've listened to Radiolab and have greatly enjoyed the stories. I've recommended this podcast to family and friends, and even provided financial contributions directly to Radiolab through WNYC. It seems like over the last year or so Radiolab has moved away from reporting about science and engaging story telling, and instead has become very politically themed. I've really lost interest more recently with a story about a transgender gondolier and two episodes on police violence. I've already discontinued my financial contributions and if Radiolab fails to find its original content within scientific based discussions and story telling, they'll lose me as a listener. And that makes me sad.

Fascinating and often mind-blowing content presented in an entertaining and engaging way. The fact is that straight up interviews tend to ramble and lose focus – Jad's impeccable editing and sound design keep the episodes on topic and engrossing. Yellow Rain, two years later

I happily and eagerly listened to Radiolab podcasts when they came out. They were often full of thoughtful discussion and interesting facts on subjects that ran the gamut. And then I listened to the episode entitled “Yellow Rain.” Since I was a subscriber, I heard the original episode, which RadioLab would go on to amend and issue a series of apologies for. By the episode’s end, I was made intensely uncomfortable by the hosts’ interrogation of the Hmong guests. I haven’t listened to it since, yet I still vividly recall that original, visceral emotional response whenever I hear anything related to the show or the hosts. (By the end, the writer who was translating for the victim was in tears.) I choose not to comment on any racism, overt or (more probably) otherwise, that permeated the interview. I want to believe the best in people, in their intentions. Actions speak louder than words, and no amount of verbiage could make up for what transpired in the original interview.

Then I began to notice that when they did stories I already new something about while the facts were not wrong there was a lot of stretching of the truth. I still listened. I finally stopped listening when they started in with a lot of moralizing and began to leave a bad taste in my mouth, ultimatly detracting from the science.

I subscribed to this podcast for pretty much it's whole existence, and mostly because of it I continued my contributions to WNYC even though I'd moved out of NY. The editing, sound collaging and many of the topics the show took on were fresh and unique. But after a few years this began to get old and predictable, and the show became more interested in it's own voice than in the topics it was covering. It became a sort of parody: science lite with zippy audio. And it turned out the science lite was not even correct: see the "yellow rain" bungle and the Jonah Lerher debacle, which was handled very poorly and without any kind of contrition to listeners. So I removed Radiolab from my podcast IV drip and stopped giving money to WNYC. Six months on, I don't miss it.

This podcast covers very interesting topics from a wonderfully accessible perspective and has access to noteworthy and talented guests. So what's the problem? It's done in this very specific style that I guess plenty of people like but makes me want to smash my radio. They edit and sample the audio like it was a rap song - if they're talking about money cash registers ring in the background, if they're saying facts came to light you hear a newsboy yelling 'extra extra' and people incessantly interrupt and finish each other's sentences. Like they ask a question and someone different, who hasn't been in the podcast at all up to that point, answers. It may be just a matter of style, and preference. To me though, the impression it gives is that if you have grown up with five windows open on your tablet and something else playing in your headphones while you text and occassionally interupt or join the conversations going on around you then this show will be a nice puzzle piece for the jagged edges of your addled brain. But if you have ever read a book, listened to someone, or done anything else that involves one single focus for more than three seconds, this show is like fingernails on a chalkboard. The other problem is a lot of these cutesy effects seem very contrived along the path to self-awarded prizes for cleverness. It's like it HAS to be different to prove it's smarter and better, and the shame is the content would do that on its own. Lots of people love it but to me it seems like the podcast squirrels would make if they could, and lived in Brooklyn and could sculpt their fur into ironic handlebar mustaches. It's the official hipster podcast, so I guess it all comes down to which side of that issue you're on.

The topics are very interesting, but I cannot stand to listen to this show with all those annoying sound effects, voice splicing, etc. The production sounds like it was made by a kid who just got a new sound effects computer program. I used to love this show until they just started posting shorts, rebroadcasts of old shows and dumb music shows that no one wants to hear. They gained an audience talking about cutting-edge science in an hour-long format... So logically, their fans want a 20 minute remix show? Change formats and I'll happily 5-star it... Until then, its one-star.

This show is frustrating and disjointed. With an ADD "line by line" approach, it disorients you similarly to skipping through random radio stations covering a similar subject. That it's affiliated with NPR is even more surprising.
As someone who edits audio and video professionally, I understand that this form of presentation is far more difficult than a standard show. I have to give them props for that. But, necessary..?
Studying other reviews I realize that I am a practically solitary voice in the desert with this particular viewpoint. So, this makes me your grain of salt in a bowl of sugar.

Great Concept, Terrible Format

 –
SsurTrebor
 –
2011-02-23
The concept of Radio Lab is, as I understand it, exploring modern science and such, correct?
If I'm mistaken, can I really be blamed, because the way every show is done is terrible and sloppy. The hosts constantly talk over the interviewee, without completely muting them. Audio clips are spliced so that the hosts end up telling more of the story, with the interviewee saying one or two short words in there.
Radio Lab also assumes its listeners have terribly short memory (or they know that their current format is so confusing), because the hosts give constant reminders to the audience regarding details in the story (an example is during the episode "Lost and Found" where Emily's mom mentions Emily needing hearing aids, and not 2 minutes later, the host interrupts the story to remind the listener that Emily needs hearing aids).
All in all, it is a terrible show to listen to. Episodes become nothing more than a splice of random people saying different things that somehow form a sentence, and no interviewee can get a word in edgewise. As soon as they, do the hosts lower their audio levels and just summarize the interview!
Either let the interviewee say waht they need to, or summarize. Don't do both! I'm glad I unsubscribed.

Radio Lab is so entertaining that I actually look forward to performing mindless, repetitive tasks in a (non-radio) lab, as long as I've remembered to bring my iPod to work. Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich's investigations pull together fascinating stories, illuminating interviews, even poetry. It brings science out of the realm of technical jargon and weaves it into everyday human experiences: It'll move you as surely as the sappiest soap opera, but will leave you with much more to think about. As someone with a science background I find it refreshing, but it would be accessible and entertaining even if you'd never taken a science class in your life.
This is a consistently good podcast, I definitely recommend it.

By using collage and digital sound mixing, these people think they've arrived at some slick new way of telling a story. Jad and Robert foray into great science topics with an intellectual eye and the curiosity of a child. They both have differing ways of looking at things and finding common ground comes about from the learning process. This show is about that process, and we get to learn along with them. Superbly constructed, every show is a story that develops from a question, and that story branches out into many avenues of thought. There are no wrong turns and around every corner there is more to explore. Sometimes you don't quite get a definite explanation, but that's just the state of the art as far as science is concerned, and its design to inspire us to continue that discovery process after the show is over. Thankfully all of the shows are still available from the subscription - I may just have to go listen to them again...

Radiolab's intriguing topics and examples are already enough to catch the every-day listener's attention, but perhaps its greatest 'ear-candy' achievement is its fresh use of audio sound bridges and other unconventional (for radio) sound-editing techniques, which continue to progress as each new episode begins. More than any other public radio program, Radiolab accomplishes the difficult task of using experimental design while still keeping more than just the artists and college students entertained. It may start new trends and eventually set the pace for later radio shows competing for the attention of younger audiences who prefer the Internet or television for their sources of informative entertainment. Though its seemingly ‘mind-blowing’ discussions may be nothing new to the more erudite radio listeners, Radiolab exceeds more scholarly radio programs in its ability to cover a broad array of thought-provoking topics in a simple, understandable manner and remains relatively open-ended. Thus it stimulates interest to the general public on topics that wouldn’t normally be considered interesting. This in itself is a feat worthy of five stars. It’s a program whose episodes you may not want to delete after listening to them for the first time!

Having been a fairly devoted NPR listener for years I feel I can safely say this is one of the very best programs to come across their airwaves. It combines the intellect and curiosity of NPR's science and news shows with the whimsy and playfullness of This American Life for a completely unique experience that draws you in as it teaches. Yet another success story from the minds of public radio!

They could make boredom interesting

After listening to an episode you feel like you were blind and can now see. They take everyday functions and things we take for granted and seem monotonous and give it a whole new perspective. You do not really have sight until they explain the complexeties of what goes into it.
I am serious with my title and actually hope they will cover boredom, because I know their explanation and research will make my life better because I understand myself and appreciate me more after listening to them.
Cheers to you!

A case of how the hosts and excessive editing can get in the way of the material. The stories are compelling: "Zoos" was a fine example. But the needless audio effects and the incessant banter of the hosts (as if Click and Clack took over This American Life-- I shudder to think) takes away from the experience. Its just not worth having to wade through the dumbed-down presentation to get to the nuggets of good content.

This podcast is one of the most intellectual, spiritual and philosophical segments of audio out there. It's something for everyone, and everything for each. They way they tie the facts and intellect to the whole of a person and life is great work. You will be completely absorbed when listening to it, so take especial care if listening while driving.

A Wonderful Show - Interesting, Provocative and Fun!

The hosts take you on a journey, detouring here and there with dissonant vibrations, echoing back to the central theme. The show will draw you in and open your mind. Great fun!

The host banter is great, the ideas are amazing and thorough, but what puts this show over the top is the production and editing. I honestly haven't heard anything like it. Bravo WNYC!

This is without a doubt my favorite podcast. I listen to this often on my commute home from work, and the many intriguing topics that presented are a great way to wind down and stretch my mind a bit. I often find myself sitting in my car for 15 mintues after I get home just so I can finish listening. I sometimes cant tear myself away from it! What really needs to be mentioned is the incredible production quality. The sound effects, editing, sound levels, etc... are all perfect. These guys do an amazing job. I've recommended this podcast to everyone I know.

I'm admittedly an NPR junkie. I almost didn't get an iPod for want of a radio tuner... Radio Lab is just about the absolute pinnacle of what Public Radio can hope to achieve. It's up there with This American Life, A Prairie Home Companion, and Car Talk as radio shows that, not only are great to listen to live, but to go back to again over the years. The only problem with this show is that there is not more. Please donate with the request that they make more Radio Lab.

Without a doubt the absolute best podcast out there. I find myself checking back all too frequently to see if another release is available. Thought provoking, and perpetually interesting. Jad and Robert work together marvelously and their interviews are wonderful. Do not pass this up!

I live for Radio Lab.

I'm not kidding. I am obsessed with this show. What others have said - that it's the best show on radio, that this is what radio should be, that they come home hitting refresh repeatedly on iTunes to see if new episodes are out - is absolutely the truth.
This show is at once educational, stimulating, and entertaining. The editing may be one of my favorite things about it, actually. It definitely keeps you on your toes, and it's most definitely not one of those podcasts you sit through for an hour and suddenly realize you haven't been paying attention to any of it.

Jad and Robert make one of the greatest teams radio has ever seen. This is one of the few podcasts that deserve repeated listens. Informative, innovative, artistic, scientific ... what else can one say? Radio at its greatest.

Sort of science-y but presented in a really unique way. Popular science and philsophy presented by two really interested non-experts. Shows with multiple segments grouped around a interesting, non-fiction theme. The production is quite quirky; outtakes and distored clips mixed in just enough for fun but not too much to detract from the real content. I wish more podcasts were like this.

the host's voices are beautiful, especially Jad Abumrad's voice. the production is so smooth, the transitions are effortless, and the entire episodes have such amazing flow you'll find yourself just slipping away from w/e you're doing so your brain can focus on what they're talking about; speaking of which, the subject matter of each program is always interesting/informative/infotaining.this podcast pretty much just rules all around!

Please, please make more episodes! This, without exaggeration, is the best radio show ever made. I'd be willing to pay a handsome sum for it.

RadioLab gets funding from NPR, and I wish NPR would support more creative and original programming like this. Each episode is very thought-provoking and surprising. My only complaints are that Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich's interactions are sometimes too obviously scripted but made to sound spontaneous, and that the sound editing sometimes can be distracting (ex: often Abumbrad or Krulwich will introduce someone after they introduced themselves--"Hi, my name is Jane Doe" "This is Jane Doe, a professor...") in trying to be too clever.

Simply the best of radio.

This is great! Whenever I open iTunes, I'm hoping to see a new episode. Having left New York years ago, WYNC is one of the things I've really missed. Being able to hear programs like this is what Podcasting is for. Jad and Robert are great hosts--they facilitate the show without becoming the show. Can't wait for mor episodes!

I've been listening to Radiolab for over a year, and even requested they add it to their offering of podcasts. It's so exciting to see it finally available. Wonderful show for listening while driving, and with podcasts now I can catch up on all the missed episodes! Radiolab is like that book you can't put down, turning page after page, it's almost disappointing when you get to the end of an episode.

This podcast stands out as pretty much constantly astounding. As someone who writes about science for a living, the 'scientific' concepts here are rendered in an enviably fascinating and pretty much idiot-proof way. It's a testament to the skills of the hosts in their use of the audio format that they can cruise through really complex stuff and give the ordinary listener entertainment and learning in a single scoop. This is the best. Now if they would only get season one on itunes....

Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich captivate the imagination with the best original topics and discussion in a the most fun sounding experience found on radio or online. From broad topics like "outer space" to "understanding basic Music language", each show takes the listener on an exploration into the overlooked of the everyday. This is a really great show that is extremely well produced.
