This is highly entertaining, unscrupulous, faux-journalism. The mimicry of empathy is almost entertaining. The narrator sounds like This American Life without any morals or standards. His whining and fake crying all but ruin what is admittedly an interesting story. (At least he’s not that dopey sounding guy from Atlanta Monster.)
Can’t wait for the next episode of this trash. This is the stolen fast food of podcasts. Shame on iTunes for promoting this on the home page.

I love this podcast!! But... has anybody thought about how Mary’s and Chance’s stories don’t add up about Chris’ drive in episodes 5-6??🤔🤔

I love how all these reviewers are putting 1 star and talking about how the host has no sympathy. Let me break it down for you... the dude killed someone and they over looked it... I don’t have sympathy for Chris’ family. Don’t listen if you don’t like it. Adea’s story should be told. No one was fighting for the real victim and her story but the host. Maybe she wasn’t the best person in their relationship, but that doesn’t mean she deserves to be murdered. He lied to everyone and played everyone... I love the reporting and thank you for telling Adea’s story.

This is where True crime and investigative journalism has gone too far. The police tell you to go to way because you’re messing up the investigation. The police aren’t picking up a suspect because they’re gathering information, and you’re getting in the way -possibly alerting the suspect that there is suspicion around him. You, the friends, and the P.I. are doing wrong by this victim. It is an active investigation. Stay away!

Not sure why people are leaving such negative reviews. It’s a great podcast. It’s super interesting. The reporter is very diligent and is genuinely interested in finding the truth. I am super engaged. I can’t wait for more episodes to be released.

Would haven a negative ten- star rating if the option was available. How did this ever get released? “Host” is cluelessness & unable to string a story together. And, extremely unethical. Not too bright, either ~ who puts on a strung-out addict to tell an obviously fabricated version of events???

Irresponsible ‘journalism’

 –
Brandel1313

2019-03-23
To say this is irresponsible is an understatement, to say this is ‘journalism’ is a disservice to actual journalists!
This is a podcast by the dude who wrote a book on how to pick-up women because he was a loser who no girl would give a second look to.
Now his insecurities are glaringly on display as he tries to insert himself into this tragic story.
This podcast is pushing the line of unethical right up to illegal.
It’s beyond disgusting at how gleeful Neil (narrator) is at the suicide of a guy he’s been harassing to ‘get the story’ and the utter joy Neil expresses in being the one to talk to family and friends less than 24hrs after the suicide. If this is journalism, then journalism is dead!

Exploited and irresponsible

This ‘journalist!’ gives a potential suspect previously unknown information over the phone before he is interviewed by police. Hindering investigations and exploiting loss for a podcast? Trash. Crocodile tears indeed.

The first episode starts a little slow but then the story picks up and by episode 5, I was hooked. I wish the episodes were longer. Better than “over my dead body”.
Recent reviews keep saying “unethical” but you have to remember the witnesses have AGREED to be put on the podcast. They want their side to be told and even thank the host for speaking with them. It’s investigative journalism so he will be trying to get to witnesses before anyone else. That’s what any investigator would do.

Way Better than npr

This podcast is the process of investigating a crime. Many say it’s unethical, but ignore that Strauss was called to the task considering the slow process taken by the LAPD. This is a real-time account of the process and it makes for a riveting show.
I recommend not going to Google as you listen because there are many spoilers so I won’t say more, but that is the only area where this show could have been better.
But then again, this isn’t a show. This was a crime scene investigation done through a grassroots effort and I hope it changes the way missing people are found more often, and applies not just to celebrities in Hollywood but regular people too, as well as dogs and cats.

I heard about this podcast in a commercial from listening to Up and Vanished and I have to say this podcast is freakin great! If you like Up and Vanished then you will love this story. Neil (the host) is great too, his reporting skills along with his intensity / passion for this case makes listening to him tel it feel like you’re there with him. I hope to see more podcasts hosted from Neil Strauss in the future! Double thumbs up 👍🏼

Completely unethical and potentially even illegal for this guy to be tampering with an ongoing investigation for the sake of a podcast. Still blown away that they included the call with Mary less than a day after her fiancé committed suicide. Completely tasteless, and poorly narrated on top of it.

Exploitative

I really enjoyed this podcast up until Episode 5. Hearing the absolute glee Neil got from talking to the fiance within hours of hearing the news of Spotz's suicide was disgusting. Hold it together, man, and keep it professional. Still, I stuck around for Episode 6. At this point the podcast seems to be erring on the side of sensationalism rather than verified facts. Again, I was struck by, what seemed to me to be false sympathy on Neil's part. He's too eager to get the dirt from anyone who will give it and it shows.
Unlike a lot of the other reviews I really enjoy the other podcasts presented by Tenderfoot TV and Payne Lindsay, but this is a far cry from what I've come to expect of them.

Midway through episode one I was thinking this podcast gave me the heebie jeebies, and not from the content. The narrator makes this woman’s disappearance all about his experience, his emotions, him him him. Then I heard the credits and realized it’s a Payne Lindsey show, so that makes sense now. It’s not true crime, it’s white man self congratulates on how awesome it is he is doing something after terrible things happened to a woman!
Pass. Guys, hire some women and poc over there at tenderfoot.

How does this have 4.5 stars?

I first heard about Chris Spotz during another podcast that reviewed the Shabani case and I was intrigued about how her disappearance occurred. I always felt like Spotz was a suspect so I’m glad to see this podcast covering the story. The Shabani family deserves to know what happened. Great reporting and the flow of the episodes truly feels like everything is being uncovered in really time with a wonderful storytelling element.

Dude, like man dude, I’ve never heard so many dudes over 40 saying “dude” so much. The LA stereotypes are real. I’m listening because their hooks are effective. I just want to know where the girl is. So far it’s just a shaggy dog story that you could tell in 10 minutes. Instead it’s drawing out with false and created side stories. I knew this was pulp when I heard so many ads before during and after. Ads for furniture and other stuff completely unrelated.

Interesting story and quite suspenseful.
I do have a request though. In the end credits where you say “produced by myself,” it should really be “produced by me.” There’s this odd swing in people trying to substitute myself when they should use me or I. It discredits one’s intelligence.

This seems a bit unethical to report this heavily real-time. I feel weird listening to it. The story is very very wild almost to the point it’s unbelievable. Not sure what to think of it or if to continue. We’ll see.
Also, the podcast is very overproduced. Narrator tries too hard to make dramatic pauses throughout the story and even the commercials. It’s like if NPR-voice has a baby with someone reading poetry for the first time. It takes away from the story and makes it feel fictionalized.

Has anyone listened to “A Very Fatal Murder” by The Onion? This could be that podcast, except the guys on here do not have enough self awareness to realize how unethical and laughable their “reporting” truly is.
At one point (when they’re pinging chris’s phone) the narrator even says “yeah this is unethical and I disagree with it but... meh? After that I stopped listening. Please stop bending your morals and pretending like you are smarter than the police.
