Talking Cold: Discussion of Episode 7

Talking Cold: Discussion of Episode 7

Time: 39:37
A prison snitch can sometimes provide vital leads about a case, but is it always reliable information? Amy Donaldson and Ann Dent talk with former Salt Lake Police chief Chris Burbank about the pros and cons of information coming from a suspected criminal. Chris currently serves on a national level as the Vice President of law enforcement strategy for the Center for Policing Equity.
Talking Cold is honest and frank conversations about the issues brought forward in the latest episode of the Cold podcast. We begin with Cold season 2: Justice for Joyce. Three ladies, Amy Donaldson, Ann Dent and Sheryl Worsley will talk about weighty issues like sexual assault, the death penalty and failures of the criminal justice system. The goal is more conversation and more understanding.
Spoiler alert! You will want to listen to the main story on Amazon Music before listening to our conversation because we will talk about what happens on the show.

Incredibly Confusing Format of Episodes

I found this story interesting but the format of the episodes, week to week, was so confusing to me I had to stop listening. I’m a podcast junkie, so this is saying a lot.

I really enjoyed the first four episodes of season 1. Unfortunately, that’s all that is available for season one on this platform. Less than 1/3 of the episodes available for this season elsewhere. I’m going to check out other platforms—I enjoyed the podcast that much. ,But on this platform, I’m going to have to rate it at 3 stars because of missing content. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.

I listen to A LOT of crime podcasts, but this is excellent! I raised my kids in Puyallup and lived in Tacoma when the horrible ending came to this sad, sad, story. So many details I didn’t know, etc... Amazing! This host needs to do more!!!!! LOVE!!!

Highly recommend!

Two fascinating seasons of Cold! Thank you for all the research that goes into each episode. Such tragic stories but such good cautionary tales for everyone else. A huge thank you to the families for allowing these stories to be told.

I’m not sure how to feel about this podcast. Content is good. Narrator is good. But, the episode selection seems terribly disorganized. In season 1, did we really end after E4??? Is there no conclusion?? Or am I missing something? Why are there bonus episodes talking about discussions about E9? What is E9?! I can only see two seasons and both have no more than 4 episodes.

Where are the episodes?!!’

I’ve been searching for something like this podcast. Through trial and error I finally found this one, I’m still on season 1 and I just look forward to being alone to get through the episode, it’s very addicting and really has me captivated. I’m actually sad to read other comments about having to switch. I guess I’ll try it out and hope it’s an easy transition. Otherwise I’ll cross my fingers it’s back on Apple.

Seasons 1 and 2 are great and I don’t mind the change in platforms. However, the “Talking” episodes are imbalanced and seem agenda driven. The hosts and most of the guests have a clear leftward bent.

Great storytelling, but...

Love Dave’s story telling. Both seasons are fantastic. Got through season 2 on Amazon music. I certainly hope whatever contract you signed with Amazon music doesn’t include season 3, and it will be on Apple podcasts. Amazon music was a frustrating app to use. I could go on, but I’ll spare you- as it seems lots of people have had similar problems.

Season 2 left me in the cold

I enjoyed season 1, so I started season 2 looking forward to it. I found the first episode incredibly hard to follow because there were SO MANY characters. I found myself saying, wait, who is that again? I’d intended to give it another episode until I realized the rest of the season is exclusive to Amazon music.
I totally understand podcasters need to earn money. I support many that I love on Patreon for that reason. But I’ll never listen to a platform exclusive podcast. I use a specific app to listen to podcasts where I’m reminded of new episodes that I’m subscribed to. I’m never going to remember to open some random app I had to download for one show and don’t use for anything else. There are podcast specific apps because the user experience on music apps is terrible. And I don’t have a prime account and do everything I can to avoid using Amazon so that’s really the nail in the coffin.

Please listen to this

I have listened to season one in its entirety at least six times and just finished season two today. More than anything, this podcast matters because of the way Dave frames it. I appreciate how careful he is with the material and how clear he is about the importance of these stories. Thank you, Dave, for giving a voice to Susan and Joyce. The ending of season two brought me to tears and I cannot over state how important this podcast is to listen to.

I want to applaud Dave Crawley for the way he wrapped up season 3. His acknowledgment of the injustice Joyce Youst and so many other women is commendable. The fact that, as with the Susan Powell case, he tells her story which is usually done with true crime tales.

Love season 1 and 2, but I sure wish they weren’t Amazon exclusive. I can only get my podcasts on Amazon music to play 1/2 of the time and the other 1/2 it always says “playback failed”. It’s not operator error, I promise. Anyhow, keep up the great work. Can’t wait for season 3!

I started listening to season 2 here on Apple, got hooked on the story after listening to episodes 1 and 2, so I downloaded Amazon Music to continue listening. But Amazon Music starts with episode 5.
Talk about a ‘bait and switch’ racket. I don’t want to continue with what I hear is a lousy app, and I certainly don’t want to upgrade to catch two episodes. I can do without listening to the podcast. You’ve lost me as a listener.

Thank you Dave

Season 2 is excellent. I agree with the above comments about the platform shift but, just having finished the last episode of Season 2, feel any inconvenience accrued in it’s listening IS WORTH IT! Dave is beyond thorough in his investigating and incredibly self-aware in his reporting. He bravely faces the complicated if not impossible task of giving voice to Joyce, perhaps articulating her story better than Joyce could herself. Dave’s empathy for Joyce and admiration of her bravery define Joyce as the hero of this podcast, in which she truly is.

I loved season 1 of Cold and have followed Cold very closely for updates over the years. I was extremely disappointed when season 2 announced they were moving to Amazon Music. Why??? Their music app crashes non-stop, has numerous bugs and errors so I can’t play an episode where left it, it starts over! This has been so frustrating to try to listen to Season 2 on Amazon Music. Their app is awful. Bring Cold back to Apple Podcasts!!!!

Absolutely loved this podcast, but I’m incredibly disappointed that it shifted to the Amazon platform. I even tried downloading the app specifically for this podcast, and it freezes and pushes you out of the app, not to mention lowers the audio quality. Loved season one and enjoyed what I’ve heard of season two; however, I can’t stand the Amazon platform because nine times out of ten it won’t work for me and I’ve pretty much given up on how to work with it. Would love to listen to more cold but can’t do much about them choosing a bad platform to stream with.
PS: Amazon, you are one of the worlds biggest companies; what is going on, Bezos?!?!

I love Cold! But I don’t like the Amazon platform. Bring it back to where it was before! I have had so many streaming issues with Amazon. Have to search and dig for it every week, rather than having notification and auto added to my listening list. It’s a real bummer!!!! If it was here like season 1 this would be a 5 star review.

I love everything about Cold. I would give it 10 stars! But I just started listening to the first discussion episode and its basically laying out everything that happens and ruining the surprise... I had no idea it was a tape case or sexual assault case or anything like that and the discussion episode is ruining all the surprises and suspense...

I loved Season 1. Great work! Season 2 starts off just fine, but the voiceover of the primary antagonist in the story makes this unlistenable. This is sad. Like so many audiobooks that have wonderful content destroyed by poor choice of narration. To be fair, the primary narrator is great. Please consider better talent for Season 3.

Amazon Music App Doesn’t Work

2021-05-27
So, I went through all this trouble to download the Amazon music app and sign up for that service and when I open the app to use it for the first time..... the app freezes and just shows me a black screen. It would never load or show me well ..... anything. I had to uninstall because the app just didn’t work. So..... In order to listen to this show, it’s a lot of trouble, too much trouble than it’s worth really. It’s unfortunate because the podcast is decent, but now streamed by a poor podcast service that can’t even get their act together to have an app that isn’t just blackness (even though it’s free, come on, my phone is new and there’s no other app on my phone does this - and Apple Podcasts works all the time - Amazon music app is just bad) it’s a shame

Very well told

This story is heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for Joyce's poor family. I hope that the are able to locate her body someday and find some sort of peace.
I listened to the 10th episode today, about the death penalty. My grandfather, Gerald Nielsen, was an Orem City police officer and detective. He was one of the arresting offices of Gary Gilmore, and the only officer that Gary would speak to during interrogations. We grew up hearing about this case, and I was interested to learn how it fit in with the rest of the US concerning the death penalty laws. Thank you for your great research.

Very thorough and interesting

I really love this podcast. Sometimes when someone is covering a case with so many details, it can get boring, but this is not one of those times. It’s amazing how it can hold your interest the whole time. The way he unfolds the story is important and very well-done. I listened to the first season a year or so ago, then I listened to it again because it was so interesting. Now I’m on Amazon music app and listening to second season and it’s just as well done as the first. I really hope Dave continues this podcast with future seasons, because I would definitely be tuning in. I will also say that I appreciate the professionalism of Dave, as he keeps anonymity as needed, very ethical journalism. I also appreciate that he honors what has happened to Susan Powell and Joyce Yost, as well as their surviving family members, He does them great justice. He’s not using their stories to exploit like some may do and that’s really refreshing.

Please stop posting talking cold on here!!
Disappointed that season 2 is only available on Amazon rather than posting it everywhere and letting people listen on their preferred app. It is also annoying that this weird season 2 after show still posts on here. Season one was really good but there are plenty of other podcasts to listen to on Apple rather than download yet another app to listen to this one. If you ever move it over here I’ll give it a listen.

I give this one star for it only being available through the useless Amazon Music app. I can’t open the app to continue listening which is super frustrating. No matter how many times I delete and reinstall the app I cannot get in to finish the season. COLD season 1... Riveting, story line, the details, incredibly well written.
COLD season 2... I listened to the first episode twice because there were a lot of people
To keep straight. Or maybe I missed some key details? Either way, the “flow” seemed off to me.
Now I’ve got to download another podcast platform! This has happened before, with other podcasts, and I’m burnt out. I’ve recommended cold season 1 to everyone I know- but that is where my recommendation will stop.
Why mess with a good thing?
You have ruined it.

Absolutely love this podcast and everything it stands for. Very upsetting that you sold out and went to an exclusive platform such as Amazon. (I dislike Amazon music because the layout of goofy and seems to never work for me) That’s why you got the three stars. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want it on every podcast out there to get the story out there. Make zero sense. Might as well delete your page on here because it’s useless now.

I LOVE this podcast, it’s excellent. But, the fact that I have to download a new app and use a company I loathe in order to listen to it has left me incredibly salty. The fact that it’s Amazon makes it even worse, jeff bezos is now forcing apps down our throats and this podcast is participating. Yuck!
