Quarantine Coronavirus April 2020: yay re: Tiger King! I love being a TCO Patron! Please do Cheer and How to Fix a Drug Scandal (super super important for our justice system)! Also love the Dixie Chicks’ cover of Goddess Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide!” Thank you two for being generally awesome and excellent human beings, and for saving my life (all of our lives) with your heartfelt, beautiful, and hilarious podcast. Every week I listen to my “best friends” honor victims and “garbage bell” the jerks who perpetrate the crimes.
Seriously, my life will NOT be complete w/out hearing the Gillian and Patrick analysis of Cheer, its culture, its coach who is a true Queen, its crimes against fashion and people, the weird similarities with the early 2000s Kirsten Dunst vehicle Bring it On (the choreographer dude?! Hello!), and above all the unexpected moments that truly broke my heart. I didn’t expect to care so much about this rag-tag group of crazy young athletes!! This is NOT about some pampered princesses — these guys and these girls come from some very tough backgrounds, and they work their arses off, truly, breaking wrists and ribs and ankles all.the.time.
I love Patrick and Gillian so much that I pretend they are my best friends. Yes it’s sad and pathetic — but that is how fantastic, smart, empathetic, generally charismatic, and courageous they are — they inspire me in every way, every time I listen! Their approach to true crime podcasting, which is becoming over-saturated quickly (true crime podcasting that is), is brilliantly unique. They focus on true crime documentaries, and they have plenty of brilliant observations about the crimes themselves, always show tremendous empathy for victims, and they do.not.have.time.for.ANYBODY’S sh*t. They also do a smashing job of evaluating how the documentaries tell the story of the crime(s) they present — each episode is filled with solid filmic analysis as well as fascinating analysis of the crimes featured in the documentaries.
So pleeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzy weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzy consider Cheer — I binged it, and I kept thinking about what Gillian and Patrick would say and if Gillian and Patrick would cry at the same moments — please! Love you two so much, and thank you for filling my life with such joy and — truly — such hope for humanity.
