Description

S-Town is a new podcast from Serial and This American Life, hosted by Brian Reed, about a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who's allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But when someone else ends up dead, the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man's life.

They teased the murder thing so much, but strayed from that theme. If you're looking for a true crime podcast this is not the one for you. But otherwise it was a very interesting look into the mindset of rural america. Just kind of unsatisfying.

This was a weird story with no punchline or point. If you're affected by suicide I would not recommend this. What sounded like an interesting mystery around people in this town turned quickly into a depressing mess of a story.

I have lived the better part of my life in Alabama and can somewhat identify with those who have grown up in towns like Woodstock. I just pray that the listeners of this beautiful, fascinating, story don't think all Alabamians think and act like those portrayed in this podcast. I thank Brian and all the staff who made this possible. There is hope beyond Alabama football...

Although I was disappointed that the story line did not come full circle, I still really liked this podcast. I did not agree with many views shared by John B. but it was interesting to be able to enter the mind and hear the raw/intimate thoughts of a genius who suffered from some sort of mental illness. 4 stars bc it did not conclude. I would really like follow up episodes to check up on the characters.

I'm breathless after finishing the last episode ! My chest is heavy with the suffering and the exquisite beauty in this finely woven story. I can't say enought about Brian Reed's talent! I was hooked and stymied at every turn of the tale. Sad, real, enlightening, tender, compassionate, revealing, torn, complex, raw, astonishing. All these adjectives and more describe this layered, modern, twisted reality of a small town in America. I can only imagine how many times through this journey Brian had to ask himself, "Why me ?" "Is this assignment a blessing or a curse?" Kudos to you Brian. You did this tale justice. I texted my son, an organic farmer in Santa Cruz to ask him if he has listened to this podcast... His response: "Yes. Twice." Thank you for opening and moving my already tender heart. I feel like I want to sit down and have a much needed cry for all the torment AND the tenderness expressed in this story. This will sit with me for a long long time as a deeply humane story. A story that serves as an example of what judgement, shame, acceptance, tenderness, cruelty, insensitivity, intolerance, impatience, kindness and understanding can do to anyone of us at any time.

It's different but enjoyed it...

Amazing!! I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was listen to the last episode. I tried so hard last night to stay awake and finish it, I just couldn't keep my eyes open. What an incredibly intelligent man! Simple in ways but also so eccentric. Stuck behind his genius mind and in his own world! Living in a small town that he KNEW would NEVER accept him for who he was. So terribly sad and lonely. His written words are beautiful but yet shows the chaos in his own mind. What a beautiful, intense, bizarre and fascinating story!! Thank you!!!

I am loathe to write a negative review of anything from "Serial" and "This American life." Like everything Ira Glass does, this podcast is exceptionally produced. And like "Serial," this podcast possesses an ability to make the mundane same fascinating. Where this podcast really misses the mark, however, is in the story itself.
This frankly feels like a big city elitist's view of small-town America. It comes off as a study of rural ignorance, and makes no attempt to identify with most of those who are interviewed. The protagonist, an antihero of sorts, is likely a victim of bipolar disorder or depression at least. He starts out by accusing someone of murder, literally of murder, that turns out to be an unfounded accusation. By the end we learn that a self loathing homosexual man in Alabama, who (by choice) deals primarily with the poorest educated and least enlightened people in his town, is convinced that small town Alabama is uneducated and unenlightened.
As an hour long podcast subject that provides for an introspective look out our own biases, this could be very compelling to listen to. As a seven part series, it asks several questions, but never provides any answers. I cannot recommend this.

Yes yes yes.

This is an exploitative and anecdotal character study on a troubled man. Use of off the record material, personal relationships and accounts that he hadn't given consent to. I have no doubt this was in many ways a labor of love for Reed, but someone who wasn't too close should've stopped this. It's not journalism, it's not an investigation. It's invasive gossip.

Starts strong, but this podcast devolved into a salacious exploitation of a man battling depression and mental illness. I enjoyed listening to colorful characters and a treasure hunt... but by episode 6 it became something else. Exposing the darker recesses of the mind of a man who was unable to give his consent to the continuing story. This is a disturbing podcast not just because of the content, but also because of the salacious treatment of the private thoughts and activities of John B. I am saddened by the treatment of this poor man who has become a spectacle to gawk at in this podcast.

Exploitive. Invasive. Inconsistent.

The team who brought you Serial and This American Life are really proud of themselves for digging up and broadcasting the most intimate moments of a man's life without his consent. With no one to protect his legacy, a team of reporters create an inconsistent jumble of stories of the most shocking and secret parts of John B's life and mental illness. This didn't have to be done in this way. There was no redeeming journalistic value, it is all voyeurism. I'm really surprised and disappointed that no one stopped to ask if this was necessary, ethical or respectful.

This is a 7+ hr. biography of a closeted, bigoted, mentally ill man living in Alabama. I don't think this strange man was nearly as interesting as the host thinks he was, and I sort of resent listening all the way through. I learned a few things though; 1) the worst stereotypes about people from Alabama aren't unfounded, 2) clocks, and their repair and construction, do not interest me whatsoever, 3) I have so much respect for the producers of This American Life that I continued to listen to something I did not like just because they made it. I wanted to trust them to lead me somewhere magical, the same way they have done so many times. My advice is to listen to episodes 1 & 2. If you're interested still, good for you. If you're not feeling it by then, however, abandon ship. It will only get worst.

I usually don't leave reviews if I have nothing nice to say, but I feel cheated out of hours of my life so I made this exception. This is nothing like its promo. I listened to all seven episodes hoping that it would come full circle, but instead I am racking my brain for the actual point and purpose. My best guess is that Brian Reed wasted a year of his life on a story that wasn't actually there, and needed to make something out of it. Would have been much better if you would have at least called it what it was, a memoir of a friend or something on those lines.

Just. So. Tedious.

I hate to say it, but I just don't get why everyone loves this series so much. I really tried to get into it, and made it through 4.5 episodes. But I just kept wondering why I should care about this story. Very little about the story grabbed my attention or interest, and even when something had, it was quickly lost again with all the rambling nonsense. I feel like the description of the show was misleading.

Saw it through to the end. Mistake.

If you are looking for something that invades your mind and makes you question the world like season 1, move along. This podcast is not that at all. It's a nice little story about a troubled, smart, opinionated man in Alabama that people loved to hate, but they actually loved him, but he hated himself. I didn't pity him. I didn't root for him. I listened to all 7 episodes hoping for a return on my time investment. It ended and I still didn't care. I would have been happy to hear this story in a 20 min segment on This American Life. That's all it needs.

I've been listening to Ira Glass, Sarah Koenig, and even Brian Reed for years. I grew up on This American Life which is why I was surprised to be squirming in my seat by the end of the series. The story telling was on point, but the journalistic ethics became questionable at best. I felt complicit in the exploitation of the subject's deeply personal life details. This has left me disappointed with the This American Life/Serial teams.

I never write reviews, but I felt the need to here. Don't describe this as someone traveling to investigate a murder when that is such a small portion of this. I was looking forward to this Bc I respect and love the work of everyone involved but without spoilers I found this to be exploitive at best and extremely morally dubious. I don't believe every subject in this podcast was a fully willing participant in having their story told in this manner and I didn't find it was told with respect or any purpose other than stitching together a "suspenseful" narrative. I actually felt ashamed for having listened and thought it a terrible exploitation of someone who above all else was clearly struggling with severe depression. Throwing in some pithy observations about lovely moments does not redeem what is otherwise rubbernecking a terrible tragedy.

I wanted so badly to enjoy this podcast, but it lacked a focus and a clear line of purpose and meaning. There was a moment in the 6th episode that gave me hope, that all was not lost, and I hadn't just wasted enormous amounts of time listening to doldrum ranting from an angry southerner, but the story veered into another direction of listless jumble of nonsense. I felt like the producers were reaching for a story and nothing ever emerged, so they went ahead anyways because so much time and effort had already been wasted on the endeavor and not producing a story would've been wasteful. I had such high hopes for this podcast and I regretfully give it a bad review because it was just terrible. It was a sad story that leaves the listener with more questions than answers and an empty feeling inside. I wish I could get all of those hours of my life back.

I am a big fan of TAL and it was a huge fan of Serial's second season, so no one was more surprised than I was when S-town turned out to be a flop. Not to give away any plot points, but our intrepid reporter went down to Alabama expecting a big mystery, and got a big fat zero. Instead of giving up on the story that wasn't there, he instead reports on the banal and obvious. Apparently, there was a repressed, educated, and profound gay man in the South. Who suffered from some of the occupational hazards of his profession. Really? I'm shocked. Small-town life is secretive and conspiratorial? Really? Not at all shocking or terribly interesting, except in some incidental and prurient way. If it wasn't for the magic of TAL, someone would've pointed out along time ago that the emperor that is this story has no clothes. As big of a fan as I am, if it falls to me, so be it. Great production values as you might expect, but all in service of the zero-magic story.

Serial podcaster has outdone himself by taking on a subject he found himself with a personal attachment. This podcast took my places morally, imaginatively, and contemplatively that I never knew I would go. This podcast constantly surprised me around every turn and I'm not ashamed to say I broke into tears a few times. A complete waste of time.

Two episodes in, and all I hear is rednecks saying racist garbage, crying about bills, tattoos, and climate change. I'm out.

Uneventful. Weird. Deceiving. Just alright.

This is not a murder mystery at all. The intro was really deceiving. I would say it is much more similar to This American Life than Serial or Up and Vanished. It is a story following a man named John and his struggle to make a difference in a town that is so small yet has big problems that seem irreparable. These issues cause John a lot of depression and the story is a psychoanalysis of the people within this town, focusing mostly on how John copes with the thought of his whole life being spent there. I've only gotten through 2 episodes. It's not horrible, and I think for one episode of This American Life it would be a decent listen, I just can't see it holding my interest for a whole series.

I rarely go out of my way to write reviews but I felt like this particular story deserved it. S-Town had all the makings of superb story, not only did it hold my attention all the way through but it was the perfect mix of captivating, thrilling, and saddening. I binge watched all morning and into the afternoon at work and I felt it was more than time well spent.

Listen now, you will regret it if you don't

Listen, now. Seriously. Stop reading reviews and just listen! Tyler's Uncle Jimmy agrees with me.

I was so excited after hearing the preview. This gem dropped today, on my golden birthday, and what a gift! I've have binged my way through episode V already. Think Serial podcast, superimposed with a deep Southern flavor reminiscent of True Detective, that has evolved into a tribute to a man, who I would describe as a somewhat haunted version of Henry David Thoreau. So good!

Engaging and absorbing

On Chapter II already and am completely engrossed. Such an interesting portrait of this strange, surreal town and the mystery this podcast revolves around.

A wonderful, bingeable series that you can listen to without having to feel guilty about sitting on the couch for 8 hours watching the new season of Orange is the New Black.

Lifeblood to the podcast form!

Wow. Kudos to these Yankees (wink wink) for relating such a rich & layered story while staying true to the voices of these people. I live in a small southern town, and all of these "characters" immediately call up people I know, & have known all my life. I feel John's pain, in so many ways. Thanks for telling his story - long live public radio!!!! ❤rip John B

This is something Apple/iTunes shouldn't allow. Reviews and ratings for content that isn't even out yet is laughable and skews the ratings.

Of course this will be amazing

People leaving bad reviews thinking this is a rip off of another podcast are barking up the wrong tree. This is NPR and Ira Glass folks. They've been working on this for 3 years and it will obviously be original. I wish some people would not be so stupid, and would learn to know what they are talking about before they go spreading bs. But, I guess this is America in 2017 so... sigh*

Morons assume this is fake.

All the negative reviews are people who assume this is a fictional copy of Up and Vanished. If you read, this is a true story that they've worked on for years, long before U&V came out. It takes zero time to look up facts before you post stupid comments.
