The beginning of the story was strangely familiar, like the opening scene in a shopworn police procedural: A woman runs screaming down a street in Oak Beach, a secluded gated community on Long Island’s South Shore, only to vanish, it seems, into thin air. It was almost dawn on May 1, 2010. Hours earlier, Shannan Gilbert traveled from New Jersey to see a man who had hired her as an escort from a Craigslist ad. By the time the police arrived, she was gone. They talked to the neighbors, the john and her driver and came up with nothing. A few days later, they ordered a flyover of the area and, again, saw no sign of her. Then they essentially threw up their hands. She went into the ocean, they decided, either hysterical or on drugs.
None of this made the news, not at first. A missing sex worker rarely does. Not even when another woman advertising on Craigslist, Megan Waterman, was reported missing a month later.
This was, quite obviously, a serial-killer case. The only person not saying as much was the Suffolk County police commissioner, Richard Dormer. “I don’t want anyone to think we have a Jack the Ripper running around Suffolk County with blood dripping from a knife,” he said in a frenzied news conference. In fact, they had something almost exactly like that. All eyes were on the Suffolk Police now — wondering who killed these women, if they would ever find Gilbert and what it would take to solve the mystery.

Hey Barbaro…the 1948 episode was an improvement over your others on the topic. Maybe someday you will become a real journalist. That said there were unfortunately a couple of meaningful omissions:
1. The expulsions began in January 1948 and more than half of the 750,000 refugees cited were forced from their homes BEFORE Israel declared itself a state. This bolsters the surrounding countries’ contention that they were coming to the aid of their neighbors; not because of antisemitism as Israeli leaders and spokespeople as well as papers likes yours are prone to assert either explicitly or thru inference.
2. UN General assembly resolutions including 191 are proposals. They are not binding on local populations who understandably have the right to reject them.
3. A religious text (ie the Bible) is not only childish it’s irrelevant. After all, we are all 21st century beings and we’re not in Sunday school. What’s relevant is the fact that 90 percent of the 1947 Jewish population of Palestine had immigrated there “from Europe” in the preceding 30 years. Naturally the local population feared expulsion.
P.S. given how your guest referenced Benny Morris or how in the subsequent decade Jews migrated out of other middle eastern countries, perhaps you need to bring someone on who is familiar with the research and writings of Ilan Pape or Avi Shlaim respectively. Also, you may want to explore some day the question; what right did Great Britain (and Arthur Balfour) have to give somebody else’s homeland to yet a third entity?

I was a paid subscriber to the times until three weeks ago. The way they are covering the current ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is so disturbing. The bias and effort to make us complicit with this genocide is something I will never forget. I will not be listening to “news” that tries to diminish the loss of non white life or tries to justify war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Quickly losing credibility. As a former academic, it pains me to hear the justifications for war and apartheid pedaled on this show through obvious bias and racist tropes. From Latin America to the MidEast. Especially after all the legal trouble this programming has faced, producers continue to program work that will face future litigation.

Absolutely disgusted and disturbed at the lack of journalistic integrity of this podcast. Especially, the 1948 episode. How dare you not invite a Palestinian who has actually experienced firsthand the ethnic cleansing of 1948 and only show the side of the oppressor and war criminals. I used to love this podcast but now see the complete lack of integrity. How dare you invite the OPPRESSOR to speak for the oppressed? Disgusting.

After listening to your most recent coverage of the “history” of the Israel/Palestine conflict it was very clear that your reporting was heavily skewed to the Israeli perspective. To imply that Israel is not a colonial project is incredibly inaccurate and disingenuous. The founders of the Zionist movement admitted this at the time. The Israeli government is not a victim. This is a factually disputable and despicable attempt to paint a “both sides” narrative that does not exist between the occupier and the occupied. Shame on you.

Excellent Podcast today. One thing stands out to me is that Yes, both sides are victims and perpetrators of bad moves in the forming of the state of Israel. These old narratives MUST be corrected if there is any possibility of a resolution. Discussing the actual history should Not be considered antisemitism as Facts are being exposed. i think the World would be happy to see a homeland state for Both the Israelis and the Palestinians. However, they cannot be the ones to develop borders, as Both sides have been entrenched in their own history. Arbitration by an independent coalition is the only chance, but there must be an agreement to Accept the findings of said arbitration in borders of each state. This will Never happen unfortunately.

Very important points Shipler left out:
1. The Jewish people are indigenous to the Middle East and Israel. We’re Europeans or Americans, etc., today only because of the constant Babylonian, Persian, Roman conquests, expulsions and pogroms of the lands known biblically as Judea, Samaria and Israel since 586 BCE.
2. 1948 ALSO SAW expulsions, massacres and pogroms of the indigenous Jews of the Middle East. About 800,000 Mizrahi Jews (Eastern Jews) had to flee, having their property stolen, many lives lost, etc. Most had been living in those countries (Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya) for thousands of years - long before there was ever a Mohammed or Islam. Important facts that he left out.

I am a casual listener, a stay at home mom just looking to keep my mind awake and hear about compelling things happening in our world today. Having said that, I’ve tried two different episodes.
The first was about the automotive strike. It seemed this reporter had no idea what she was doing. There were long pauses, the same points were repeated over and over and the questions she asked of the reporter on the phone were, at times, just stupid. As a consumer of automobiles (which most of us are) I wanted to know how this ground-breaking strike deal would affect me. That question was never asked. It seemed like a pretty important angle to leave out of a story.
The second episode I listened to had a reporter whose cadence was so slow and irritating that it detracted from the story itself. He would say three words, pause, three more words, etc. This story also seemed to belabor the same points over and over. There were long pauses when switching between reporters. Additionally, there was a “we’ll be right back” which had about 30 seconds of dead air.
It seems there is not enough meat in either of these stories to take up the allotted time. Or perhaps more accurately, the reporting is just bad.

It is striking how the Republican Party has turned into an arm of violence similar to the Mexican cartel. Trump & MAGA supporters threaten journalists as being the “enemy of the people”, openly express death threats to moderate Republicans who will not vote for their alt-right house speaker, and dishonestly spread lies about stolen election, voter suppression, and democratic deception… All in the pursuit of Republicans’ lust to get raw power.

I enjoy this podcast overall but I have been very disappointed with your coverage of this event. I had hoped the Times could be more thorough in terms of your coverage of why it has come to this and why Israel has responded as it has. I want to hear the scope of both sides. The way you speak about this event gives off the sense of big, bad Israel and poor Gaza. I would like you to communicate a deeper understanding of both sides.

Especially Sabrina. It’s scripted like dumbed down educational materials. You can see every move to set it up. Sabrina asks a question, guest answers, Sabrina simplifies/paraphrases so that listeners can hope to understand all these complicated concepts we need her brilliance to unpack.
I also hate the line, “Here’s what else you need to know today” as if we are idiots who just want to be fed exactly what information the producers of the podcast deem necessary for us to know.
My critique is not political. The structure and vibe of this show just acts like we are preschoolers.

Shockingly bad journalism during war-times

Journalism is the fourth pillar of a democracy, holding truth to power.
NYT‘s journalistic coverage of the Israel-Palestine war has done everything but…
United Nation Human Rights Watch has counted 9600 civilian deaths in the war in Ukraine since 2022. The NYT has done formidable ground reporting for over a year and called out both parties when horrific human rights abuses have been committed.
10 days into the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, the same organization estimated 4200 civilian deaths in Gaza and we are far beyond those numbers now.
Yet, the NYT has stalled or not reporting on all of the US‘s security council vetoes on a ceasefire, barely mentions the uptick in raids and killings in the West Bank since Oct. 7th, and meticulously adds a ‚Hamas-run‘ in every death toll update to de-legitimize the atrocities at hand.
Clearly the NYT has chosen to report with an angle. It’s disheartening to see that it has not chosen the angle that holds truth to power, instead it opted to hold power over truth.

I used to get my news here but I dont think i will be listening anymore after seeing how biased the reporting of the Palestinian genocide has been. It is so irresponsible to continue reporting this as a "conflict". Please wake up to your responsibility as journalists to report the truth and stop parroting US talking points- the rest of the international community sees this for what it is.

I’m not a Jew. I’m an American. I can’t even comprehend how this is the number 1 podcast on iTunes right now. I’m in my mid 40’s and in complete astonishment that we are here in this moment with so many people hating Jews.
The most recent episode I just listened to is pure Jew hatred. I’m not even sure how we got here so fast. Terrorists just killed thousands of Jews and kidnapped hundreds including Americans. Yet we have these appalling protest for Hamas everywhere around the globe.
It’s so weird people ask for sympathy for terrorists yet this podcast exists and is number 1 on my list.
The NYT is a disgrace to humanity as it was during WW2 as they downplayed the killing of millions of people.
It seems to me there are a very small but vocal bunch of people that promote hate, division, and even death.
These people are weak and can’t defend their positions in any debate so they use force.
They want to take everything they can from successful and happy people because in the end they are either resentful losers or fanatical religious zealots. The same can be said by politicians on both sides in the USA sadly.
How do we fix this? I have no idea.
I’m not religious in any sense but all I hear in this podcast is pure evil. The NYT clearly sympathizes with Hamas and Hamas clearly state they love death. They tell it to you, to your face. Everyone should listen to what they say and wake up before it is too late.
Their evil is here. It’s not such a small world after all.

In the most recent episode of your podcast “Israeli Troops Enter Gaza” your reporter claims there are 8000 deaths in Gaza. Does the NYT care about facts anymore? Those numbers are put out by Hamas. Our own president (a democrat) has stated his disbelief in anything reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health AKA Hamas. Why not mention those number are not verifiable? Why doesn’t your biased reporter talk about the near-constant bombardment of rockets from Hamas over to Israel? How do the Israelis feel? Hamas started the war, what did they expect? Why not call out the Arab nations especially Egypt who want nothing to do with the Palestinians? Why is the criticism solely directed at Israel? Where is the full story? Pathetic excuse of a podcast attempting to rile the antisemites up further. If the NYT goal is to court a faction of readers and listeners who lack critical thinking skills then you are well on your way. Bravo. The bias is astounding and will forever stain your newspaper, one I used to hold in the highest regard. Do better.

Hard to listen to TD’s coverage of Gaza

 –
with all due respect
 –
2023-10-30
There are countless innocent people suffering in Gaza. Your coverage lacks context that borders on callousness. TD can do two things at once: the innocent suffering in Gaza should be covered and the culpability of Hamas. Please cover the IDF ground invasion but don’t neglect the context of how this started with the mass murder, torture, and rape of innocent Israeli civilians-and that hundreds of hostages are still being held by Hamas-and that Hamas does not distinguish themselves from civilians-and that Hamas fights from urban areas making civilians vulnerable. You can do this TD! Please show the NYT has learned from that irresponsible and misleading coverage of the hospital strike. Do better!

I don’t know why you’re putting out these long form stories with actors telling the perspectives from cartel members from three years ago… when you could’ve published it at the time. And now it feels performative. Especially when there are much more pressing stories facing our world every day. Plus the overproduced soundtrack and the actors playing dramatic parts irrelevant to news stories feels glib and disingenuous.

I’ve been a listener since day one of this show. I always thought the reporting to be impartial, and accurate. I want to be clear I’m an American citizen born in New York who lives in Texas now. I have no special connection to Ukraine or Palestine whatsoever but it has really struck me how much less coverage the people in Gaza are getting. American citizens are not blind, we have seen the videos of children being bombed. We do not care anymore what happened to Israel on Oct 7th. Please stop reporting it. We care about the genocide that is happening in Gaza. I am a NYT subscriber and I’m so beyond disappointed at NYT over this. I really do want to believe The Daily could do better. Had to laugh at the recent show speaking about the deficit— liberals historically do not care about the immense USA deficit. This episode’s journalist shows some concern which is at least a step in the right direction for a liberal newscast. Definitely “last in the room” to show concern — but good to see they at least present the topic seriously in this episode.
I do like this show albeit the liberal bias— I appreciate the calm manner in which the journalists speak about a subject (very rare in politics and especially spoken media). I also appreciate the Q/A format. If a person listens to this show, they will come away with some basic knowledge and not just biased statements.

I always knew this show leaned one way but listened anyway bc you have to listen to “both sides” to draw your own conclusions.
But not reporting AT ALL on the genocide in Palestine against 2000+ children is really disgusting. All we hear about is Hamas, Hamas, Hamas. What about the thousands of babies being charred to death DAILY? Whole family lines being wiped out by the second? the silence is very telling.
And this is MORE than just the ISRAEL/HAMAS war. If you don’t know your history, then educate yourself. This is a war 75 years in the making.
