I originally didn't think much about law, but this podcast really opened my eyes to the beautiful complexities of law.
However two coursera certificates later, I am officially obsessed with law.
My only complaint is that it takes a year for them make new episodes.

I've never been especially interested in law, government, politics, etc...criminal (in)justice is a topic i find mildly entertaining ( law prof David Harris' podcast by the same name is the only other podcast i listen to and recommend under this umbrella of topics) However, even though this one is very specifically about the supreme court and its cases, its more about the absurdity of our court and legal system, the undeniably, unavoidably subjective interpretations of the law, and the ways in which we flawed, imperfect humans attempt to improve this system. these are human stories, not court stories.

I'm a recent college grad with a major in Political Science, and my senior course focusing on the Supreme Court is something I miss daily. The institution and it's authority is really the most fascinating sect of our American political process and this podcast exemplifies all of it's awesome intrecacies. I have exhausted these episodes- multiple times at this point- and find them just as exciting every single time I listen. It's impossible to not feel emotional about the content, when it's so real and so recent. I am aching for an re-launch of this podcast, especially as so many new, captivating, and vital cases pass through today's court and with the appointment of a brand new, lifetime, justice- Neil Goursich. Great job WNYC.

This was an excellent show. Thoughtful, Intelligent, thought-provoking, disturbing. It focused on difficult decisions and articulate argument. Then the producers decided the show would be better served by badly done funny voices, endless pointless sound effects and an overwhelming choice of cute over content. It was a bad choice. You had a good show. Please bring it back.

Very well-produced but way oversimplified, dumbed-down, and somewhat biased (though they don’t seem to be conscious of this).
Also has the trademark 'NPR whimsy’, if that’s your thing (not mine).
When the reporter brought up Felix Frankfurter, the co-host said, “His name was really FRANKFURTER!?" This gives you a pretty good idea of what you’re dealing with here. (Actually pretty offensive, especially coming from these PC types.)
Love Supreme Court stuff though… so any news is better than none.

Good stories, over produced

 –
Daily Podcaster

The stories are fun and interesting but the production is over the top. Radio lab should sometimes let the characters speak for themselves and not cut it up and talk over them. Also too many snippet sounds that are so unnecessary and take time and take away from the story rather adding to it.

What more could you want?

These stories are impeccably crafted in the same style we all love from years of RadioLab. Insightful tales of the most under appreciated branch of our government; intelligent legal analysis folded in with heart warming (sometimes wrenching) personal narratives.
Although, there is one big flaw: they call this a "mini-series". Please don't go away!!

I'm so bummed that this is only going to be a miniseries. The geniuses at RadioLab have done it again- content is great, and examines topics that haven't already been covered ad nauseum. This is SUCH a smart, entertaining, educational, and relevant podcast (which, I'm guessing was the point, but still). RadioLab has always been exceptional at breaking down legal cases and giving new life to them, telling the stories in an even more compelling way. If the first two episodes of this are any indication of what's in store, I can't wait to hear all the new stories we'll hear and the perfect audial blend in which they'll be delivered. The opening theme alone gives me chills!

I'm really interested in the Supreme Court so was excited about this new podcast, but I find the Radiolab editing style, with all the tiny snippets mashed together, totally disruptive. That takes it down to two stars. Bummer!

Biased much?

 –
clancy13

2016-06-08
Well produced but extremely biased. This review is based upon only the first episode as this is the only one released as of now. The first episode should have been titled "abolish the death penalty" The entire 40 minutes focused almost solely on the efforts and moral justifications of abolishing the death penalty. Of course every non-fiction has an element of bias but this was to an extreme. "His little broom closet of Death" "do you pray for the victim?" (I didn't know convicted murderers were referred to as victims) Multiple factual inaccuracies as well. Referring to DreamPharma as a one man operation responsible for all of the drugs shortly after saying that companies across 3 different countries were responsible. Referring to saline as a drug. It is not a drug.
I was looking forward to this podcast as an unbiased explanation of the effects of Supreme Court rulings and opinions. This first episode has shown that this podcast will not provide that.

First episode was great!

Despite the fact that the show is billed as a look at the Supreme Court, and said court only made brief cameo's in the first episode, this show was great. If you like Radiolab, you'll like this show. It had many important details that I did not know and significantly impacts the way I look at the issue, some amazing tape, great production (music by Q2's Alexander Overington!), and good humor.
