Description

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

This movie is great, and fun. I love this movie a lot. I love all of the characters in this movie. I love Chris Hemsworth in this movie. I love the big, huge whale in this movie. It is one of my all time favorite movies ever.

This movie had so much potential, but they ruined it by picking a horrible actor to play the main character. His accent is dreadful -- it's constantly changing from him trying to sound old-New Englander to his natural modern day voice. The result is that you can't stay engaged. You keep coming out of the movie.

This movie is absolutely perfect. I have watched it about four or five times and it still has the same old interest for me. I think this was so much better, compared to Ron Howard's other movies.

I really liked this movie. The acting was great and the action was gripping. I had read the book prior to seeing the movie which usually results in the movie being a disappointment, but not in this case. Very entertaining.

Very underrated movie.

Take a great story, Moby Dick, and turn it into a lost at sea survival story? No suspense, or interesting characters. Even the costumes and cinematography are boring. No real message, moral, or inspirations are to be found in this shipwreck of a film.

In the heart of boring

When watching this movie, I was amazed that Ron Howard directed it, because the editing, directing, and cinematography were all terrible. The characters were one dimensional to put it nicely and I was not invested at all in the story. Not worth your hard-earned money.

The movie was NOT, i repeat, NOT a retelling of book Moby Dick. It was the story told of how Moby Dick came to be. Why there are so many comments about how it didn’t cover the story of Moby Dick correctly is absurd. He even says at the end it would be a work of fiction based on true events. Sometimes, reality is not what is written in books. I thought it was great. It dragged in some places, but so does reality. Some people, I just can’t figure out that they would compare this to the book.

Not sure why there's so many terrible reviews. I thought it was a very good movie... Not great, but very good. I confess, I've never read Moby Dick, but after watching the movie, I put the book as my next "purchase" on Amazon. One negative I will say though... I thought Hemsworth's accent was TERRIBLE!! I couldn't figure out for the life of me which country he was from. His accent changed each and every scene. One scene, he sounds American... Next, he sounds like he has some British in his accent... Next, he sounds Australian. I'm not sure why people haven't been discussing this so much. I've read only 3 reviews on here which mentioned it. Other than that, LOVED the movie.
And by the way, I am a HUGE fan of Chris Hemsworth (or is it Liam? Lol I never remember. Whomever Thor is ha). This is the only film I didn't like of his. Rush, in my opinion, was his finest performance.

What a bunch of Whiners!

Rented the movie yesterday without reading the book. Came away from the movie feeling like I had seen a pretty good flick. Didn’t know if this was a true story or a yarn so I googled it and found out it was a true story. In fact I read the story as told by the first mate in his book printed in 1821. It’s a short book and can be read online. They did embellish the story a bit from the true account, but about 90% correct.
My only regret now is that I didn’t watch it a second time before it expired. Definitely a rental movie and possibly a keeper. Just asked the wife if she could rate it between 1 & 5 stars and she said 4 and I told her about the bad rating on RT and she said forget those people.
Watch it and enjoy it for what it is and don’t try and nit pic it to death.

Much better than the critics said

Not in the same league as John Hustons brilliant Moby Dick. But that is probably an unfair comparison. This is the story of the true incident which inspired Melville to write his timeless novel. The film is beautifully shot and such actors as Brendon Gleeson and Cillian Murphy help it,but Chris Hemsworth is way out of his depth so to speak.

I think most people don't realize that this is not trying to remake the book. It's not even the actual story.
We loved it. Definitely a great movie! Great acting, drama, sense of urgency for survival (as another review put it). It's a great movie.

I was enthralled by the scope of this epic although It was hard to watch the suffering of these wonderful beasts and the plight of the fools who were exploiting them. What a great lesson for our species regarding the responsibility we bear for our knowledge, power and dominion. I thought it was well done and thought provoking.

First I was disappointed that this wasn't a realistic portrayal including leaving out details of the nature of the Essex (which was all important for perspective) by showing the size but not explaining to the audience that it was a smaller ship re-fitted for whaling. I was also disappointed that the continuing theme of a vengeful whale going after the crew. People might like action these days but in truth the story as haunting as it is of the survivors is enough drama within itself.
With all of that said although many things were not explained this movie offers a well rounded tale giving people a glimpse of the reality of disasters at sea during those periods delivering a full story which is very different from the Moby dick yarn and more true to life. Because of this I'm going with four stars with one star off for the lack of presenting the facts to the audience and the whale chase destroying the complete historical educational value of the film.

This movie was great. Definitely NOT a misfire for Ron Howard. Unfortunate many people in todays fast pace, low attention span generation had no appreciation for the film. It took my wife and I over three-hours to watch, as our child is sick, thus we paused the film a few times to take care of him. Even though we had breaks throughout, it kept out attention span.

Excellent!

This movie is fascinating to me. As I started to watch it I had to pause and research some history on whaling. This movie hits a philosophical and moral nerve between man and beast. It challenges our place within nature and whether one can be humbled at all by it. This is such an adventurous story and the imagery is awe-inspiring. I loved it!

I don’t understand the negative reviews I have read - this is a very well done rendition of Moby Dick. I very much enjoyed this movie. I think Ron Howard did a very good job. The historical value and the fictional tale mix very well.

How such a riveting book can turn into such a colossally boring movie is a total mystery! I couldn’t put the book down, yet the movie was so dull, I was uninterested within a half hour. Too bad. It’s a great story.

it just didn’t pull me in. As a RH fan I have to sadly admit that this was indeed boring. with 50 mins left I finally just gave up and went and dug up a copy of the book and am now on my way to being an avid reader again. So that’s a good end result IMHO.

This is a misfire for Ron Howard. It’s unclear what he was going for here. The movie is 2 hours long and the big encounter with the whale happens at the half way point. That means there is almost 1 hour leading up and another hour after the big scene. One spends the second half of the movie waiting for a bigger climax and resolution, but it never arrives. The movie can’t make up its mind between being a drama about the telling of the whale tale to Herman Melville, or being an action movie about the actual whale tale. It does neither well.
The cinematography is also a bit off. They decided to go with a yellow / faded out look throughout the whole movie but I found it too distracting and felt it took some of the majesty away from some of the big scenes.
This is a movie that tried to go big, but ended up feeling very small and unfocused.

Lacks the drama and spirit of the book.

Totally lacks the drama, spirit, urgency, and sense of survival that made the book a compelling read. Totally skips the time spent on various islands trying to survive. That would have been a dramatic third act. Instead it doesn’t know where to go and is rudderless like the lifeboats up on screen. Secondly, why would you have water splashing on the camera lens in the 1800’s? Just to copy the visual style of “Children Of Men?” It makes no sense in this context and is a silly, ridiculous distraction that pulls you out of the movie every time it happens. Effects are not up to par. The sharks look like they are out of a video game, especially in the first opening establishing shot. And of course they are all Great Whites. They should have taken the effects budget and used it on dialogue coaches for the main cast, whose accents go in and out. Some days they sound like Americans in the modern era and on others they are seafaring, old timey sailors from Nantucket. All in all, a disappointing adaptation. Usually Ron Howard is terrific!

Well done.

Nothing replaces a good book, in my opinion, but this excellent movie gives real flavor to an intense experience that is hard to grasp solely with words. The sounds and sights are appropriately terrifying, and the plot line reminds us that politics is not a recent phenomenon.
The highest compliment is that it made me want to read Melville again.

Better than expected.

I was excited to see this, but after watching it I’m pretty disappointed. I expected a lot more from a Ron Howard film..I’m a huge fan of most of his films. I thought this particular movie was poorly written and poorly directed…it felt very rushed. The cinematography seemed geared more towards complementing a 3D movie than a 2D movie, making the picture look disjointed and disorienting in its 2D form. There was so much potential here, but it completely misses the mark for me. I regret paying for it.

As a hunter and a fisherman I can say that this movie captured the intensity from both sides of the hunt. You get amazing FPS views of everything in action, from the whale diving, the harpoons, ropes, etc. The concept of hunting a heard of whales was fully captured. I very much enjoyed it and thought it was one of the more better movies this year.

Great performances, fantastic experience, it makes you feel like you're there at sea. The whale scenes are intense and tge drama is heartbreaking seeing what these men went through. I liked the man vs nature and man vs man aspects. Could have been better with character development though
