Description

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to "leave no one behind." But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

Definitely a horrible movie. To brainwash any American ever instead of bettering themselves they teach themselves to steal resources and brag about destroying lives. Very disappointing movie coming from Clint Eastwood.

Sorry I couldn't stomach another review that called this movie "boring." For you idiots who came to see this movie expecting a mindless action flick like "Fast & Furious" or even another Marvel movie then this movie isn't for you. You actually have to have a heart while watching this movie! I found this movie to be storytelling at it's best! The "characters" are based off of REAL people! For you morons who just can't seem to engage your brains while watching a movie...MOVE on and let the rest of us who who maintain a little intelligence ALONE!

Ready. Aim. Review! The true story of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) comes to life in the almost-true-to-life film adaptation of his completely-true-to-life memoirs of the same name. We open with the Islamic call to prayer playing over the logos and establishing shots of troops in Iraq, followed by Chris aiming at a woman and child who bring out an rocket powered grenade and we are left in suspense as to what happens, because it’s time to see how he got there. We go all the way back to when he was a kid, which shows how his character is formed, then we meet him as a cowboy who rides a bucking bull in a rodeo on weekends, after which, he walks in on his girlfriend cheating on him, kicks her out, and eventually enlists in the Navy Seals after discussing the 1998 US embassy bombings. He undergoes BUDS, the Navy Seal training program for those who have not read the book (spoiler alert: I did), and one night at a bar, he meets Taya (Sienna Miller), holds her hair as she barfs after they bond, and eventually date each other before marrying. After seeing the 9/11 attacks on TV, he is sent to Iraq when they invade. Before I continue, I just want to say they skim over quite a bit of detail, such as a medical issue that almost kept him out, his college experience, his ranch job, etc. I highly recommend checking out the book for more on that, because it also gives a more insightful look into Taya’s thoughts during the four tours, because she actually contributed to the book. They also left out him getting pulled over when called into action on 9/11, and getting an escort instead of a ticket when he explains the situation. That aside, they do a great job of adapting the actual story, and while I won’t say either the book or this movie provide a perfect look at what life as a Navy Seal is like, let me put it this way: this movie does a great job visualizing it and showing what kind of hell a warzone is, and the book captures the psychological aspect better. The first tour takes us back to where we started: Chris trying to decide if he should snipe a woman and child with an explosive, and in a suspenseful scene such as that, he does what he has to, and what follows is a rotation between his tours and stateside scenes that follows him literally to the day he dies. Throughout this story, Chris is the only real developed or relatable character here, and everyone else is simply part of his tours and post-discharge life, whether it be his family or brothers-in-arms, and they do exactly what they need to do, and nothing more. This is his story. What did you expect, perfect development of every character? Ok, anyone who has lived through similar situations will likely relate to them, while outsiders may feel instant sympathy because of the intensity of it, and because this really happened. Chris Kyle is the center of our attention, and Clint Eastwood keeps it that way. Despite all this, I have to penalize the plot for one slightly minor error: Chris’ beard while deployed. It was distracting throughout because last I checked, active soldiers aren’t allowed to have beards, and I double checked when I finished watching, and can say they did make a plot foul in this case, and even if it weren’t the case, I searched for actual pictures of Chris Kyle when he was active, and he clearly does not have facial hair. For his active duty scenes, I really don’t know what they were thinking, but this movie still did a lot right, so I won’t dwell on it. Regulation violating beards aside, the action is captured brilliantly, and they don’t hold back on how grotesque and violent war is. To quote General Sherman “War is hell,” and Clint Eastwood, along with Tom Stern as cinematographer, bring that hell to life in a truly believable manner. I’ve never been in combat, so I have no right to comment on accuracy of that kind of imagery. Everything from the general scenarios (especially the kid some of the Iraqis kill with a drill) to the realistic touches of blood in the combat scenes contribute to the realism of the imagery, and every scene advances the story of Chris Kyle’s life story. The soundtrack also contributes to the suspense of Chris lining up his shot, and sits out the more intimate scenes and one of the larger action pieces to bring focus to what’s going on. We also get a sense of a Navy Seal’s sense of humor through the soldier-to-soldier banter that humanize Chris and his brothers-in-arms, some of which is definitely not suited to younger audiences, but I will not penalize it, because it brings a sense of realism. Overall, American Sniper hits most of its targets, with a major foul-up in historical accuracy and military regulation accuracy, but is still worth watching to see the reenactment of the real life heroics of Chris Kyle, a true American Hero.

The film is difficult to evaluate. On one hand it treats of a man that represents a lot of America's problems with war and egocentrism, and on the other hand it gives an inside picture of an American war hero doubts and fights on a day to day basis. Finally Clint Eastwood is again mastering the direction of it.

American Sniper tries to turn the honest autobiographical story of Chris Kyle's life and exploits in Iraq into turning Chris into a John Wayne-type larger-than-life American bringer-of-justice who has superhuman talent, and it shows. Before shooting this movie, when Hollywood was still barganing with the Kyle family over movie rights, Chris Kyle's father told Clint Eastwood that if he made his son look like anything less than a superhero, he'd sue him. That fact REALLY shows throughout the film. Here's my problems after being in Iraq (Army-three times) and reading the book;
1. Chris' history prior to joining the Navy. Chris tried to join the Marine Corps first, but was refused because of pins in his arm from bull riding. Chris joined at 24, not 30, like the movie portrays. If Chris joined at 30, he would have never been in Ramadi (get your facts right, Hollywood). Chris didn't join because of an embassy attack, he joined because work, school and rodeos weren't working out anymore, and he always wanted to be in the military.
2. The portrayl of Petty Officer Kyle in Iraq. Chris NEVER shot a kid in Iraq, He DID however, shoot a young mother who had a toddler in one hand and a grenade in the other. Chris did target a boy who was going to pick up a Chinese-made RPG-7, but never pulled the trigger. The kid-shooting scene was a Hollywood invention to build up tension. Chris, like every other serviceman there, would have NEVER used a sattelite phone outside the FOB, knowing that would positively get you shot. I also had a problem with the portrayl of Biggles dying shortly after getting wounded. The real Biggles survived long after his final Iraq deployment, going so far as to climb Mount Rainier & Mount Hood. He died years down the line from complications due to facial reconstructive surgery, not from the shraplel, as the film portrays.
3. The portrayl of the Iraqis. The mission in Operation Iraqi Freedom was clear-Stabilize the Iraqi Insurgency, counter AQI operations & protect the Iraqi people. The Iraqi people I met (an I met a LOT, speaking from the heart here), were warm, friendly and hospitible, which was sometimes, sadly, at a fault. They were fiercely patriotic to their national identity and proud of their history that goes all the way back to Babylon (and possibly the Garden of Eden, if you're religious). There were Iraqis there trying to kill us, true, LOTS of them, but those guys were usually ex-Ba'athists, criminals or religious extremists.
This movie portrayed most Iraqis them as bungling soulless animals who were violent and extremist by nature. Chris refers to them as "animals" (in the book, too-sigh-), and portrays them as little more than pop-up targets. Also, the character of Mustafa never existed, as it's pretty obvious that he was the legend of Juba, the fictional Baghdad Sniper brought to life on film.
4. The portrayl of Chris Kyle & his wife. Chris' wife was not the granite bullwark of a spouse the movie portrayed her to be. In reality, she contemplated leaving him (I saw that happen alot to the married guys, lot of stress there), something that caused him to leave the Navy. Plus, the movie dosen't mention his three gunshot wounds, two helicopter crashes, six IED attacks, multiple surgeries and severely downplays his PTSD, something I found very disrespectful.
Finally, I was offended on how Chris Kyle himself was portrayed. Chris, from the book and multiple interviews on TV, seemed to be a really chilled-out friendly dude who would buy you a case of beer and bring you to the shooting range, telling you great stories the whole time. The movie portrayed him as a bulletproof cold-hearted arbiter of justice, basically Dirty Harry with an M24.
I hope another movie is done of him demystifying him and portraying him as he was, not what a Hollywood trope states he should be. This was done with Steve Jobs, why not show Chris, warts and all? I feel that if Chris was still alive and saw this movie, he would be the first and loudest to speak against it. As Iraq veterans, we deserve better than this. Ugh.
P.S.-I posted this same review two days after the movie was released on this site, and within ten days it was the #2 review. three days later, iTunes removed it. Nice to know someone out there hates dissenting opinions so much, they're willing to use censorship and subterfuge to remove them. Enjoy the freedom guys like us provided you, dunce.

Thank you Chris Kyle

I saw this in theaters and fell asleep about 30 minutes from the end. Monotonous plot - war, home, war, home, war, home, ect. If you are from the bible belt, this is a 5 star masterpiece showing liberals who the real heroes are. If you are anyone else, it’s somewhat entertaining but certainly doesn’t live up to the hype; leaves something to be desired.

This movie finally succeeded where "Hurt Locker" failed at portraying the truth about us trying to keep our minds focused on being with our family, friends, and significant others when we where back home. It showed the blank stare into the TV that wasn't on, the watching the mirrors for the cars behind us, the gas station, and it showed the rage when the dogs get too rough with the kids. When you feel like this, the only place to go is back to Baghdad where "things make sense." It showed the exhaustion downrange, the dirty tactics of the enemy, the drill bit in the ear. It showed the "eating soup with a knife" This my movie for my 48 months in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. I couldn't finish it the first time. I had to leave the theater along with other Vets that have seen too much. I'm going to try it again and maybe it will be easier.

Eastwood's heavy handed storytelling and blatant bias, ruin what could've been a truly compelling film. Instead, what's left here is a far less riveting (and more poorly constructed) retelling of Hurt Locker. But instead of diving into the bevy of inner demons and distress combat soldiers such as Kyle must contend with, this movie turns to clichéd combat sequences and flag waving to promote an agenda.

However skilled and patriotic Chris Kyle may have been, he was wrong and the American invasion of Iraq illegal and immoral. Without a self-conscious examination of those truths, the movie is hollow and misguided flag waving. The tragedy of Mr. Kyle’s end is unsurprising in the larger context of America’s crime. What comes around goes around. Just because what a person thinks he’s doing is right does not absolve him of his actual wrongdoing.

If you actually think, then this movie is highly biased, racist, and full of hypocrisy. It embraces every stereotype that america is know for and then some. There have been many highly praised snipers throughout history and this one got a movie because its main character is a “good ol' boy from Texas” and its audience is easy pick-ins.

See a lot of reviews weighted towards politics on here. On the production and acting merits, too-notch film. It's grueling and difficult at time, but it makes both the pro anti-war arguments quite well in the same movie. Amazing acting by Cooper and Eastwood directing is as excellent as expected. It's not a fun ride though, so be ready for an emotional ride that is more akin to reality.

I love Eastwood movies, always different, always cool. But this time it's not that. This is a clunky, badly edited film. Every scene felt rushed, heavy-handed or boring. The worst fake baby ever, and that counts Trainspotting. People will say I'm un-American for this, but it's not about that. This is about bad filmmaking. Bradley Cooper was corny and overbearing, as was everyone else, but since we look at him the most- he's worse. No scene helped the next or previous. They just tried to make Kyle look like a hero, he wasn't. He wasn't a baby killer either. He was an ego-manic with anger issues, making Americans look like red necks. If you want a good Iraq/Afghanistan war movie, watch The Hurt Locker.

It's a well rounded and excellently directed movie about Chris Kyle. I saw no evidence that this movie tries to push an agenda. What the movie does show Kyle's patriotism, without glorifying war. To elaborate on this, Chris Kyle had a black and white outlook on the war but as the movie progresses the viewer is shown that things are more nuanced than that.
I was also shocked and saddened when I watched the extras and found out that Kyle was murdered during production of this movie. I knew that he was murdered but not during actual production.
It's a 2 hour long movie, but I wanted more at the end.

Cooper is a great actor. However, the movie fails on several sides: The combat scenes are boring, the Iraqi fighters are shown as incompetent enemies running into the open fire wherever possible. Eastwood tries to make sure to communicate that there were no innocent Iraqis by having children with grenades running towards a group of Marines on the open street… A regular sniper suddenly becomes some kind of Sherlock Holmes or CIA agent doing all that kind of intelligence work himself. The Seals are driving through Baghdad as if it is the streets of San Francisco. Rambo 3 was more convincing! The political message is about on Rambo 3 niveau as well. I would have loved to see more real Chris Kyle action here and not just some dude who hangs out on rooftops guarded by a marine leaning and relaxing next to him and casually shooting kids, women and old men...
Eastwood is embarrassing with this movie, nowhere near to what he has done before.

I'd like to precaution families with their loved ones deployed or a post war veteran doesn't watch this. It's very surreal and will cause traumatic flashbacks! If your loved one is deployed it will make your nerves fly!
On the other note it's a very eye opening story and absolutely great tribute to a American war hero.
I'd like to end by saying a thank you to our troops, veterans, and our brothers&sisters in arms who didn't come home. Your serving means so much to a Korean War veterans great granddaughter who would be so privileged in life if it wouldn't be for your selfless act to defend me!

Having seen the film last night (in conjunction with currently reading his book), I’m overall moved and impressed with the life of Chris Kyle; a unique life that wasn’t adequately conveyed/displayed in this film. It’s a life that was built on values, military discipline, camaraderie, and spirited resolve. There was an effort to exemplify these qualities in him, but again, the film fell short in showing the audience what was ‘meant' to be expressed.
In general (and with my personal knowledge as a Marine Corps combat veteran), the scenes of combat were relatively accurate and without embellishment, although most of the scenes were rushed and incomplete with context and fulfillment, and more emphasis should of been placed on his life prior, during, and after military (deployment(s) life.
Semper Fidelis!

A Difficult but Good Movie

Going into this movie I had mixed emotions. I served 4 years on active duty in the Navy, and I’m now in college with many international students. The more and more I’m exposed to other cultures, the more I find myself becoming increasingly frustrated by American ethnocentrism. I still think America is the greatest country in the world, but I think it would do Americans good to become a little more humble on the world’s stage.
So, having this mindset, I went into this movie unsure of what to expect. This movie blew me away though. I walked out of the theater just overwhelmed with emotions. This movie gives you an excellent picture of what real war is like. There’s no glossing it over to make it look better than it is. You see all the blood and all the pain…you genuinely feel for the characters. But it also doesn’t make you feel like war shouldn’t happen…you’re left feeling like, even though it is extremely hard, it is necessary at times.
I will admit that the way the sailors and marines talk is hard to hear at times. I’ve spent time in N. Africa working with Muslims and I saw a side to them that I never knew existed when I was growing up. They are a loving and hospitable people. They, however, do have their radicals who strictly follow some violent teachings of their religion. These sailors and marines are being forced to go up against the worst of the worst and thus their attitudes are shaped by this. You find them saying some very startling things about their enemy that is hard to hear…but that’s the reality of war, and what it does to the mind of those fighting in them.
I also appreciated that the movie didn’t gloss over the violence of what these radical Muslims do…[spoiler alert]when the boy is being tortured and killed by that terrorist…I was horrified. This just shows you the evil levels to which men will go when they are allowed and even encouraged to do so.
Having said all this…this movie is well worth the watch. However, if you are an emotional person and can’t handle some pretty graphic scenes, this is not the movie for you. But it gives you a picture of what a real SEAL goes through while serving in a war…both while he’s on active, and then the recovering afterward.

From the time America was founded only 3% of us stood up against tyranny and fought for our rights and the rights of our loved ones. This is a true example of a modern day Patriot. Chris Kyle along with the rest of our military forces are true heros and I hope this film shows the Patriotism and the hardship that military personnel and their families go through. True Man, True Hero and True Legend!

Absolutely amazing. And for anybody who writes bad reviews, they are wrong because Chris was an amazing Seal and should be well respected, even if it's in movie form. Cooper is outstanding, as usual. Long live Chris Kyle 🇺🇸

Chris Kyle, an american hero, is powerfully portrayed by Bradley Cooper in this moving piece of film. He is shown to be who he was, not perfect, but human. It isolates itself to focus on the person behind the gun and the price of being that man. A must see with no applause necessary.

Clint Eastwood, Oscar award-winning American Sniper Director, manages to depict an incredible true story and turn it into a box office explosion. This film will have you leaving the theater in complete amazement from the tremendous cinematography, photography, and special effects.
Bradley Cooper (Chris Kyle, SEAL veteran) portrays an American Sniper that faces many heart stopping decisions on killing citizens of Iraq, even children. But, his work was keeping America, even the world, safe from destruction. Mr. Cooper does a phenomenal job on bringing Chris Kyle back life. Cooper has a very distinct character that fit his role perfectly.
Other standout performances include Luke Grimes and Sienna Miller.
Only reason I eliminated a star for a perfect score was the unnecessary violence which had every person in the audience covering half of there face. Which was a shame because you really wanted to watch what was happening. Yes, I realize that it what the real SEALS had to go through, but it could have been left out.
Overall, great movie! Enjoy it!

This was an amazing movie. A memorial to an amazing man, who sacrificed so much for fellow Americans. I knew my cousin had seen things while on his tour, but after seeing the movie I truly realize how lucky we are to have him with us today. Thank you to all the veterans and Chris Kyle. This movie has earned every single nomination. Bradley Cooper was spot on. Buy this movie; you won't regret it.

Anyone who has read the book will absolutely love the movie.
Clint Eastwood does a phenomenal job at capturing the true meaning of the story! Bradley Cooper loses himself in the role of Chris Kyle.
The film does an excellent job at showing the struggles Kyle faced with war, as well as his difficult relationship with his wife, Taya.
"God. Country. Family" was Kyle's motto, and this movie does justice to all three.
