Description

Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family, and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” helms the film, which is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics.

We didn't know that this was a stage musical brought to film. However, though it wasn't what we expected we loved it. Meryl Streep won me over on this movie. The small cameo with Johnny Depp was great - everyone was great! It is because of this movie that I would now take my family to see Wicked.

Horrible musical! Just as bad as Les Miserables! I love musicals but the music in this is a complete repetitive flop! I prefer listening to my farts in the shower flapping against the water than this horrible noise! Watch Sweeny Todd instead, that's a musical!!

This movie is great, fun and awesome. I love this movie a lot. I like how they retell the fairy tale characters stories in one movie and how. Each fairy tale character comes together crosses paths with each other and meets each other. It is one of my favorite movies ever.

into the woods is an amazing play, but if you watch the movie and have seen the original musical before, it just doesn't do it justice. there are many things about the play that tie it all together, bring together different stories and different people, and the movie takes that away by removing the mysterious man character. some very good parts of the original were taken out or changed, and I can't help but be disappointed. but if I hadn't seen the play before watching, I might have thought otherwise.

The music is fabulous, the acting was awesome, great cast. As a big fan of the play, I loved this movie! All the people saying that this movie was horrible and not kid appropriate obviously never saw the original or did their research before taking their children to see it. The fairy tales in this movie are based off of the original fairy tales, not the romantcized disney ones. I love this movie, its amazing, and most of the references would go over younger children's heads.

I haven't been so let down by a film in a long time. Went in expecting an exciting, slightly twisted and darkly funny musical romp; came out with a dragging, ear-offending bore.
The cast had the potential to make this film, but they just couldn't save the material. Meryl was pretty good as the witch, Johnny Depp was disturbingly amusing in his short bit, and most of the others had their moments. However, Cinderella and Red Riding Hood grated on me and a lot of the supporting cast had barely any time to show off. They were just... there.
Where do I even start with the music? In a word: BORING. Don't get me wrong, I know Stephen Sondheim can make excellent music and it can work wonderfully in films (I for one adore the film version of Sweeney Todd), but this just felt like the same droning song throughout the entire movie. I've read from other reviews that Disney really butchered the original soundtrack, so maybe the stage version is better. Aside from 'Agony' by the two princes (save yourself the two hours and just search for the clip on Youtube; it's hilarious), none of the songs stood out or lent themselves to singing or humming along. Good musicals have the power to sweep you into the scene and make you want to burst out along with the characters; in this one I just wanted to tell them to shut up and talk. Total misfire in the musical category.
The plot was a glorious mess. A lot of very interesting twists on the classic fairy tales (as part of a larger story) were set up in the beginning, but so much (according to fans of the stage version) was cut and so many avenues were unexplored. Like how the baker and Rapunzel were hinted to be brother and sister? Never pays off. Even if they wanted to clean it up and not go with Rapunzel's original fate, they could have at least had the two of them cross paths and tie up one loose end. The jumbled, half-a**ed plots also make it seem like character actions come out of nowhere. Like the Prince and Cinderella deciding they're suddenly not that into one another? With some better context between the 'happy ending' and 'let's break up' it could have been a powerful moment showing that sometimes people who seem perfect together to start turn out to be incompatible.
Speaking of context, someone forgot to inform the makers of the film that 'show, don't tell' is a good rule of thumb. We hear all about the giants in the sky from Jack, but aside from some semi-hidden shots of them in when they come down from their home, we don't see them nor do we ever see their world in the sky. We never see the festival or the ball, nor do we see chemistry develop between Cindy and her prince or Rapunzel and hers. Just songs where they tell other characters about it. How about love duets? Is it too much to ask that our couples show us they're falling in love (or lust or whatever)?
So why two stars instead of the very tempting one? Well I have to admit there were moments that I did enjoy. In fact the moments I actually liked seem to be the ones that get most other critics riled up in alarm. Johnny Depp's moment as paedo-wolf for example: the original fairy tale was a cautionary tale about rape, so it was disturbing yet bizarrely entertaining to see the subtext brought to the surface so blatantly. The moment where the Prince and the Baker's Wife kissed (and apparently more in the stage version) was surprising and quite gripping after all the time she and her husband spent on their adventure. It showed flaws and sticky aspects of even good people. I also appreciated the inclusion of the grittier parts of the original fairy tales (Cindy's step-sisters' feet, the blinding of one of the princes, etc.). Of course, I happen to agree with the critics that these didn't jive with the PG rating at all. It should have at least been PG-13 so people weren't taking their young kids to see it without being prepared to explain a few things when it was over!
Aside from a couple good scenes and a few decent performances, this movie was terrible. With the all-star cast and a (supposedly) good score to draw from, it's extremely disappointing that this was the result.

In all honesty, this movie does depict the original versions of the fairy tales perfectly. All the singing was truly annoying and it was quite honestly a little too dark and scary. I would not let any kid under the age of 12 watch the movie. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seemed a little rushed and too sad. Whereas I laughed at most of it, a little kid would probably cry. If they didn't cry, they would for sure have nightmares. Overall I wish I could unsee the movie. It was just too weird.

Y'all are complaining that it has no happy endings and is not for kids. There are usually no happy endings. I mean the little mermaid dies in the end of the real story. Peter Pan kills the lost boys when they get to old.cinnderella's stepsisters cut their heels and toes off.reason for four stars is because it stayed true to the story reason for one missing star is because Prince Charming cheating and they sang to much.loved it overlapping in their.my final message is READ THE REAL STORIES

Hope they make a sequel

This movie is great!! The music rocks and the actors were very good. I haven't seen the play but since the movie is great I bet the play is even better! I think it was an awesome movie. There were a few boring parts but that didn't take anything away from the movie being good.! It was very long but it was ok because they had a lot to say. I absolutely hated this movie. It was a total waste of my time and money. I mean like when I went to go see it ten people walked out twenty minutes into the movie! Almost everything that could have gone wrong with this movie, did. And it was solo inappropriate for children.
Here is a few reasons why:
-Cinderella's prince makes out with another woman.
-the princes rip open their shirts.
- the bakers wife and jacks mom die.
That is only a few of the reasons why this movie was so inappropriate for kids.
Oh. And Johnny Depp's performance was horrifying.
I wish there was a no star option.

Horrible.

Man, that was 2 hours down the drain! The whole movie was the characters speaking in rhymes while running through the woods. After the first hour I was beginning to get just slightly annoyed with the constant same-old setting. We get one scene in the castle yard and then, guess what? Back into the woods. I also don't think Disney did a good job of warning parents about this movie and how dark it is! ****Spoiler Alert**** I know they had to include the scene with the baker's wife and Charming, but it was painfully long- long enough for my younger sister to start asking what was happening and my brother to hide his face and make gagging noises. There was way to much detail included in some parts we didn't have to witness as the audience- the sound effects for the toe and heel chopped off, wolf's stomach cut open, etc. And what was up with the witches "death?" She starts singing about midnight and then melts into a tar pit? We were all scratching our heads when she just disappeared. ****End of SPOILERS****
The movie was long, dark, obviously made for an older crowd but not marketed as so (my little sister saw the trailer at a kiddy movie) and 2 hours you will never get back. I don't usually write reviews but I though I'd contribute to the many already out there. They were saved from a 1 star rating only by the acting, which was spectacular. Do not watch this movie unless you want to be bored out of your mind. It's a good excuse to take a nap.

Why Disney? Why make this worthless trash?

This movie was great with a great beginning soundtrack and beginning plot. Anna Kendrick was also very good.
However, once it goes downhill, it goes downhill rather quickly. I can think of at least 3 problems with this movie
1. More than half of the characters died. Really. There were at least 12 characters in the beginning, and guess how many were at the end? 6 including the baby. And all the baby did was cry! So in reality, there were only 5 characters left! What the heck? This was too dark for many ADULTS.
2. The singing was SUPER weird. There was WAY too much singing. Singing about your dead wife? Why would you EVER sing about your dead wife when she just died!?
3. Johnny Depp was advertised a lot, but he played such a small part in the movie. He was the wolf. And oh yes, he died too.
Overall, this movie gets 2 stars instead of 0 stars because of the beginning. And Anna Kendrick (Cinderella). They should have ended the movie before the giant lady went looking for Jack. Was that needed? No it was not. Better luck next time Disney. I do not recommend this movie. In my opinion, Maleficent was 5 times better than this! And even Maleficent was only okay. One more thing. Cutting off parts of a foot are just disgusting for me and a lot of people in this movie.

The movie really loses steam mid way and the ending spirals into something scattered and half brained. Despite that I was teary eyed at the end, I still would not call this a good movie or story by a long shot. The music at times is pretty good and other times its annoying. Most “original” faery tales were not based on anything pleasant so I don’t hold the dark theme against it, however the moral of the story is a bit lost in the woods itself. This movie could have used better direction and vision. Should you watch it? I hear its a broadway or stage show… perhaps thats better and worth checking out instead.

I was absolutely loving everything about this film. It was quirky, had a great cast and the musical score was very entertaining. The highlight for me was the two princes ripping their shirts off while singing about the agony of being in love. Classic.
Then the second half of the movie happened…..
It was bad, I mean like really bad. It took everything I enjoyed about the first half of the movie and did everything in its power to make us want to suffer for the audacity of enjoying its charm. I think that it was concocted in a laboratory by sadists, bent on seeing just how much they could get us to like something, then rubbing our noses in it. I quite literally sat through the entire last half of the movie hoping that something would be redeemed of the first act. I just about got up and walked out when the heroine (while singing about her love for her husband), falls to her death. That clenched it for me.
Buy the musical score if you want the best that this film has to offer. If you do decide to watch it, stop at the happily ever after at the halfway point. Otherwise, get ready for a giant middle finger for your trouble.

Sondheim’s original show was one of the best Broadway had ever seen - as complex, interwoven, and nuanced as the music he wrote for it.
This? A castrated cripple devoid of hearts, guts, or - almost - music. The story has been pasteurized, homogenized, and clichéd into something which tastes like American cheese (which is to say, nothing). The score has been hacked to bits, losing all coherence and continuity along with most of its songs. The singers? Can’t, won’t, or don’t, and so have been engineered into to something which recalls the whining of exhausted wasps.
Saddest of all is how utterly and literally witless it is. Encountering “Into the Woods” again in this form is like coming upon your old friend Oscar Wilde, lobotomized and drooling in a gutter.

Stephen Sondheim's original 1987 musical production is so brilliant with it's many thought provoking themes. I had no idea what Disney, a child friendly corporation, would do to a musical like Into the Woods, which is for an ADULT audience (older teens too!). Well, they butchered it, dumbing it down to a pulp. They cut some of the best songs (Ever After, Agony Repraise, etc), as well as some really great lines that makes the musical what it is. If you love musicals and want to see Into the Woods, please watch the live stage 1991 version with Bernadette Peters (it's availiable here on itunes). Meryl is good, but she has nothing on Bernadette. Or...go see the actual musical production if you can!

I saw this movie in the theater and liked the first part. I thought it was interesting and the music was great, but the Johnny Depp scene was freaky and seemed to suggest something other than a wolf eating another person. The second part was not what I expected in the worst possible way, the writing became scattered and unfocused, the music became boring and the characters became completely different people (Prince Charming and the bakers wife! Are you serious!). It was so bad and long that I kept checking the time and finally walked out. It's a shame because the actors seemed promising but the writing completely ruined the movie.

Wow, that was awful

Let's just clear the air. This was not advertised as a children's movie. Into The Woods is a dark fairytale and is actually truer to the original stories themselves rather than the earlier Disney adaptations. Disney is not to blame here. (I personally think that its darker storylines are not really a deterrent and is still child friendly. It is just not sunshine all the time.)
Now, that being said, this movie was SO AMAZING! I saw it in the theater and I could not take my eyes off the screen. The cast sang so wonderfully and really brought it to life. Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and James Corden were OUTSTANDING! This movie is quite complex and thought-provoking. Worth every penny!

INTO THE WOODS is a BRILLIANT, EXCITING and ENCHANTING musical written by Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine back in the mid 80’s. Disney & Rob Marshal did an awesome job at putting this stage musical on the big screen. Normally I would never write a review of a movie, but I actually felt the need to write something in defense of this masterpiece after reading all of the 1 star idiotic, asinine & inane negative comments that various folks felt the need to post here. Who are these people anyway!?! For it seems that most of them were just completely destroyed & quite appalled that someone in the film might actually cheat on their spouse, or worse yet, that a great deal of the characters in this tale met with an untimely death due to the actions of others in the story. HELLO?!! Last time I checked, people cheat & people die!
The last thing I want to do is be one of those blowhards who starts some sort of war of words here, but jeez folks… you have to know from all the trailers & advertising Disney did that preceded the release of this movie that this fairy tale was by no means some rated “G” kid’s Pollyanna fluff piece where in the end everyone ends up hand in hand, circling a fire and singing “Kumbaya”!!! So if you have your little children watching this, shame on you! (again, doesn’t anyone bother to read the ratings before you plop your kids down to watch a film?)
All in all this movie musical has an incredible amount to offer a thinking/feeling individual & so much to say about real life in relation to what happens to each of the characters after “Happily Ever After!” ENJOY THE JOURNEY!!!
P.S. Do take a moment to read some of the 1 star reviews below because most of them really are quite comical, especially when it comes to spelling! God bless them!

This was never meant for kids

The original Into the Woods was much darker than this adaptation and was originally meant for adults only. Please do not rate this movie poorly just because it was not the nice disney movie you came to expect. It's filled with tons of dark humor, fun songs, and great performances. I felt it was a great movie. You NEED to realize that if they had not added the scenes that are very situated on adult material that the message of the story would not have been brought through. So please, watch this with the intention of seeing a dark movie with many allegories and positive messages that your kids will not understand very well. Ultimately entertaining and a very faithful adaptation of the Sondheim classic.

Great Film Adaptation of Original Play

I loved it. Everyone who gives it less than three stars is stupid. It is based off of a play that isn't necessarily written for kids. And all of the more adult things are just so that adults can enjoy it too. I find it sort of like one of my favorite plays Les Miserables so it is perfect.

Don't Hate Disney For This

Stunning movie for one of the best musicals out there. While they cut some of the best parts out of the musical out, I can see why Disney did it (to make it more family-appropriate and to make the movie shorter). The actors did a great job and the picture was beautiful.
I am surprised at how many people are bashing Disney for this movie. Everyone needs to understand that ITW was an already existing musical before the movie was released, and that it is NOT meant for young audiences, it's geared towards an older age group! You should have read reviews before taking young children to see this, because just because it's Disney doesn't mean it's for kids. Nonetheless, this was one of my favorite movies of 2014.

"Into the Woods" is definitely NOT for kids. So many problems with this film. First, there is no happy ending in this film! It's a fairytale for God sakes! Where's the happy ending?! Second, Jack stole gold coins, golden egg, and a golden harp. And Jack was never arrested for stealing. That teaches kids that they can steal and get away with it. Third, Prince Charming making out with the bakers wife. I had no idea Prince Charming cheated on women. That also teaches kids that they can cheat on women. And Johnny Depp! I don't even want to talk about that scene. He acted like a rapist who just got out of prison. Epic fail, Disney! And you wonder why there is so many problems in the world. I'll give you a hint. YOUR MOVIE! Oh, and pecking out eyes, slicing off toes and a heel?! So inappropriate.

BEST MOVIE EVER!

This was the worst movie I've seen in a long time. I can't believe it has so many great reviews. The cast is fantastic but they don't belong in this badly written movie. When I heard the songs were written by the guy who wrote the Wicked songs, I vas excited, but when I heard them, I was completely disappointed. The worst script ever and the worst movie ever. Thanks.

This is a great movie but I think things were weird like the wolf in some parts. The music was great and story was true to Grimm stories. Not a kid movie! Some parts were very sad!🙈🙉

I loved this movie I wouldn't recommend it to younger kids because of some cuts, blood, toe cutting off and heel cutting off. The actors are all amazing and I loved the songs so I would recommend this movie to 3rd graders and older. Great job Disney! 😄

I think this show was amazing! This is coming from someone who saw the original Broadway cast, with Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, and Robert Westenberg. The singing was phenomenal, I was a little iffy at first because they lowered the Baker's Wife songs to lower notes. But I found it was best for Emily to sing and I loved it!
Notes to people who say "There was too much singing":
What do you think a musical is?
It's a play that has both dancing AND singing. If you don't like all the singing, then don't watch it! I mean haven't you seen the previews?? Obviously you wouldn't like it, please just... Leave musicals😂 it makes me laugh when I read the one and two star reviews and it's saying "Too much singing" it's with all musicals😋😊
This by far one of the best musical made movies, except for the classics with Howard Keel!
-Die Hard Theatre Girl💕😋

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen and recommend movie for people who like sad dramatic funny and nice and good movies! I like the music in it and I think they should make a second movie with the characters and fairytales they didn't use in this movie such as: Aladdin, Beaty and the beast, the little movie, the three little pigs, Snow White...etc...

This was a great movie, but not as great as it could have been. This version of Into the Woods could have been better if Disney didn't come and make it all Disney. Can't they have a movie with a higher rating than PG for once?
I'm also disappointed in the fact that there is no narrator in the movie. What was the point of pulling the character anyway?
Anyway, that's all there is that was upsetting about the movie. Great movie overall. Great for families and having a good laugh. I would recommend it.
