Don’t listen to the negative reviews - no one watches this because it will be in the top 10 films of all time — it’s sci-fi and it gives you everything needed to push the right buttons. I’ve watched this movie several times and always enjoy it. No critical review - just fun.

the plot is so confusing and twisted that i'm unsure of what's going on for the majority of the film... but boy do i have a good time watching it!! it's such a gorgeous and interesting movie, and i really enjoyed the religious overtones. plus, noomi rapace and michael fassbender are extremely talented (and pretty!) so that really makes up for all of the pitfalls.
accessibility note: i observed that there are a lot of missing words in the subtitles. nothing that ruins the movie, but still.

Just great!

I loved this film, it’s not a typical
Alien re-boot like Covenant. Its original and very well done ( actors, story, even the ship itself)
More a character study and meditation on the creation of life with just the right amount of alien action, not too “ in your face” like previous re-boots. Unfortunately everyone was hating on the film when it came out because they were expecting jump scares or yet another re- boot
( not a philosophical character study which was original and a great alien origin story and not too obvious ) a true passion project from Ridley Scott.
As a result of all the Cry Babies Bad Reviews, Ridleys Scott was pressured into making “Alien Covenant”
witch I think was good but Totally paled in comparison.
This man is a legend, you could argue Prometheus was on par with the original blade runner or the first alien films for originality, set design, great cast/ acting, and character development, even the ship in Prometheus felt like it was its own character) .
Perhaps he was overwhelmed by having to make blade runner 2020 like the same year as AlienCovenant , probably why he had another director involvin B. Runner 2020 instead of directing that awesome film by himself.
Long story short,
people need to stop giving bad reviews just because they couldn’t appreciate a fresh and original take on the Alien franchise like Prometheus. If you do hate on a good film like that it makes the studio big wigs and possibly the director to compromise and please the cry babies. I enjoyed Alien Covenant, David’s story of the original xenonmorph was the best part, the rest fell short by miles, it pales in comparison to Prometheus. So AlienCovenant is what you get thanks to the haters bad reviews. I truly admire Ridley Scott since I watched Legend as a child, I really hate when great directors have to compromise for whatever reasons. Alien covenant had so much wasted potential, but it wasn’t all bad, I still bought it. But you get my meaning
Be careful what you wish for haters!

Yes, I can easily see how this fits into the Aliens mythology. The plot had some large elements that were very difficult to believe, apart from it being a sci-fi. There were things the charecters did that was terribly predictable for an 80's or 90's horror movies or things they said that was as predictably cheesy. It all fell a little flat except for the key elements which could have been wrapped up into a 20 minutes section.
I read all the negative reviews when this first came out. I should have known. I suppose I had to prove it to myself and now I'm just really disappointed. While technically still Aliens mythology, this film in the Aliens series is like trying to sell Titanic as part of the Godfather series simply because there was an Italian family on board. That's how I felt anyhow. Basically, this was like watching Event Horizon with an alien at the end.

Just a warning to those hoping to watch this in 4K: the audio is out of sync by several seconds. No, this is not an issue with my 4K streaming devices (Apple TV, iPad Pro, iPhone X) but with the hosted file on iTunes. If you download and view in 1080, audio is fine. I contacted iTunes support about this, and after several wasted hours of troubleshooting, and then two weeks of waiting to hear back from engineers, I ended up just getting a refund. Buyer beware.

Edited Review: Fox decided that we should no longer have access to the director commentary and the other iTunes Extras - What the hell Fox. Give me back what I paid for!
Original Review:
So first off I have seen this movie about 13 times in theaters - it is a movie I absolutely love - its a movie I've waited for several years to see - it is quite simply a great film with several layers - you'll get something new each time you watch it.
Secondly Fox is really doing this the right way. The price is 5 dollars cheaper than the typical big release (at 15 bucks versus 20). The release date is also a few weeks early for HD customers - another great thing Fox is doing. This appears to include a director's commentary which, I believe is a first for iTunes content! There are also deleted scenes - I really wish there were documentaries, but the commentary makes up for it. I'm not sure why commentaries were not included in the past, but it seems that the studios are willing to release them digitally and that is a good thing.
A great movie and being released in the right way by the studios - what more could you ask for?

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Did I mention that this movie was stupid? If you're a sci-fi geek it's probably great... I guess. Otherwise it's a painful movie to sit through. The only purpose to the whole movie is to set the stage for the next one... which will probably set the stage for the next one. Fast and the Furious #212 makes this look like Gone With the Wind. I hope that I wasn't unclear.

A supposedly trained biologist touches a completely unknown, menacing-looking alien creature without any protection because he thinks it's cute. Charlize Teron tries to escape from a huge object that is going to crush her by running along the shadow of said killing object. And the whole thing was re-written by Damon Lindelof, the one who had no idea how to explain the TV series LOST when he co-created it.

Despite it's subtle, intelligent themes, the Alien franchise sports a fanbase largely immune to artistic complexity. Ignore the fanboys attempting to write like real film critics.
'Prometheus' incorporates both the thrilling opacity of 'Alien' and the seminal art of H.R. Giger, the designer of the original xenomorph.
Just like 'Alien,' it is a pulpy exploration of SciFi's thriller roots, rather than a cheap horror flick. The plot is thin, yet disturbing. Truly shocking elements of body horror emerge from the plodding exploration of an alien world.
By the film's sudden and bizarre climax, all we desire is an answer-laden sequel.

Aliens (xenomorphs) have been done to death in movies over the years so Ridley Scott (who's returning to the franchise since the first Alien movie) decided to expand on the Aliens universe and explore not only where they came from, but where we come from as well.
The reason I enjoyed Prometheus so much is because they explore ideas of humanities creation, who God truly is and the Aliens stuff is in the background of the entire thing.
Don't go in expecting your typical Aliens flick. This movie is mostly setup and Xenomorphs will be returning in the sequel that's due out in May 2017.

Ridley Scott lost the plot.

It seems obvious they found the race that spawned the "Aliens" but it's not clear (at least to me) that they also created us? I suppose Scott's new "Alien" film may dusclose that but who knows. I love all Scott's films even the not so great ones (Exodus) for there well photographed and acted success. Sometimes the story seems overly complicated or too simple but in the end they are "A" movies. Enjoyed this for what it is a simple "Science Fiction" film. There's always twists in Ridley's film but it's not always apparent.

Many of the reviewers of this film who felt it was flawed in one way or the other were expecting something quite different from what the movie delivered.
I've watched the original Alien movie and its sequel Aliens and found both movies to be very good SiFi films. The rest of the sequels were not as good.
Both Alien and Aliens and this movie ended on a hopeful note where a strong (in all three cases) woman managed to overcome great odds and persist.
This movie continues that same theme with Noomi Rapace as an excellent choice to carry on the role that Sigourney Weaver did such a super job creating in the first two movies.
I understand there is a another movie after this one and if they stick to the same template as this movie (and the origianal two Alien movies) then it too will be a success.
The movie is very well done. Also, as in the original two movies humans are depected as pretty dim-witted when they should be going about things in a scientific manner, and as far as a SiFi plot device goes; this sort of characterization always has long legs.
I reccommend this movie.

This is a polished looking production, but otherwise totally lacking in quality writing, character development, continuity, and all the other things that one would expect from a big name director and production. This movie is eye candy but thats it. The plot (if there was one) was very poorly done, practicly everything important in the film was not explained or did not have enough impact to make to make me care. This film had a few fun scenes but the overall just frustrated me. For example. If a very critical scene were to happen that could have been branched on, 5 minutes later the entire crew would act like it never happened or never bring it up. The characters fell very bleh with B rated horror film inteligence.
All in all if you like visuals/ eye candy this is a good movie. If you like good story telling you can easily skip this, or rent it.

This is one of those few films that would have been a better experiance if the sound was muted. The slick direction and set design cannot make up for one of the worst screenplays ever commited to film. Not a single character action is in character or makes sense. Not a single plot point is logical or even consistant with the little we are told. We never know the motivations of anyone, and the actions they take contrary to all possible forms of self-interest are baffling. I have never been so angry leaving a movie theatre.

I dislike giving a negative review to one of my favorite directors (The Duellists!), but Prometheus was missing the spark that makes a movie great: a well developed script. The special effects were good, and some of the early cinematography was beautiful--a bit like Malick--but really, who the hell said this script was OK? The actors struggled to create something out of nothing, with Michael Fassbender working miracles with his part. The music was completely inappropriate, and much of the directing seemed as if someone else had been given instructions to "direct like Ridley Scott" and Himself had said "whatever" to the results, much like an absent God who cares little for his creation. Too bad Scott didn't destroy this movie before it grew legs and left the editing bay.
To all the 5-star reviewers who keep insisting this movie is deep: a few allusions to the dangers of tampering with the elements of creation, the arrogance of humankind and the nature of God's place in our universe don't make up for the cardboard cutout characters, asinine dialogue and messy action sequences. Ponder that while you enjoy your GMO, microwaved Frankenpopcorn and buttery topping.

I would have assumed that the creator of Alien would have had a bit more answers for us if he was going to take us on another Alien journey, but regretfully those answers never came. I left the theater with more questions than when I went in. Amazing detail and special FX but the story was like watching the actors make up the scenes as they went along all the while forgetting where they were in the scheme of things. Too many things were taken for granted, nothing was actually explained no reasons, things just happened and we were supposed to just know or assume to know why they did. The acting was O.K. but the lines were so dry and lifeless that it didn't really seem they went with the movie. I am a HUGE Alien fan (up to 4) and had high hopes for this movie but it was so full of holes and chaos that I cannot give it more that ONE star. Beware of false stars.

While searching for answers to the biggest unanswerable questions... nobody really questioned anything. And the makers of this movie are really hoping you don't either.
For a spaceship full of scientists they were incredibly stupid.
We think there may be life in here... Lets take off our helmets and get exposed to any and all bacteria, viruses, or spores in the air that we have no natural defenses for...
The guy with the fancy map is the one who gets lost. The biologist decides to pet an obviously dangerous and aggressive creature.
Attaching electrodes to the head of something that is supposed to be genetically identical to a human will make its head explode with strange colored slime everywhere. Wait, what?
If the xenomorph cocktail is what brought life to earth, why would human beings be genetically identical to their supposed creators? I'm okay with the idea that humans are genetically identical to a 12 foot tall giant. Great danes and chihuahuas are more or less the same. But apparently human evolution only goes in one direction and everything else is an offshoot? There is absolutely no understanding of biology or any science in this movie. How did it only take 2 years to get this moon? The list goes on and on and on...
The motivations of the man who put this whole story into action are really weird as well.
I don't want to die! I'm going to strap myself onto a rocket and shoot myself into space to some moon that might not even exist, because some little girl found a cave painting thousands of years old ( our constantly moving planet/solar system/galaxy not withstanding ) for the slightest chance to meet and talk to an alien in english. This alien will then magically make me live forever? Wait, WHAT?!

Don't even think about it...

I was really disappointed with this movie…the well known and famous director Ridley Scott left his imagination at home while directing this movie…the movie has so many short comings that it is unbelievable and astonishingly glaring…no plot, no direction, no ideals, and the quality of the acting was quite horrid if not just down right terrible…I recommend that they send this back to the editing room and add in all the pieces that were taken out and maybe just maybe the movie would make sense to all of us Science Fiction fans…in short don't waste your time go find something else to watch or do….by the way…the movie sets were quite realistic...

Aside from the stunning visuals, this film was dreadful. It's merely a rehash of the tired out alien franchise. Just about every element of the bumbling plot was taken from Ridleys earlier successes, the aliens came out of the characters belly again for goodness sake. It felt as though I had already seen the movie as I was watching it. The entire premise of the movie made no sense to me. The narrative starts off by saying evolution and darwinism is wrong, I thought well ok I guess its a fantasy so I can deal with that for the sake of entertainment, but then you meet the crew. I would think if you were sending a likely multi-billion dollar space ship, a half a billion miles away for a project that cost over a trillion dollars (all stated in the movie) to find extra-terrestrial life and possibly the origin and meaning of all man kind, you wouldnt send a bunch of idiots. The decisions these characters are making throughout the film are stupid and unrelateable. I found myslef yelling at the screen throughout the whole movie. Why are these people on this vital mission so careless, incompetent and rash, when they should be intelligent and collected people, capable of dealing with adversity like real people who train for spcae missions. Uhg, just dreadful. Why Ridley Scott...

The story made no sense with enough holes in the storyline to sink a barge. Too many unanswered questions. This film is painfully bad, because it looks so great on the surface. It's a lot like the first Star Wars prequels, which played great as a trailer, but the film is a disaster. It's exactly the same thing here, sadly. This film has one of the worst scripts I've ever seen. Characters make absolutely brain-dead decisions at every turn, and the narrative completely unravels. Characters are constantly putting theirselves in harms way for no reason whatsoever. The worst sin of the story is that it's intentionally aimless and pointless. The only redeeming quality of Prometheus is the spectacular cinematography. Save your money, and more importantly, your time.

Buyer Beware!! Do NOT pay money for what is an incomplete version of the film.
This version is missing proper texts that were originally in theaters, such as when we first see the Prometheus ship. Originally there was animated text introducing the ship, it's destination, cargo, crew, etc. The text does NOT appear in this version through iTunes!
Nice job Fox/iTunes!!

A concept so big so that it can't be successfully executed. It's not horrible, but it's not good either.

I was really looking forward to seeing Prometheus, and we were promised by director Ridley Scott in interviews that this was not a prequel to Alien. I was excited, but by the end of the film, I felt like I had been lied to. As I went back through the film, I realized that this film is just an extended backstory about how the Aliens came about. We've seen 90% of the plot contrivances in the past Alien films. Unless Ridley has an original story up his sleeve for the sequels, I won't be plopping down my cash to rent this or any others.

I am a sci-fi fan bar none! This is absolutely one of the worst sci-fi movies I have ever watched. It is a disgrace to Alien and Aliens. Think Star Wars Phantom Menance if you want to know how awful a prequel to a great story can be. All that's missing is Jar Jar Binks. If I could ive it zero stars I would.

Big disappointment

The story as it develops would not be possible if the archaeologists did NOT do what NO archaeologist would EVER do. Even the most incompetent one. On that basis alone, the movie loses all credibility. It is just one stupid and moronic decision after the other. Alien still remains the best by far of all the series, and that is just Halloween in space.

Horrible!

The plot stumbled along never really going anywhere. Nothing was explained and piggy backing on the Alien franchise was a crime. This movie is a yawnfest the only thing great about it was the end credits.

Masterful filmmaking but that's about it.

When it comes to effects and cinematography the film is far beyond most films to come out this year. But ultamilty this story requires masterful story telling and this is the film's weakest area. Too many unanswered questions and pointless events happen in the film to drive most viewers to write off the film as disappointing.

DONT BUY!!

I watched this at the movies and did not understand anything. There was absolutely no story line and the acting was terrible. This movie was not smooth and all and very weird. It is not worth anything, never mind the fifteen bucks iTunes wants you to spend on it.

Prometheus hangs all of its beautiful scenery and stunning special effects on a script that is ludicrously underwhelming. The plywood thin characters careen about from absurd contrivance to inexplicable catastrophe, as if this multi-trillion dollar space mission was staffed by the lowest bidder. The acting is bland save for Micheal Fassbender's portrayal of David, who pretty much steals every scene he is in. The rest of the crew are bumbling fools who deserve to end up alien chow. If this film had been presented in the same vein as Alien Vs Predator, then perhaps I could have sat back and enjoyed the ride. But Prometheus was hyped as a serious sci-fi film, not an action farce, and its inexcusable for a supposedly serious science fiction film to treat a spaceship full of scientists with such casual disregard.
It gets 2 stars because its pretty, and thats it.

This movie (many i see are not aware) is actually based (!) on some ideas of very problematic people.
I was extremely bored with it because it was a mixture of old movies like Alien. Boring nonsense!
Ridley Scott was a good director, what happened?

Truly wanted this to be amazing. Waited for a year after reading about it In production. Love Ridley Scott's work. Sci Fi/Fantasy novels/movie Snob. It's really only the Dune's And LOTR's quality of Story's I will ever rate as 10's. So when I say that This Flick Was Not What It Should Have, could have Been. You don't have to wonder if It's "just my opinion" that is why I didn't like it. Now it's great eye candy. The problems are that he had some really cool Sci Fi story ideas that were only talked about for way to little. Not explained or expanded on in any way. It's one thing to not insult an audiences intelligence. It's a different thing to just not give any real information. Then when you do it not be in any realm of real possible science. Thee most frustrating thing however. For a lot of others I've talked with, is that as much as we are pist off about this disappointment. We all are still feeling like we have to see the sequel. Yes that sounds crazy. You will understand once you see this movie. It's the Ending. Well and the fact that you need a bunch of Fn answers to stuff. But because we have to see where they GO!!!! What The F...k Happens Now!?!?!? Ya almost everyone who will ever see this will be so pist off then more pist off when the movies over and you come to this conclusion.!!! Lol Of Course if you kept reading to this point. You are now going to rent it just out of curiosity. Well I Told You So! So Go Ahead Dead Cat!!

AN AMBITIOUS, STYLISH SCI-FI PREQUEL

Ridley Scott's long-awaited return to sci-fi filmmaking, "Prometheus", is undoubtedly one of the most creative, daring, and visually enthralling films I've seen all year. Functioning as a quasi-prequel to 1979's "Alien", this movie not only brilliantly expands on the fantastic universe first introduced more than thirty years ago, but it also stands on its own as a beautifully haunting sci-fi/horror adventure with a highly intriguing premise, a new set of characters, and some of the most striking visual effects in recent memory. Although the movie fails to answer many of the big questions it brings up, it more than makes up for in solid pacing, chilling atmosphere, and quality storytelling. On its own, it's a genuinely entertaining alien fright flick.
The film, which takes place in the late 21st century, centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they follow a star map discovered among the remnants of several ancient Earth cultures. The crew of explorers, seeking the origins of human life, soon arrive on a distant world where they discover an advanced civilization, and a threat that could cause the extinction of the human race.
Just by reading that synopsis, it's clear that the plot of "Prometheus" isn't exactly the most original story in the sci-fi genre. But how it's presented is an entirely different story. Ridley Scott has a way of making every scene rich with tension and bursting with uncertainty. You never know what will happen at any point in the movie, which makes it all the more enjoyable to watch until the very end. As for the cast, the majority of actors (Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Logan Marshall-Green) do the best with the roles they're given, but it's Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender who stand out as the most memorable and truly committed performers in the entire film. Noomi lights up the screen as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, the archaeologist of the crew who undergoes one of the most horrifyingly grueling situations ever portrayed in cinema. Fassbender, on the other hand, delivers one of the best performances of his career as a fastidious humanoid robot named David, easily one of the most fascinating (and disturbing) characters of 2012, by far. And as for Marc Streitenfeld's haunting score, let's just say it'll leave you absolutely breathless by the second act. It's that intense.
Although there are many great things to say about "Prometheus", the film also has its share of downsides. I felt that Guy Pearce's character (I won't give away who it is) was completely unnecessary and didn't need to be added into the storyline whatsoever. I was also a bit turned off by some of the film's awkward and heavy-handed connections to the "Alien" saga, which thankfully didn't occur as frequently as I thought they would. Overall, "Prometheus" is one of my personal favorite movies of the year, despite all its inconsistencies. With its spectacular imagery, unique alien designs, and a series of genuinely terrifying (and gory) moments, this film has nearly everything you'd expect an R-rated sci-fi/horror blockbuster to contain. Whether you've already seen the original "Alien" flicks or not, this is one adventure that's definitely worth taking.

But I found the behavior of some of the characters just ridiculous. This is the mission of all missions to outer space and who do we send? A bunch of sociopaths, egomaniacs and idiots.
Still a great time, but Mr. Scott, you have here a chance to make an unforgettable drama that happens to be in a Sci Fi realm and you just miss it entirely.
I had a good time and all, will probably see it again but it could have been SO MUCH BETTER...

This is, by far, one of the best movies of 2012, hands down. I usually don't like science fiction movies, but I absolutely loved this one. I was not bored whatsoever from the very first moment to the very last second. The visuals were absolutely stunning, and watching this movie in anything but HD would be an insult. And surprisingly, there's a lot more blood than I expected. The whole movie is pretty disturbing, and there were a few scenes that made me clench. And talk about suspenseful! It's not that scary, but the suspense is crazy here. Ridley Scott is slowly becoming my new favorite director now because all of his movies have turned out great. I recommend this movie to everyone, especially if you saw Alien, and I am definitely buying this in HD.

Scifi with mystery and class

You'll hear a lot of people saying they were confused or disappointed with this films lack of answers to it's own questions. These audiences are missing the fact that mystery is what this franchise has lost with each Alien sequel Fox produced. That Ridley Scott can return 30 years later and reinvigorate that is a godsend. The fact that audiences can't deal with actual mystery in scifi anymore shows a sign of our times: audiences expect mainstream movies to simply feed them easy plot twists, broadly identifiable characters, and explanations for every last loose end. Keep in mind when Alien cane out it probably raised just as many questions as Prometheus...and it spawned several more installments which had places to go and questions to answer. Ridley did the right thing here.
Prometheus' other great strength is that it seemed to dodge it's predecessors formula. It is it's own film; I wouldn't call this a prequel, though it does occur prior to the events in Alien. It's more a sidestep. The plot doesn't center on expletives of the the series origins, though this is the strand that pulled us all in. My worst fear would have been like 'The Thing' 2011 prequel which was largely a recital of the original plot with loads of unimaginative links to John Carpenters 1982 film; a numb, crowd appeasing uber-prequel, living off the fat of the previous installment. Prometheus avoided this pitfall at every turn possible within its confines in terms of design and plot. Thanks Ridley!!
This is not to say Prometheus doesn't have it's weaknesses. I feel like avoiding it's older siblings likenesses left Prometheus sidelining itself, unsure where to rest the plot. Our characters are...okay. We can relate to their base emotions, but their density and weight upon the stories events is not as forceful as one might hope. Much of the emotional content feels rushed and we aren't always given time with our protagonists. In the end they are summed up rather simply and we aren't left with the regret we had when Ripley was left alone on the Nostromo.
Overall, a fun movie with terrific special effects and a decent plot. A few surprises and genuine shocks really help drive this addition to the series.

An amazing experience for some

I went to see this movie in theaters with some doubt due to all the prequels and their counterparts that have been made recently, and usually fall short. This is most certainly not the case with Prometheus. This is a fantastic stand alone movie, and a tie in to the original Alien Film. It does leave you with questions but, face-it doesn't every great film. Visuals are awesome, and the attention to detail is fantastic. Though the movie did fall short in some aspects, it really does leave you wanting more. Over all very enjoyable film. I would recommend this to people who like the "Alien" Films, and John Carpenters "The Thing".

Must watch!!
