Description

Four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris (Apollo 13), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe) and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Colin Farrell (In Bruges) star in this epic saga of survival from six-time Oscar-nominee Peter Weir (Witness, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). Inspired by an incredible true story, THE WAY BACK begins in 1940 when seven prisoners attempt the impossible: escape from a brutal Siberian gulag. Thus begins a treacherous 4,500-mile trek to freedom across the world's most merciless landscapes. They have little food and few supplies. They don't know or trust each other. But together, they must withstand nature at is most extreme. Their humanity is further tested when they meet a teenage runaway who begs to join them on their quest. A compelling testament to the human spirit, this gripping wilderness adventure is "Peter Weir at his hypnotic best" (Telluride Film Festival).

I don't know why but this movie really touched my heart. Maybe it's because it shows true human spirit in the worst of places. Proving that there is good in all of us no matter how cruel & evil this world may seem

I thought the director relied too much on aesthetics and so the story seemed disjointed and not cohesive. Colin Farrell's character added some snap but Ed Harris' character didn't just fizzled toward the end. Honestly I turned the movie off I couldn't take their wandering any more.

Whether or whether not the extend of corruption and failure of the communist system, using terror, deception and brute force is explained sufficiently in this beautiful cinematography is beside the point. Weir excels in its ability to show the incredible strength of these escapees and what the human spirit can achieve, even under the most cruel circumstances imaginable. There is a constant tension and interest woven throughout the entire movie, based around the will to survive despite anything nature will through at this random group of people and despite all their differences in ideologies and believes. The fantastic landscape shots, superb acting on all parts and suspense throughout this epic movie, make this a definite must see experience.

Pleasure to see a movie with good acting, spectacular cinematography, and real human character and relationships being revealed under duress. If you're looking for gore or infighting, this isn't your flick. Thoughtful believable human interaction helps make this a 4 star plus. BRAVO to the producers, directors and actors.

There is controversy about how true the actual novel was. I mean, 4000+ miles . . . give me a break. Putting that aside, the movie itself was very good especially the makeup (which received Oscar Nomination). I recommend it; the truth behind it, I don't.

I so enjoy the abstract beauty of musical sound that I often wish it were not mixed up with the poetry of the lyrics, preferring to segregate my consumption of different concepts of art; the one being an aesthetic form and the other somewhere between rhetoric and philosophy. So it is in accordance with this kernel of my personality that, while I enthusiastically gave this movie five stars, I would have done so with even more satisfaction if instead of my simply ignoring the thematic pretension of sober political philosophy, as is my custom, the film could have respectfully left political philosophy to political philosophers, and not artlessly injected it into this exquisite example of tragic storytelling. I also enjoyed "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and the Italian film "Life is Beautiful".

I came away disappointed in this movie. First off, a little added depth into the conditions of the prison might have helped to establish true deperate times. Second, it seemed to me that the director spent more time with the visual aspects and character development, that trying to show how miserable a trip like this should have been. If you have ever spent any time in extreme conditions, you should understand that there a a multitude of challenges and situations that weather and altitude present. An opportunity was missed to really explore this with any depth. And lastly, so these guys finally make it to Tibet within an inch of thier life and I am supposed to beleive that they barely stay one night before crossing the Himalayas? Silly.

I wonder why some people watch films… I watch them to be entertained (and occasionally informed) and this is an extremely riveting film, showcasing some spectacular scenery and with some powerful performances. I suppose what happens is that people want to be like the professional reviewers and find fault in everything they see… it is all a matter of perception. Whether or not this film is based on a true story or not is neither here nor there, it is surely based on the dreams of hundreds of thousands who suffered in the gulags and mines of Siberia dreaming about freedom, the very same freedom that most of us seem to take for granted - just like Mryan points out!
Looking for a documentary, look elsewhere. Looking for Oscar performances, look elsewhere. Looking for a film that will raise your spirits, look no further.

An inspiring account of the atrocities many Poles faced in Siberian camps. Whether the story is accurate or not, it is true that many did escape with similar tales. Hundreds of thousands of Poles died at the hands of the Communists during WWII. I can only assume some of the negative comments come from the twitter generation as they suffer from short attention spans. This was an excellent thought provoking film.

This is not a movie advocating political ideology, i.e, Capitalism v. Communism. It is about a triumph of a human spirit over what seems to be impossible to achieve against trials and tribulations. The story humbly unfolds men's will to survive, the meaning of life, and essence of humanity in the midst of despondency. The actors' superb performances are highly respectful. A true masterpiece.

If you keep your finger on the Forward button throughout this movie, you won't miss a single thing. But Hollywood is so sympathetic to survival stories that Tomatometer would've given it 110% if it were possible. Escape, thirsty, water, food, die, thirsty, die, water, thirsty, water. End.

There was a real escape

Guys, don't be ignorants and please read some facts.
The book was written by English ghost writer who made an interview with SΕ‚awomir Rawicz - Polish Army officer. He described this journey with many details. The escape looked very real. After his death there was journalist investigation in this case. Rawicz could not be in Siberia because, in the same time, he was in Teheran (Iran) with 2nd Polish Army Division. After this discovery an English journalist found a 'real' man who escaped from Soviet labor camp on Siberia. He's name is Witold Glinski and he's still alive. Glinski told the story to Rawicz when he reached to Iran. The most interesting things are the documents found in hospital in India. According to these papers, three Polish inmates of Soviet labor camps reached to India.
This movie is based on true story but nobody knows who escaped.

An inspiring story about the desire to be free, and more critically, the need for each other. If you have not read the book, The Long Walk, you would do well to do so. Although there are doubts as to its authenticity, there are documented cases of people witnessing the arrival of "haggard looking men" in India, claiming to have been imprisoned in Siberia. Regardless of whether it was Rawicz and Co., the story remains a testament to the power of freedom and brotherhood.

This is a very good film. It is an inspiring story that is well told. The cinematography is superb, especially in HD. It has two shortcomings. One is that the audio track is not well done. You have to elevate the volume to understand the dialogue. The second is that at the end of the film, having invested over two hours in watching it, little is revealed about how what became of those who survived the trek. You have to search that out on Wikipedia. I would give it 3 1/2 stars, but that is not an option on this site.

It's worth trying. My wife was a bit bored during the first half hour, then got into it. I was never bored. I do feel that you never emotionally connect fully with any of the characters. But the story is worthy, and you should enjoy it. At the end it's like 'wow' and it makes you think. Ed Harris' performance is characteristically strong. I would say he followed by the girl and the thief are the best acting in the movie. The somewhat weak performance of the leading character may partially account for the movie missing the mark a bit.

First off, this movie is not true. Almost the whole thing was proven to be a lie in 2006 and the author admitted it. The only really good part of the movie is the part that is true -- that the author was in a Soviet prison camp for a while and then was released. He never walked to India. So after he "escapes" the movie is increasinlgy stupid and obviously made up. Ed Harris' acting is his typical cliche acting. How does this guy continue to get work? Colin Farrell was pretty good. Movie really drags after they leave Russia.

People continue to be misinformed. This is not a true story, nor is it based on a true story. There is not a documented case of people escaping Siberia and making it to India. The main character was not anywhere near where he claims the events took place, which is documentable. He also wrote the book after those he named had died as not to have anyone to refute his testimony.
Other than that the book and the movie are ok. There were many parts of the movie that had significant impact on the story that were left out. Its just o.k. I probably will not go out of my way to recommend it, but if someone asks...

This movie is intense. It's one of those movies, after which, you feel exhausted but satisfied. I'll admit that SOME of the ACTING is less than stellar, but the characters still inspire a great deal of empathy/concern. This story doesn't need highly developed characters.
I suspect there will be no shortage of people maligning this movie because of the way it portrays the pinkos. Forget all that garbage.

I swear IΒ΄ve never been so drowned in by a movie. I went with a friend and we both were dying to drink some large fountain drink from outside, BUT WE COMPLETELY FORGOT!! The movie brings you inside and makes you feel almost like you are living the experience!!
Have you seen 127 hours? You can tell that movie does not make you feel the anxiety. This does so amazingly, it makes your heart stay still for 2 hours, and the best part is that the story is true!! IΒ΄ve done some research because at first I could not believe people had made it that far, but apparently there are records of witnesses in India that three men were rescued!!
The movie is based on a book written supposedly by one of the walkers. Actually, the writer was just the gatherer of the story from one of the members of the group that made it to India. I would recommend reading the book first, because the book is always better than the movie. But definitely watch the movie afterwards. I donΒ΄t like paying $12 for going to the movies, thatΒ΄s why I movie-hop from room to room and I end up wathing at least three movies on one ticket. But this was the first movie I was satisfied with even though I only watched that one. Amazing
