I finished the book, now that was a five star rating. I was hoping for the movie to follow the story line from the book; I was disappointed by the movie, so I only gave it three stars. It had a great cast and SHOULD have followed the book more closely.

I tried downloading this film twice. The audio is completely silent. If I switch to Spanish, I get the movie, but for English - total silence.
Also, the HD and SD selection is screwy. The iTunes customer support person said he'd refund the price and I could try downloading the HD person. iTunes said I already had done so - in other words, both the SD and HD buttons were for the SD movie - a movie without a soundtrack in English.

I have now seen this movie twice. I even read the book 2 years ago. I am now a fan of this movie for life. I saw it on April 17 and yesterday on my friend's tv celebrating on the 4th of July My mom even saw this a lot of times. Really great film.

Not a bad movie, but not great. There was just as much bad acting as good, too many scenes were not fully developed so opportunities were lost, and there were moments that were, well, a bit silly. Being an average movie, it's OK to rent, but nothing I would buy.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's a classic tale of betrayal, love, self-doubt, and gloriously executed revenge and redemption. "Kings to you, Fernand." ... a line with chilling irony between former friends.

I can understand simplifying the book plot to put this story to film, but they don't simplify here, they change radically. The last quarter of the film has zero relation to the book, and that is the most important part of the whole story.
Why its that directors and screen writers think they can improve on the greatest literature ever written? It's a standing joke now, hollywood slaughtering good story for weak theater.

Whoever wrote the screenplay for this movie must have only read the first 200 pages of the book and made up the rest of the story. Although it is nonetheless mildly entertaining, this movie is a disgraceful portrayal on one of the greatest novels ever written.

This is a great film that I base on the merits of itself, rather than comparing it to Dumas' epic novel. The movie flows well and constantly has you cheering for poor Dantes, who has suffered so much loss that you want to revel in every second of his revenge.

I loved the book, and I love what they've done with it for the movie. Yes, changes were made, but masterfully. My wife and I actually really like and prefer some of the changes that were made. What's more, I was delighted at the way it was tastefully done, without lewd sex scenes or foul language. (There's one sensual scene where the assumption is that they had premarital sex but there's no nudity and it's off-screen/concealed.) I appreciated the realistic faith-development of the main character and the inclusion of God's providential role even in tragedy. I like the ending on the movie better than the book! Great movie to possibly watch with teens and talk about the many circumstances and character actions just ripe for dialogue and reflection regarding our own values and "what would I do in this situation?"

This movie should not have this title, nor should it bear Dumas' name. This is nothing like the original story at all! Do not see this movie if you read the book and liked it. The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books of all time and this movie is nothing like it. Even if this movie weren't modeled after my favorite book, it still wouldn't be a good movie.

Well-casted, with a proper tone and solid pacing, the taut script and lavish set pieces present a formidable period piece which sustains fair fidelity to Dumas' material despite the excessive sub-plot of religion, which functions correctly only part of the time. Also, the Warden? Yes, he was a fun character added.

It is ridiculous that I can not purchase this movie. Movies released on itunes should be both available for both purchase and rent upon release. Most of the reviews are indicating that they would purchase this movie rather than rent it. Your contractional agreements need to adopt some common sense.

If you have a hastings store that sells movies, cds, and other items you could probably find it there like i did...... but of course i live in Montana so i don't know if there are any other Hastings out there....
