If you think you might like this -- don't rent: buy it. See the beauty of the world through a blind girl. Poitier must fight for screen time with (at the time) unknown Elizabeth Hartman, who deservedly took the Golden Globe for Best Actress. This film wasn't released in the South back in 1964, and based upon today's continued racism, wouldn't be remade period. It's that good.

I saw this film on the Turner Classic Movies channel and loved the idea of the film. So I taped it and watched it at least once a week for about year, This movie is about the plight of a blind white girl who grows up in a troubled home with her hussy mother and alcoholic grandfather. She is befriended by an educated, generous black man and eventually falls in love with him. They don't make movies like this anymore!

I was a theater usher when this movie came out in the mid-1960s. I saw it 36 times, and I loved it every time I watched it. Sidney Poitier gives a typically great performance, and Elizabeth Hartman is convincing as a sheltered blind girl. The messages embedded in the movie are obvious and universal. I don't know why A Patch of Blue isn't played on the movie channels more. It is well worth renting or buying. I highly recommend it.
