I Got thru... 18 minutes- turned it off... Unwatchable- in content and the camera moving, siren blaring, dark red lights blinking... Literally car sick... Creative- No. Wanting to be- Maybe. Not even trying to imbed a human story- just sick shock-value footage that makes you wonder the real effects of drugs on our youth, lack of ambition and education- not just from the show, but from film schools and writers and producers. Not worth typing anymore about this... Waste of film- waste of time, Not one redeeming take or positive element - at all...period.

...you suffer from vertigo. Might trigger an attack.
...you don't like riding on roller coasters.
...enjoy a film that starts at the beginning and ends at the end.
...you are turned off by excessive violence and profanity.
Other than that there are performances that can be considered decent. In this film the bad outweighs the good. Good luck. Be warned: a very disturbing rape scene.

This movie isn't for everyone. It doesn't portray the pollyanna vision of humanity that some many seem to be looking for in film-- but rather, the darker side of humanity. It is so dark, in fact, that in might be completely impalateable or some.
But that doesn't make it a bad movie.
The movie is also structured in an odd way-- in reverse chronological order. It begins with a 10 minute scene, then another 10 minute scene that occurred preceding the first one, then another, and so forth. This is NOT just a gimmick, as certain details are seen in a light that would not be seen had the film been made otherwise. It's really terrifically creative.
The camerawork was pretty annoying at times-- very disorienting as there were lots of shaky, swirling shots. I suppose this was to underscore the hellish chaos of all the dark emotions that threaded the work together, but for me, it made the piece just plain difficult to watch at times.
I was moved by the flick. That's what movies are for, and so many fail miserably on that count. It wasn't pretty. Art doesn't HAVE to be pretty.

Not for everyone, but then, neither is art

Graphic, brutal, intense and unwavering, Irreversible reminds me of the sort of classical fairy tales told to children to teach them right from wrong, with their general context of morality, villains and damsels in distress, and often horribly violent and gruesome content. Be forewarned, this is not for even the slightly faintest of heart as the film has the illusion of being shot in one long seamless take, making the two most graphic scenes in the movie sadistically voyeuristic, but it is brilliantly filmed and its narrative is ingeniously written (told in a backwards form, furthering the requirement of the audience to understand and embrace its cautionary implications). Double dare you not to blink.

Wow, that was intense

If you like people like Fyodor Dostoevsky, Marcel Duchamp, Friedrich Nietzsche, Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon (the painter), then watch this film. If you don't know who these people are stop reading right now and go click on something else.
This movie is a gem. This movie is a perfectly constructed machine. Its an hour glass. You can watch it backwards or forwards. And Monica Bellucci is beautiful and stunning and so utterly vulnerable. One of her best roles ever. (I've seen nearly everything she's in).
I have to talk about Monica a little more here because this movie's gotten a lot of flack for the scene where she's violated, but Monica more than overpowers that scene in two other scenes: one where she's dancing with the other girls in the dark room, and second in the conversation about sex with her current boyfriend and former boyfriend. That is one riveting conversation. (I was talking about this film with a friend later and she said that conversation changed her life).
But let me come back to thematic unity. Once you've finished watching the movie you will be forced to think about how perfectly the idea of the film -- going backwards -- works with each and every scene. And you'll realize that even the violent rape in the middle is connected to this theme. Having said that, I wish I had watched this movie backwards, which is to say, forwards. Can't handle that paradox? Get out of here.
I had never before seen any films by Gaspar Noe. And now I intend on watching everything he's ever made.

Normally a fan of abnormal plots, and unscathed by extremely violent films such as this one I was very excited to see this movie regardless of other not so great reviews I had read. Sadly I was forced to turn it off after only the first half hour not because of the graphic violence but because not only did I feel no connection to any of the characters, but the camera twitching and swirling around for thirty minutes made me feel nausea before I had a chance to be engaged. I watch a lot of movies, and a lot of genres, and have only ever turned off three films before the end because I found the so insufferable. I obviously cannot speak for the whole movie, so if you are a fan of shoty camera work in the name of art by all means give it a try. But word to the wise, watch the preview first, if you think the camera moves around too much because it's a preview beware and be prepared to endure this throughout the film.

Phenomenal and jaw-dropping film that grips you on the edge of your seat, Irrevesible is a must-see! However, this movie is most-definitely not for those prone to seizures or motion-sickness. Noe does an excellent job directing, taking keen detail to every scene. All actors are exceptional, with the audience becoming completely engrossed in the reverse-linear narrative. One must note, with an extreme amount of violence and hardcore sexual scenes (i.e., rape) Irreversible is not for the queasy.

As a film, it is effective, shocking, and masterfully made. I don't believe anybody could walk out of it thinking that they should take up violence against women "as an Olympic sport" - if anything, it encourages one to hold tightly to their beloved, fully aware and awake to the world that IS around us all the time, whether that refers to the brutality of rape (not at all gratuitous, but definitely disturbing for its realism), or a nice day in the park. If "Ever After" is your favorite feminist movie, then this film is not for you, but make no mistake - the filmmaker has something to say and does it well; no happy ending required. It is not pro-violence, and it is not anti-woman, and if you're sickened by the violence and ready to speak up for women after seeing the film, then hasn't it done it's job?

Stop moving the camera.

It is almost as if they strapped the camera to a dog and just let it run around the set. The camera angles have no point it just moves around all the time. Some may call this artsy but i find that it adds nothing but a distraction. The background noise is also very annoying. I could not follow this film for all the distractions from the amateur "I'm going to be edgy" film making. There is some deplorable violence and sex and such i get where the director is going with that but the idea is not executed well and it is just hard to watch. What a horrible film.

Vincent Cassel probably the most charismatic male actor in the last 30 years. Intense and not weak like most modern cinema.
Monica Bellucci is in one of her best roles. Look our for Cassel in Black Swan with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. He supposedly steals the movie away from 4 women in a movie about ballet. Don't miss if you like real life shown in movies instead of vanilla lala stories.

This has to be the worst movie I have ever seen in my 59 years! If you only had to endure the endless camera rotation and constant movement through scenery that can't even be identified, I'd say this movie will make you sick! Literally. It has the tendency to make the viewer seasick because of the photography, but that isn't the worst part of it.
The theme of "Irreversible" is that it actually shows the plot of the movie in reverse. So when you see the final act of the movie first, it makes it very difficult follow the story. Which brings me to the biggest complaint I have of this movie, i.e. the foul language, the graphic violence and sexual abuse depicted go beyond art and border on being a "snuff" film. This movie is so pathetic, the subtitles aren't even accurate translations from French to English, but there are even spelling and typo errors. I've seen better grammar used on a Closed Captioned TV show.
For all of the reviewers who give this film 5 stars, I would do some serious evaluation of your personal values and seek counseling! I've read several reviews that try and excuse the violence as a "representation of what takes place in the real world", but I think this goes beyond art or documentary. It definitely isn't entertaining.

what it's like being wasted and inside a hard-core gay club, this movie captures the emotion of the moment and injects a bit more of the twisted lifestyle than you can imagine. And that's only one scene! The scene in the tunnel is just beyond brutal.
I'll say this much about IRREVERSIBLE:
you'll never be the same after watching it, so let the viewer beware.
Personally? This was a "must-buy" for my collection, and has been listed as one of the most horrifying movies to ever have been filmed.
And that's what I want out of a movie. An "irreversible" series of moments.

On the one hand, this movie is a brilliant depiction of real life violence and primitive natures. It epitomizes on so many levels just how extreme humans can be and for reasons that cannot be justified. It truly made me sick and scared to think about my wife or children being in that kind of situation and helpless. We all have a root knowledge of how cruel the world can be but this movie slaps you in the face with it.
On the other hand, this movie is an example of how we as humans have evolved in what we demand from entertainment. Imagine this movie being played in the 60's. It's unfortunate that we have grown as a society that wants to see this. I don't personally believe that I needed to watch this movie to see through the eyes of the victim because ultimately it leaves you with no control.
The director accomplished his goal without a doubt. I just wish that he would have focused all of his energy and passion for pointing out the cruelty of human nature into something that would actually have made a difference.
Finally, I want to point out that I have rated this movie low. But I think it's important to give credit to the actors in this film who made me believe that it was real. I have no doubt that this film changed their lives.

I applaud the daring filmmaking of Gasper Noe, as this film was equally hard to watch and hard to look away from. It's brutality is portrayed unspectacularly, yet completely unflinching. As gripping as it all is, it's hard to recommend a film that really should be seen as art in the context of film. The story, told in reverse, seems to lack a climax that the rest of the film seems to warrant, yet in this mode of story-telling there is really no huge revelation that leaves you feeling satisfied but I understand that is not the point or intention of this film. I can't say I would recommend it to most people but as a film worth recommending to the untrained viewer, I would say be prepared. This film will stay with you for a day or two after, if not longer.

You have to watch this movie although you're standing in an art gallery. It's not something you can compare to the films you go see on dates.
I feel bad for giving it such a low rating but it put me in a very sad mood...but I guess the point isn't to leave you will a good feeling, it's to emotionally rattle you while you sit and watch.

When this movie was first screened at the Cannes film festival, about half of the audience walked out after the first 30 minutes (according to Roger Ebert whose review is worth reading). Not because it was a bad film, but because it is brutal and disturbing. But get past those first thirty minutes as the film is really worth your time and it's well done.
Like the better known film Memento (dir by Chris Nolan two years before this film was released), this story is told backwards. It shares a similar topic as well--revenge for the bestial destruction of a lover's life. I won't spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it, although it's not really a suspense film and its subject matter is well known. A beautiful girl leaves a party alone and is raped violently. The director chooses to tell the tale backwards so that you begin with the consequences of that rape--her lover's revenge--and ascend to the sweet and innocent moments that will never be regained. You the viewer watch those tender moments between lovers already knowing what they don't, magnifying the feeling of loss they are destined for. How many of us after experiencing something traumatic retrace our steps to find the good moments that preceded a tragedy and transformed us as a result.
I'll never watch it again, however. Both the rape and revenge scenes are terrifyingly brutal and will make you want to slap anyone who makes a joke about rape ever again in your presence. Really brilliant, bold film.
Vincent Cassel (who is always first rate, known for his film Eastern Promises and most recently Mesrine: Public Enemy No.1, the best film I've seen ==Part 1, Killer Instinct--in years) plays the avenger and his wife at the time, Monica Belluci, plays his lover).

Violence and intensity are not substitutes for decent film-making and acting. For the first third of the movie the camera appears to be in the hands of a drunk five-year old. It also depicts gay sex as the behavior of the deepest pits of hell. The only good thing about it is that the dialogue is in French. If English speakers were saying these lines, you couldn't stand it. If you want to watch an edgy, violent movie that is good, watch romper stomper. Yes, you see a lot of the actresses fantastic breasts, but it's just not worth it, in light of the disturbing un-plot. The simplistic story really belongs in an indy graphic novel - like the twisted origins of a "dirty harry" or "daredevil" or somebody.

This movie represents an intense portrayal of the ever present horror of the human predicament. It usually doesn't present itself as graphically as in this movie, but it happens to all of us eventually (and the writer/producer only had 90 minutes in which to do so). I couldn't help noticing that many extras portrayed this existential devolution of life; it was at the same time ingenious to have the characters do so anacronistically. Some suffer from within; some from without. The terrifying irony pierces your heart as you realize the role reversal of the protagonists. It could happen to you. It could happen be me. How can any of us predict how we will respond when life delivers us her promise. Some lose their soul early and die slowly. Others have shining souls which are lost in a day and die painfully and quickly.
I certainly understand those who could not handle their emotions during the first half, we're not all made the same way. For those who criticized the arts of this movie; this movie was made just for you.

I hesitated to watch this with all the reviews of how violent and terrible it is. Truthfully they are only two bad scenes. The fire extinguisher being smashed into a mans face and the infamous subway scene which is very had to watch but those 2 scenes are so disturbing and incredibly realistic it made me feel as if I was watching a documentary of the most brutal parts of human nature. This is not like any other movie out there with violence and rape because the camera does not stop but instead runs the entire time for every scene so that it really makes one feel that what they are watching is 100 percent real. Aside from that being said this movie is brilliant and one that if you can handle it you shouldnt miss!

As other reviewers wrote already - this movie is extremely violent, with very long, very explicit scenes of violence (beating to death and rape).
I don't understand how this movie could get nominated to anything connected to art - mostly because of the length of these violent scenes.
Please note also that this movie isn't in English - it's in French (partially in Spanish) with English subtitles.
The camera movement made me also a little dizzy, most of all at the beginning of the movie.
Monica Bellucci however is always worth to be watched - simply beautiful!

I am a big fan of foreign movies. But every once in a while I come across one that is horrifically bad. This is one of them. The camera work in this movie is psychotic. The violence is senseless, the sex is not appealing. The acting is mediocre for most of the characters. Very possibly not due to inaptness by the actors but bad directing and/or a terrible screen play. There is no lesson in this movie, no moral note, nothing to take away after having seen it.

The movie is in French, with English subtitles. Cinematically it's a mess and failed to achieve the anachronistic affect using a sequence of rotating, out-of-focus and uncut camera shots accompanied by an irritating, over the top soundtrack. If Gaspar Noé was seeking to push viewing violence beyond uncomfortable to the level of human intolerance, he failed miserably. Instead, Noé simply annoys and offends with redundant dialogue and ill-constructed plot in which dialogue and actions of his inane characters outstrip credulity. From the opening scene (killing the wrong villain) to the concluding vignette (the sterile and unconvincing relationship between Marcus and Alex), Irreversible is probably the most misguided and sophomoric movie since Ishtar, setting new lows in quality of movie script, direction and production. Your time and money will be Irreversible wasted; there are more substantive movies which portray homophobia, violence, revenge and misogyny. This movie misses the mark!

I read some of the reviews and I had a pretty good understanding what I was about to watch, I didn't have any problems with the issues and scenes in this movie, but because of the way the camera's were used in this film the begining almost made me dizzy. Thru life you are taught/trained to keep one thing in perspective with your view of sight, this movie does not allow that, the camera is constatly moving which makes it difficult to follow the movie visually, as for the story line, I have seen many videos that do the backward story telling (starting with the end) I know CSI did this and I believe NCIS did an episode in this fashion, so the way this film was made is no stranger to me, but the way they broke up the segments it was fairly difficult to follow from end to begining. I would certainly recomend renting this movie before purchasing... I certainly wish I had.

Brilliantly produced in every aspect, it can be pretty hard for most people to watch this film but if you want a raw , gripping story line with superb videography then this film is it. It also go banded in many countries because of the content. Awesome - A MUST WATCH, PS if you love this film watch NIll By Mouth

But I laugh at those who find it too "brutal" or "shocking" there is much worse out there, Sure it a long rape scene, with an unhappy finish. But this stuff really happens everyday somewhere in the world, and since most of you are probably atleast 18+ I don't understand being shocked by it, what planet have you been on that you haven't seen some ultra-violence up close and personal, cause I want to move there.
(after re-reading I noticed that some might take this to mean I don't mind the ultra-violence and movies like it such as "Clockwork Orange" Nothing can be further from the truth, me no like rape/murder/hate/racism/poverty ect.. thought I would clarify since I'm not one to go back and edit.)

Irreversible Review

Look at the difference between American Cinema and French Cinema as riding on a slow roller-coaster riding, and than fighting for your life in an actual war; Irreversible lacks a lot of the taste and direction that most audiences are used to, so most people won't understand the movie until they've understood themselves.
The trick with the movie is to look at what happens in the first few moments in the film, as the last. The other trick is to know that no matter what happens towards the closing of the film, the killer in the first five minutes has made a mistake, and subbcumbs to the same darkness that took his girlfriends innocence at the films conclusion. Overall, this is an excellent movie that is highly overrated due to its shock value, but nonetheless important because of the grotesque moral challenges it offers. I'd recommend this film particularly to those who know that what occurs in cinema is fake.
As you journey through this film, you too will make the chilling discovery that rage ... leads to mistakes, and they're irreversible.

I can't believe iTunes has this movie....

I haven't seen the iTunes version of this movie, but I trust it's in good quality if it's past 1 GB. The only thing deterring me from buying it is that iTunes mentions it's in English (I hope those are the subs?)
As for the film: amazing, amazing, amazing. Truly a beautiful work. Definitely not for everyone, but its hyper violence purposefully sticks with you for months after watching. I've seen it about 3 times and every time I'm just mesmerized by the stark cinematography, the poetry imbued - I can't recommend this movie enough. If there's a movie that brings out the strongest emotions from you, it's "Irreversible."

Great Movie!

There's a tendency in American movies to glamorize violence. Europeans don't do that and by doing so, they are able to convey more human emotion in movie on a level that US filmakers can only dream of. The evokes the technical filmaking as done in "Memento" and does an excellent character portrayal akin to "The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover." It's raw... it's provoking... it's done so well that US viewer will find it rare. ;)
Vincent Cassel and Monica Belucci (spelling?) are great and believable.
Enjoy... but it's not for the squeamish, but make 'em watch anyway!

Vibrantly directed, amazing use of dark colors and a haunting ability to never turn the camera away from the most grotesque of mankinds acts makes this movie a triumph of direction, creativity, and powerful storytelling.

My wife worked at a video rental place and when this movie came out, so many people complained about how graphic it was they took it off the shelf. We watched it and I thought it was a masterpiece. So many cheezy movies out there it was nice to see a hardcore piece of art. The world we live in is violent and those who have money to hide inside your homes and pretend life is like reality shows, I recommend Americas Top Model or Dancing with The Stars!!!

if you must...

watch this film, do so with caution. as the other post states, i too saw this in the theatre and we left half way through. this is one of the most violent films i have ever seen, and hope to ever see. i can stomach most disturbing films, but this one i cannot. i later rented this film on sheer curiosity. i fast forwarded through the unviewable, then made it to the end. it really does not let go of you no matter the ending. viewer beware.
