Description

Based on the best selling novel by Thomas Harris, "Hannibal" continues the story begun in "The Silence of the Lambs." Seven years have passed since Dr. Hannibal Lecter escaped from custody, seven years since FBI Agent Clarice Starling interviewed him in a maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane. The doctor is now at large in Italy, pursuing his own interests, savoring the scents, the essences of the unguarded world. But Starling has never forgotten her encounters with Dr. Lecter – his seldom-used voice still haunts her dreams. Mason Verger remembers Dr. Lecter as well, and is obsessed with revenge. Verger was Dr. Lecter’s sixth victim, and although hideously disfigured, he survived. In order to draw Dr. Lecter into the open, Verger uses Clarice Starling as bait.

I loved how Dr. Lecter just plans ahead. The Psychological Horror appeals to the mind, even though he is never the antagonist.

The actor is a pathetic excuse for starling! No hate on the actor herself but u can't replace starling and her southern yet hardcore city vibe.

Bought this movie for 9.99 no HD version was available. Now I'd have to pay another 14.99 if I want the HD version. Typical Apple! Why don't upgrade to HD version if you bought the best quality at the time.

Like so many others I have watched and own all of the Hannibal movies. But this is the rare case wherein the best of the bizarre came together and transcends the evil and becomes art. Not horror but horrific. Pure Genius and a classic for all time.

A Ridley Scott Film. Wonderful.

I really don’t understand why people have so much venom for this movie. I thought that having Ridley Scott direct this move was a stroke of genius and I was very excited about the end result.
When I saw it in the theatre, I was of the opinion that it was almost as good and Silence of the Lamb and couldn’t have been happier so I was literally shocked when the reviews came in and they were just medium level.
I think the film is visually rich with detail. I loved the book even more because you could tell Thomas Harris well thought out plans with this book and the detail he and Ridley Scott brought were wonderful.
I think this film is highly underrated. This film ranks in the top 25 of my all time favorites.

I don't know what is wrong with these critics. This movie was amazing. Anthony Hopkins was at his best, Gary Oldman was better, and the story was sublime. My only complaint is that it did not follow the book as it should-but I got over it. I think I will write a review of the "Top Critics Reviews" instead. Here goes: "Hopelessly short-sighted attempts to wrap their heads around impeccable acting and a quality screenplay. These critics should go back to movie school or wherever they go to to learn their useless trade. Just Terrible."
This movie is worth the buy.

Making a sequel to a very brilliant film that one best picture is usually never a good idea. It's okay for superhero movies to get sequels but not this.
The thing that saves this movie from being a complete disaster is Hopkins. Pretty much the best actor in this entire movie.
Julianne Moore replaces Jodie Foster as Clarice. Ms. Moore is a great actress, I mean just look at Boogie Nights, but as Clarice, I don't know, she took the role that was made famous by Foster and pretty much just does an impression. She's so much better than that.
When you see that Ridley Scott directed it, you want to like it better, but you just don't. This is not Scott's finest moment. This film is blatant evidence of a money grab because the first film is such a masterpiece.
This is not a masterpiece, this is just a slow movie and you don't care about the characters like you did in the first one. One of those movies that just falls flat. Unfortunately

I am bothered by julianne moors performance. I don't dislike her as an actor, but Jodie Foster is the only real Clarice. All in all this wasn't horrible. I felt my stomach turn when Liotta had Hannibal over for dinner….or Hannibal had Liotta for dinner.
It was more visceral than cerebral….no pun intended.
Not nearly as good Silence but its always enjoyable to see Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal.

I watched the movie , and decided to read the book. After I read the book i went back and watched this again. A lot of parts are cut out and the ending ?! aggravating . The movie could have been better , but overall it was good. I just really wished it was more like the book :/

Best movie ever.

I thought the book was bad and then this version came out. Ironically the section of the book I disliked most (the entire Vienne sequence) was actually the only part of the movie I enjoyed, but it just got more ridiculous from that poiny onward. Julianne Moore is no Jodie Foster. Ridley Scott once again proves that he is by no definition an "intellectual' filmmaker and is really only concerned with pretty images . The best moment comes at the end---it gave me a queasy chuckle, but there is nothing worth checking out. Go back and either the original Man Hunter or Silence of the Lambs and pass this piece of junk.

I can't understand why this movie has recieved only 39% of "fresh" tomatoes from critics. This is my favorite movie by far. Dr. Hannibal Lecter's cunning intelligence, personality, and lifestyle give this movie a true sense of mystery, suspense, and bone-chilling moments and very memorable quotes. Not only does this movie have the key elements of suspense, horror, and mystery, there is also plenty of action, and even gruesome humor concocted from the devilish head of Hannibal. Every minute of this movie leaves you biting at your fingernails until theres nothing left on either hand, and leaves you wondering what will happen next. This movie recieves five stars as it should from anyone who watches it. Not one part of this movie will leave you wondering when it will be over, I couldn't even put it on pause! Enjoy!

This movie falls into the same category as most sequels do. They pale in comparison to the original. Though there were some good aspects of the film, such as introducing some fresh new characters....thank you Mr. Oldman......, and introducing a foreign land, those in themselves just could not hold the movie up to the same caliber as "Silence of the Lambs". I would recommend as a rental for someone who "needs" to see what happens to poor "Hannibal", or to someone who just can't seem to find anything else to rent. I cannot recommend to purchase however.

i have all the Lecter movies as i like to think of them, and they are all decent... Hannibal Rising being the weakest in my opinion. My only gripe is that Jodie Foster didn't reprise her role as Starling in the sequels. I can't stand Julianne Moore at all as Starling, she's so clumsy, whining and lame. Silence Of The Lambs is a masterpiece, but they are all worth having. The ending dinner sequence alone makes this worth having, it's just so insane... comical in the darkest sense of morbid humor.

Thankfully, I watched the movies before i read the book, so I just loved Hannibal. But now that I've read the books, I must admit I'm a little mad at the ending. They got the ending all wrong, and to top it all off, they replaced Clarice Starling's original actress. Other than that, it was pretty good. This movie was not as suspensful as Silence, but instead was more romantic. Either way, I highly recommend 'Hannibal.'

It's so different from its predecessor Silence of the Lambs, yet it is equally engrossing. It's dark comedy driven by suspense, and it delves into the love story between good and evil. I can't speak highly enough about how thrilling this is to watch!

I was a bit put off by this film. I was pleased to know that Anthony Hopkins was still the same actor, but Clarice Starling should have stayed the same too. Hannibal Lecter was portrayed as a too violent cannibal in this film, which is not what he was like in Silence of the Lambs. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE (!!!) Hannibal but value him more for his cunning mind games. He will twist your thoughts and make you do whatever you want him to do, and if you try to match wits with him, you will only fall victim to his "insanity." I did not get the same vibes here. For the films redeeming points, it focused more on the cannibalism aspect of Hannibal Lecter, which was good, but it seemed to take away from his true character.

Definitly not as good as the first.

'Hannibal' is nothing like 'Silence of the Lambs'. That's the first thing to remember: 'Hannibal' is not a suspense film and is, in my opinion, only for those fans who wish to see more of the characters. With that out of the way, 'Hannibal' is an intriguing, good-looking and probably slightly unnecessary follow-up to 'Silence'. Clarice Starling (later, 'ex Special Agent' Starling) finds herself back on Hannibal's case - and back in his thoughts. Someone new is out to kill Hannibal, now a free man living in disguise, and the FBI (at least, certain persons in it) are out to use Clarice as its scapegoat. The plot, however, is nowhere near as taut as in 'Silence' and the very film style suggests that this film is a departure from its predecesser. The music is different, the tone is different, there are new writers and directors, and, most notably to a casual viewer, a new Clarice. If you're looking for another psychological thriller, 'Red Dragon' is the way to go. If you just want more of Dr. Lecter - and don't mind that the film is covering completely new territory - then 'Hannibal' is a must-see.

Great Thriller

But overall doesn't rank up to the multi- Acadamy Award Winning original. I've seen all 4 hannibal (excluding Michael Mann's movie) movies this was actually very well made. After all it's actually directed by Ridley Scott who directed very well made movies such as Gladiator, American Gangster & Alien all of which I've seen. Gladiator ranks to be his best movie ever. Still a good movie with a mind blowing performance by Julian Moore and Anthony Hopkins.

I have to say, this is a Ridley Scott's failure film. Obviously, it is a parody work. More, it is worse than another movie «Red Dragon». Julianne Moore's acting is not bad, but the role Clarice Starling is only suitable for Judie Foster. Anthony Hopkins exhausted his full-length power for this movie is also difficult to won. The overplayed of blood and thriller made the film lost the farsighted marrow and wisdom which in the first movie.
