Description

In medieval times, a youthful pickpocket befriends a strange knight who is on a mysterious quest. This unlikely duo, accompanied by a watchful hawk, are enveloped in a magical adventure. Matthew Broderick ("The Freshman," "Glory"), Academy Award-nominee Michelle Pfeiffer ("Batman Returns," "Dangerous Minds") and Rutger Hauer ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Blade Runner") star in this medieval romantic adventure, nominated for two Academy Awards. Co-starring John Wood ("Sabrina"). Produced and directed by Richard Donner ("Maverick," "Superman"), Siskel & Ebert call this "fabulous... a magically wonderful movie... a real classic!" The Los Angeles Times says it "soars... it's enchanted, enthralling, marvelous; a bold, beautiful vision" and Gene Shalit calls it "amazing... a double popcorn picture that casts a spell, which is why 'Ladyhawke' spells pleasure."

Ladyhawke itself is a great movie. This is a ghastly print that looks like it was printed straight from a VHS tape—poor resolution, panned and scanned to the old NTSD 4:3 aspect ratio... just awful.

This is an amazingly fun movie that I've loved for years. Too bad about the horrible full-screen, pan-and-scan copy. Wish I could return it. I have seen high-quality, letterboxed versions, so I know they exist. I was looking forward to watching it but was severely dissapointed.

We're is the widescreen and HD version? I like this movie but not in full screen. So I'm not giving a full screen version 5 stars.

Decent movie ruined by presentation.

This is a good movie with some nice performances (the prog rock passages in the music score doesn’t really work, but it at least the filmmakers tried something different), but unfortunately the 4:3 pan-and-scan transfer that iTunes has is completely unwatchable in today’s day and age.

Please make the HD version available

i must point out for all you who dont enjoy the music--all music in this soundtrack was composed by Alan Parsons, who was famous for his progressive techno rock musical techniques. He has produced many great albums that i have grown up to and the music makes the movie unique from all other adventure movies with the typical orchestrations. to do the music justice even more, it is 50 dollars on ebay because it is a rare piece of Alan Parsons career that unfortunately went out of production in the 90s. if you dont like music to this movie then stick to the not-unique mainstream soundtrack movies!! LadyHawke is awesome and they should bring back the soundtrack.

I really enjoyed this movie but the music doesn't fit the story and I find it annoying. Worth watching though!

I love this movie. I love it so much my now 22 year old son is named Neville, captain of the guard. This is an excellent example of a love story, sword/sorceror, good vs. evil movie. Have purchased several copies of it over the years.

I just watched this for the first time expecting it to be another campy 80's fantasy. I couldnt have been more wrong! This is a powerful story that makes you believe in true love all over again! All the actors are great, especially Matthew Broderick. He's actually pretty hilarious as the pickpocket who gets caught up in the adventure. The scenery is downright breathtaking and the action scenes are fun and exciting. This might just be my new favorite movie. Watch it now!

Gorgeous actors, great action, good storyline - what more do you want?

Back in the days when I was young...and so was the most incredibly beautiful Rutger Hauer... this was my very favorite movie. I saw Michelle Pfeiffer for the first time and thought she must be the best looking woman in movies, and eternally young Matthew Broderick was a perfect generally optimistic/opertunistic pickpocket. It begins with lively, totally inappropriate music that I really liked and entered into a love story by way of a nasty prison escape.
"Nothing is impossible", chants Mouse the Pickpocket as he squeezes his way through sewer pipes in his bid for freedom. John Wood is the villian of the film as the evil Bishop of Aquila, followed closely by (I think) John Hutchenson as the new Captain of the Guard. The final major fight scene alone, in the church with the "great horses" riden by Navaare and his arch-enemy, is worth seeing the movie. Heart touching is the scene where Navaare barely catches a glimpse of Isabeau just as she changes into the hawk, their fingers just inches apart. Made me cry then, and usually again when I see the movie now.
Not to belabor the subject, but those of you who see Hauer now (OMG) have no idea of what he was 30 years ago. He was never a great actor by any stretch of the imagination but he was absolutely lovely, which is how he got parts in movies to start with. Pfeiffer, also a knockout, was a good actor then and remains so today. Broderick always plays Broderick so who knows. Regardless, the supporting cast is fairly good, there are some spooky moments, great action, and that perfectily wonderful final scene in the church.
Buy, rent, whatever. This is one worth seeing over and over again.

SOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the movie! it's a mix of love and laughter. I just loved the part where Mouse said: "I'm sorry to disappoint you lord,
but I know that you know what a weak-willed person I am." Ha Ha Ha! That's a funny part! There's not a lot of funny parts in the movie, but there's a few. (I hope this reveiw was helpful to anyone who wants to buy the movie. If anyone does buy
the movie, I hope they enjoy it as much as I did!)

This is indeed one of my all time favorite films. It has it all: action, adventure, fantasy, love, and above all Michelle Pfeiffer at her best.

I was 21 when the movie came out and I remember seeing it with my g/f. The story was amazing and seeing it after all those years brought back a lot of good memories.
What I don't understand, however, is why people say the music is dated? The movie is from 1985 and the music is obviously from... 1985. Excuse me, but if you're watching "The Graduate", "Grease" or "Hair" do you dislike it because the music in it isn't what people listen to nowadays? Just enjoy it!

Technical issues: this is a TV cut of the film--it's not widescreen--and I question the transfer a little bit too. That having been said, it's still a good watch, and Matthew Broderick is great--he's got some acting skills that often get overlooked, that are very much on display here. The script certainly has its implausible moments, but you forgive that given just how imaginative the story is.

The story and theme of Ladyhawke has haunted me since I first saw the movie. It is a beautiful story with talented actors. Yes, the music score could be better but it represents the time the movie was made. Give the movie a look and it may touch you at the very core the way it did me.

Yes, the music is dated. The musical themes are still timeless, but I sure wish they'd redo the score with real orchestration--rather than the experimental, new-at-the-time electronic stuff. The ending is still one of the most moving and beautiful moments in cimema history. Watch it with your cheese filter on, and you'll have a wonderful, memorable experience.

not nearly so good as i remember it

in fact, much of the acting and direction is terrible, and the music throughout is dated. the three stars i'm giving it are almost entirely for the story itself, which remains great.

This movie has been one of my favorites since I first saw it in theater. The acting is great and the action is good, but that is not where the heart of this movie lies. It is instead within the love of Navarre and Isabeau. Cursed to live their lives forever together, but eternally apart, the couples love for each other shines through with the light of the sun. It is one of the best love stories I have ever seen and to this day it brings a smile to my face. Just get it!

This movie came out the year I was born, my mother intorduced me to it. Still the best romance I have ever seen. Its got the action in it that I love in a movie, but still has a really sweet love story to it as well. "Together Forever, Eternally Apart."

This movie came out the year my husband and I were married, I was enchanted and watched the movie over and over again as I worked in a movie theater to pay for college. What a lovely combination of characters and the story was so romantic. I still watch my VHS but will now carry the Ipod version wherever I go. I think I loved that beautiful Friesian horse almost as much as Rutger!
