Description

Ben Affleck is ready for action, commanding the role of CIA agent Jack Ryan in this thrilling adventure based on the Tom Clancy bestseller. America's Cold War fears are rekindled after the President of Russia dies and is succeeded by a man with a cryptic past. But East-West tensions erupt when the CIA suspects that renegade Russian scientists are developing more nuclear weapons. Mobilized into action by CIA Director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman), Jack Ryan (Affleck) follows a danger-ridden trail to a shocking conclusion: terrorists plan to provoke a war between the U.S. and Russia - by detonating a nuclear bomb at a championship football game! Costarring James Cromwell and Liev Schreiber, The Sum of All Fears adds up to the year's most explosive entertainment.

The book was great. This movie title should be THE NAZIS OF ALL FEARS. This is completely ridiculous, the real threat to national security is Islamic extremists, the way the book is.

What a combination of actors. Along with all the Liberals in Hollywood, I was surprised in the movie they did not claim the bad guys were caused by Global Warming. Dreadful acting, horrible Politically Correct storyline, oh, oh, we cannot offend the Muslim Terrorist. So, they picked a villain from the 1930’s-40’s. Yeah, real believable in todays crazy world. ZERO STARS!!! WASTE OF MONEY!!!

Please don’t compare this to the book

This movie, in Hollywood’s passion to be politically correct, was nearly ruined but for the story line they finally adopted, about a plot of a neo-Nazi extremist group that finds, rebuilds, and detonates a nuclear weapon in the United States to set this country and Russia on a collision course for World War III. As implausible as this plot is (what kind of world would the neo-Nazis inherit after the entire biosphere would be forever poisoned by the radioactive fallout and weapon debris?), it manages to pull the plot out of the the fire in what is a mere shadow of the story and issues of the Clancy book.
Nonetheless, it manages to be a very scary story with very, very real warnings of a clear and present danger to the United States as every terrorist group is hoping to find enough fissile material to build a few real nuclear weapons and set them off in cities all over the US., and at high altitude of the center of the nation, so that the U.S. is effectively destroyed, its electronic infrastructure and military burned out from the Electromagnetic Pulse which is intended to make the U.S. a nineteen-century nation, forever incapable of ever resisting Islamofascist intentions.
An excellent movie despite the many flaws and implausibilities of the script. Hollywood trash, saved by great acting and cast selection. This movie should stand as a warning to Americans of one possible future — closer to reality than you could ever imagine.

Great plot, suspense, action!

I thought this movie was exciting and fun to watch, it seems everybody is comparing this to the Harrison Ford movies which he also plays Jack Ryan and IMO is way better.
It's a bit slow the first 30 minutes but picks up the rest of the wy through.

Tom Clancy writing is spot on & it's scary that the subject matter is totally plausible. Ready the nukes, whoever has the largest guns, dictate the terms!

Terrible, false and just another "Homeland/Fatherland" security commercial. Glorifies twisted notions of patriotism and to make 30 yr old 1.99 radioshack spy gadgets and the people who worship them look supernatural- what a joke! I feel sorry for people who watch this who think the characters are cool or even worse the people who vicariously want to be like them and need the false emotions in this film...

Morgan Freeman and Ben Affleck are great. The movie itself is good, but a top notch film. Affleck wasn't quite as good as Harrison Ford at playing Jack Ryan, but it was a good movie anyway.

I honestly think that if a neo Nazi got hold of a nuke he wouldn't set it off in the US. I really think he would set it off in Russia, because culturally germans hate Russians, and a neo Nazi would be even more fanatical from the outcome of WW2. Sure everyone gives credit to the allies with Dday but Germany really lost to Russia. PC in hollywood ruined this movie, because a neo Nazi is after all, the most likely person to set of a nuke in America. That idea wouldn't ever cross the mind of an Islamic nutjob. UPDATE
I forgot to say this, but you could compare the Nazi Muslim flip flop to if the starred Nazis as the villains in a remake of black hawk down.

DOWN WITH BEN AFFLECK!

Seriously why do they even let him act!?!? Letting Ben Affleck star in a Tom Clancy movie is like pushing George Washinton off a cliff and then flinging the Constitution into a furnace. IT SHOULD BE TREASON!
Worst Clancy movie, and it's sad because the book was good.

This movie is so far off from the book it is unbelievable. I know movies based on books are not a perfect copy of the book, but this film has only two common things with the book. A terrorist attack on U.S. soil and Jack Ryan is a main character. The book is a million times better than this disaster of a movie. This movie is the reason why Tom Clancy won't allow his books to be made into movies anymore.

the story seems fascinating but a nuke on a jet fighter.they use oil and if by some freak, of nature the us and uss did go into conflict with full total nuclear war no one will be left. the fallout that is based on scientific studies would make a vey very unhospitable planet.global massextinction. the rest would be horribly dying through the lack of food and radiation.

"The Sum of All Fears" has a great plot and premise, but ultimately falls short of world-beater status as an action movie. The acting is superb, and cinematography is top-notch. However, the tremendous overdose of profanity takes away some from the film, and several scenes don't add a thing to the movie and slow down the high-octane plot. Intrigue, though, is very prevalent and saves the film in the end with great conspiracy theories and plot twists. Don't miss the little-known second verse to the national anthem in the middle of the film (incredible) and "Nessun Dorma" to close the film with a bang, literally. All in all, a decent movie in need of better dialogue.

Nothing to do with the book...

This movie has nothing to do with the book it is named after. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan books are written in a timeline that has history and refrence. This movie ignores all of that.
I really hate Ben Affleck as an actor: He is just too whinny for me. I like a leading man to be a leading man. Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Robert Reddford, Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro... there is no whinning in being a leading man.
This movie would have been much better if it were renamed, and all refrence to Jack Ryan and the Clancy books were removed. As a stand alone, I would have given it three stars because the production is not bad. Affleck is just not enough of a man to command this role.

Of course...

The book is going to be better. They always are, but this film is very entertaining to say the least. You can put all the detail that you want into a book but not a movie. Also, If a movie strays off the path of source material drastically it doesn't mean that it's bad. In short, don't always expect things to go directly on the line of a book. That's why it says based on... Give it a rent it's good trust me.

This movie would have been much better had the people involved kept the original book intent. Rewriting the whole plot to avoid offending Muslims was a total cop out. Hollywood never seems to mind offending Christians. Too bad political correctness managed to make this movie less than half of what it could have been. Please, read the book. It is wonderful, though not Clancy's best work. This movie, I suppose if you just need to see something, but like V for Vendetta the political agenda spoils what could have been a good thing. Sigh...

Shows us what could happen.

I enjoyed this film until it turned into a replay of War Games. Then it was predictable for the final 30-40 minutes. Maybe because the last 30-40 minutes were rushed, there was not enough time to make it interesting.

This movie had almost nothing to do with the actual story. There is very little in common, and even Jack Ryan has a different life story then in the books. I watched this movie right after reading the book (i am an avid Clancy reader) only to turn the TV off halfway through and go to bed because there was nothing in common with the book and it started to annoy me. If you want the real story, then get up and go to the library. Many of the characters are different, and it also claimes that Clancy was the executive producer in the opening credits. I have to say, i wonder how much of a role he actually played in the making of this film, because why would he make such a bad movie out of his own book (which was great, even by his standards) I would give it 1 star, but i gave it another for the book. I wouldn't watch it again, or even finish watching it. Egnough said?

I am a bigtime movie go-er and this is by far one of the best movies I've ever seen. The action, suspense, and drama make this a five star. The movie was confusing when I watched it the first time, but when I watched it the second time, I was able to follow everything. It was just amazing

 –

Yes, the most pressing threat we face today, is from NeoNazies getting a nuke.
Please, talk about PC gutting what was a good book and turning it into a silly movie. The left in Hollywood is so gutless about making a movie that shows where the real threat comes from that they have to retreat to the one acceptable bad guy, that being the Nazi.
Don't get me wrong, The Nazi is a great villian to see killed, but pretty much only if your film is based in the 30s and the 40s. To make one the villian of a modern era based film is to wimp out on showing who is most desiring of setting off an atomic bomb in an American city.

I have always been a fan of Tom Clancy's books and movies, but this movie was a disappointment. It lacks the realism and continuity Clancy fans have come to expect from movie versions of his books, and in fact it has little in common with the book. The acting appears amature for these powerful actors, and the story line is both unrealistic and disjointed. While no movie can really capture a book author's intent, this movie was way off the mark.
As if that weren't enough, the performances by the actors was the worst I've ever seen from normally excellent performers. The plot was so different from the book as to become unbelievable. Much of this can be attributed to changes made midproduction, in the wake of 9/11. Apparently these changes were intended to avoid offending certain political and ethnic groups, placing political correctness over quality, realism, and story continuity.
