Description
For years Brigadier General Francis Xavier Hummel, a decorated military hero, has petitioned the United States Government to honor his men who have lost their lives in service to their country during highly covert military operations by providing their families the same benefits and tributes due other war veterans. For years his efforts have been scorned. Now, angry and determined to seek justice, Hummel and a crack team of commandos seize control of Alcatraz Island, taking hostage a group of tourists. If reparations are not immediately forthcoming, Hummel plans to launch a battery of rockets charged with lethal V.X. poison gas on the San Francisco Bay Area. The city's only hope for survival is FBI chemical/biological weapons expert, Stanley Goodspeed, and a top-secret federal prisoner, John Patrick Mason, who also happens to be the only known convict to have escaped the island fortress. With the clock ticking, this unlikely and reluctant duo, escorted by a U.S. Navy Seal team, embark on a desperate bid to infiltrate the island and detoxify the weapons before disaster strikes.

Please note that this movie is pretty cliche but it’s the best cliche movie I’ve ever scene. The score is absolutely fitting for its atmosphere, and the acting is nearly flawless (minus a few Nicholas Cage moments).

One of my favorites. Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris and Michael Biehn make for a great edge of your seat thrill ride! The intro with Ed Harris is moving. His character's confliciting loyalties add an emotional angle to what could have been just another wam bam action movie.

While I very much enjoyed the movie, we had to stop watching as the excessive use of the F-word was offensive. I find such language unnecessary, callous and irresponsible in movies. I’d pay more for family-friendly or “made for TV" versions of shows like this, though.

This is a great film. One of my personal favorites. The action is great, it has some funny moments, and it and if it has Sean Connery and it is directed by micheal bay, it has to be good. Overal, superb film. i highly recomend. Now, whenever i play it on my ipod, or my laptop, it always has a spaz attack at around 45:00 like their was a scratch on the disc. If you know how to fix this please help me. Thank you.

Clever memorable dialogue, excellent believable acting, compelling unique plot, multiple realistic character developments, The Rock has it all. The only drawbacks are a lot of unnecessary foul language and a light sex scene that really didn't improve the movie at all. If you can overlook those minor shortcomings, get this movie!

This is probably the best action movie i have seen in a while! It is so different from any other movie!! There are many bloody and graphic scenes throughout, and foul language is used frequently. The main character also lives with his pregnant girlfriend. That being said, this movie has a lot of humor mixed in as well and is great for mature audiences!! Its definitely the ultimate military adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time!!

This movie has it all. Great performances, action, an awesome chase sequence, memorable dialog, the works. It feels 'smarter' than your average Michael Bay actioner, too. Connery and Harris really deliver, and even Cage is more than tolerable here. Some lesser-known but very-solid actors like Michael Biehn, John Spencer, William Forsythe, Tony Todd round out a great cast.

Not only does it have the very best of action anyone could like in a movie. But this movie has United States Marines Force Recon, Navy Seals, the FBI, and a British Inteligence Agent. A horrifying battle between the Seals and the Marines, with a Marine victory, shows the TRUE patriotism and love for his men and country that General Hummel has. Though when you delve deeper into the meaning and the screenplay, the greatest theme that manifests from this movie is Honor.

Michael Bay is, I think, an underrated director. The films he is known for (ARMAGEDDON, BAD BOYS, TRANSFORMERS) don't aspire to be more than they are (except for PEARL HARBOR, which was still okay). He just wants his audiences to be entertained, and, according to the reviews people write and the box office receipts for all of his films, he must be getting the job done. And, of all the films he's directed, I find THE ROCK to be the best. It's got all the usual Bay touches (brave military officers, always-moving camera, comedy strewn throughout), but it also rises above the usual material in his films. It gives us very well-developed characters, and the actors are excellent. If you want to watch a good popcorn movie, THE ROCK would be your best bet.

I saw this movie becuase it has both Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, two very talented actors. I was both astounded and extremely happy at the quality of the film I watched. With plot twists, excellent acting, suprisingly high budget FX and very good action scenes throughout. Watch this movie, you will not regret it. ALSO, how could I forget, Ed Harris is a VERY good villain, and does a good job of conveying both the emotions of his character and the manical aspect contained within. VERY GOOD! BUY IT NOW!!

Get ready for a fast-paced, high octane, action packed movie. Ed Harris is gutsy, strong and very believable in this patriotic movie with a simple message that tugs at your heart strings. Cage is witty and powerful as usual. Connery struts into the scene with his usual flare and machismo. Quoting Goldie Hawn's character in FIRST WIVES CLUB: "[sean connery] 300 years old and he's still a stud!"

The Rock was part one of Nicolas Cage's two summer action films the second being Con Air. Michael Bay does a terrific job bringing over the top action to the screen without making ot seem corny.... for the most part. As usual with Michael Bay films the cinematography is the best part of film. There are hardly and static shots in the film if any. Almost every scene no matter how simple it may be requaires an extravagent camera move. Top notch cinematography combined with the music of Hans Zimmer, and excellent editing make for one very visual stunning film. With practice Michael Bay could become the next Ridley Scott.

Not that Connery is anything short of a terrific actor, but this was one of Cage's best films, done before he lapsed into the trademark "deer in the headlights expression" period.
Two minutes into the movie, your pulse is going to be well above normal, and it will likely stay that way due to the alternation of suspense and action. Bruckheimer really shined in this movie, and even if the plot is a bit contrived, the personalities - if not the actions - of the characters stays believable enough to keep you glued to the screen. The bad guys are bad - but with the exception of a few disposable near-extras, you feel their anguish, even as you hope they're defeated.
