Description

Twenty years after their last holiday at a fading vacation resort, Sophie reflects on the rare time spent with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). At 11-years-old, as the world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Sophie’s recollections become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film.

Pretentious film school tripe

Thin on plot and characterization the film leans heavily on “artsy” film school level cinematography. It’s an idea that could have been put across in a fifteen minute short film, after an hour and a half you’re going to feel annoyed that you wasted your time.

A Payoff

Some may say slow, boring, or that nothing happens. You don’t need a film degree or a keen eye. There’s a lot happening here with very little dialogue.
This is a film about images, memory, the unspoken, and the search for an answer (which we may or may not get, depending on the viewer).
It’s not for everyone, and the payoff in the final five-ish minutes may leave you breathless (especially if you’ve experienced a similar loss).

Mind blowing!

This film does not have much dialogue. What this film has is two magnificent actors and a fierce plot. It will leave you disrupted. Mind blowing good! Paul Mescal see you at the Oscars.

It plays like a mediocre student film- meanderingly slow and boring. I have patience for quiet and plodding narratives but this goes nowhere. Save your time.

Art, not entertainment.

Appears to have been created to supplement film studies lecture materials. If you're looking for an enjoyable movie that entertains, skip this.

Film stayed with me for days reflecting on the past and learning to live in the moment. The final scenes will stay in your mind forever. The film will set you on your own individual journey. That’s what makes it so artistic. Loved it

Wonderful piece of work with amazing performances and thoughtful, suspenseful direction. It was more of a poem than a movie. Wish I could see it again for the first time. Requires patience…
