Reading through some of the reviews it’s unsurprising that many of the negative comments are skewed by personal opinions on race or sexual orientation - all of which are part of the bigger narrative and premise which is designed to challenge and speak to from both a cultural and Westernized perspective on multi-generational Asian American families in the United States.
If you see these comments as “close minded people will always hate what they don’t understand” and don’t stomp your feet at the opportunity to expand your worldview with a well crafted, challenging, dark humored, and spectacular or visual and audio artistry is something you seek from a film experience, then this is a great option for you.
I loved the dark humor and imaginative story of “Swiss Army Man” that this filmmaker previously made, and this is a giant leap forward in what could be an exciting next step in their filmography. Films like this give me hope that cinema will continue to grow with exciting, challenging, and imaginative efforts similar to this. Awesome movie!
