I doubted this would be a good movie. Once I saw Roland Emmerich was directing, I lost almost all faith for it. Sorry to say, because he is talented at crafting epic movies, but he’s usually only good at visual effects. His movies are too often terribly written and overstuffed with pointless exposition.
And much of the same problems arise here. The narrative is just too much. Too many characters are focused on and it’s hard to follow. Some of the dialogue was indeed bad, but here’s where I got surprised. The pointless humor scenes of side characters are mostly at a minimum in this film. We actually get SOME character development in an Emmerich film. And man, the battle scenes are just so intense. I would have removed some of the beginning scenes and made the attack on Pearl Harbor the opening, but that’s just me.
Overall, this is a pleasant surprise for me. It’s good. Not great. But filled with enough brilliant moments to overshadow the horrendous ones. The acting is on point and Emmerich makes sure to not get too carried away with plot driving the movie like in his usual blockbusters. There is actually some character-driven stuff here. And I love it.
