I am a German student in tenth grade (using my mother’s account to write this review)), so since Krampus was somewhat related to German culture I figured that my dad and I (my dad is a german teacher, has been to Germany several times, has taught german for over 30 years, and knows German culture very well) would go see it. I was not expecting it to be very good (maybe a one star) , but my father and I went into the theater with an open mind (Please know that my knowledge of German culture didn’t impact my overall review of the movie). The movie started out with a sick twist on the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation with a family much like the one that intruded the Griswold’s. It proceeded with the youngest son of the host family not believing in the spirit of Christmas. The next day Krampus and his helpers reeked havoc on everyone in the house. It just keeps getting worse from there. There was little plot to go along with the pointless gore, swear words, and confusion of the movie. The script was poorly written in my opinion due to the lack of flow. The only scary part of the movie was the lack of good transitions in-between scenes. The overall horror aspect wasn’t good either. The scares were the same old boring jump scares that every other horror movie has. The movie never generated suspense, or made me feel fearful for a character. Other than the small theme of keeping the Christmas sprit alive (which was lost due to the blood, gore, and tone of the movie) there was no positive messages that came out of the movie. One thing I would like to clarify though for the general public. The legend of Krampus in this movie was not like it was in German or Austrian culture. According to the legend Krampus (who worked under St. Nicholas) would go around giving bad children beatings with a switch, kidnapping them, or even eating then depending on how bad they were. However he was under the control of Nicholas, and never had helpers. The Movie reflects German and Austrian culture very poorly, and viewers should not associate this movie with the traditional German and Austrian myths. I would highly not recommend to watch or buy Krampus. -Thomas Kerrigan (Abington Heights High School 10th Grade Student)
