The Hunger Games, the franchise on fire! After a hot reception from audiences in 2012, Lionsgate brings us back to the world of Panem and The Hunger Games with a sequel that goes right up there with The Empire Strikes Back and other sequels that are much better than their originals. The first games was the standard games up until the love story came into play. Now, they raise the stakes by having the climax of the first one send ripples of revolution through the nation. We open with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) hunting like she used to, and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) shows up like last time, being all cool and casual. He encourages her to shoot a turkey instead of discouraging her from shooting a deer like in the first movie, only this time, shooting an arrow causes a flashback to the games, and after a panic attack Gale pulls her back to the present. I must praise the way Jennifer Lawrence portrayed PTSD in this movie (Like Robert Downey Jr. did in Iron Man 3 earlier in 2013), because she gets it right without mocking the millions of real-life vets with real PTSD. After Gale goes to his new job in the mines, Katniss gets an unexpected visit from President Snow (Donald Sutherland), who’s very unhappy with Katniss, and challenges her to convince him of her and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) love. After waking up Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) for the start of the victory tour, they’re reunited with Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), and the rest of their prep team the book fleshed out and gave personality to (though at the party at the President’s mansion, Effie clearly name checks Flavius and Octavia from the prep team, go back and you’ll hear their names). After Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci) introduces them on the Capitol feed, the tour begins, where Peeta tries to get to know Katniss better, fires of rebellion are kept contained (only so much), and ultimately, Katniss fails to convince Snow of her love for Peeta, initiating a chain of events that lead her and Peeta into a new arena with new (but familiar to Panem) tributes and new challenges. The new characters are developed as well as they’re needed to be in the context, but the spotlight still belongs to the star-crossed lovers. The plot is coherent, but the movie is (again) a long one, full of detail, but it could have had a few things gutted to make it shorter. I didn’t lose interest, but if it takes 80+ minutes to get to the titular event (The Hunger Games themselves), then you may be wasting time. Some events with whole book chapters got cut to glances and mentions, but otherwise, it was coherent. The visual was great as ever, and with a clearly larger budget and higher expectations, they delivered. The best part is Francis Lawrence kept a steady hand except for action, which was still easier to see than Gary Ross’ “shake like there’s no tomorrow” style. It may or may not have to do with the fact that instead of children, the tributes in the games are fully-grown adults, and the fact the MPAA has some level of standards for on-screen violence and its depiction, but I digress. James Newton Howard delivers the score worthy of the increasing drama in this installment, and there’s a lot more comic relief to be found here, as well as swearing (as in, some of the seven you can’t say on TV). The girl on fire’s story truly ignites here, and we get a sense of heightened tension. Remember who the real victor is here: you, me, and anyone else who enjoys this improved sequel.

No aspect Ratio Change = BUMMER

The theatrical release of the film had an interesting feature: as Katniss entered the arena, the aspect ratio slowly morphed to IMAX. Unfortunately this has been altered in the iTunes version, and the second half of the movie has a cropped image to maintain the aspect ratio of the first half. While I love this film, I'm sorely disappointed that this beautiful transition is missing.
What I find odd is that other iTunes movies, such as 'The Dark Knight', switch seamlessly to the larger-framed format, but this movie omits it for some reason. Perhaps, this can be remedied sometime down the road, without me having to repurchase.

Out of curiosity i iTuned this Part 2 , at least it's a B+ movie - almost an " A " , like the 1st one . Who's dumb idea was it to throw a 68 yr old OLD LADY in the arena fight ? So i guess THE HUNGER GAMES :MOCKINGJAY Part 1 ( actually part 3 ) is going to be an all out WAR ?

Such a great sequel

Catching Fire is probably the best movie of the series, maybe tied with Mockingjay Part 2. It is thrilling, interesting, intense and entertaining. If I had to choose one movie I could watch for the rest of my life, this would definitely be it. It totally beats its predecessor (which is still a great movie) and portrays the book as it is. And I couldn't forget Jennifer Lawrence's superb acting, she pulls off the role of Katniss in these films perfectly. Would recommend this to anyone!

This Was so much better then The Hunger Games for three reasons 1. Because there is the love between katniss and peeta. 2. Josh Huntcherson and Jennifer Lawrence Did a much better acting then in the original. 3. In this movie they are killing adults instead of Kids in this movie so I like that!

A pretty great follow up

Words can't even describe. Don't be sad if there's no rent button, buy it! Whether you're going to see it again or not, it's still worth 20 dollars, even if you're just going to watch it only one time. It really did follow the book well, let's say 85% which isn't bad for an adaptation. But who cares about that, please buy it! And when I say "buy it" I mean in HD. Catching Fire is NOT a movie you watch in SD. There are beautiful colors in it, for one thing.

In this one they made everything bigger and better, I mean it's looking at the same districts and the same capital, but everything just feels a whole lot bigger and I Like that. I Absolutely Loved this one and I always will Love it. Just a really awesome, thrilling, intense and action-packed movie. Love this movie.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is an amazing movie and deserves a higher rating than it currently has on IMDb. The Hunger Games series is one of my favorite series for several reasons.
I will not spoil it for those that have yet to read the series, so my comments will be fairly vague. The series is very well written and worth the time to read. It also sends a powerful message about leaders and government, power and strength, persistence and hope, and ultimately the greater good.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is my favorite book out of the series, so I was extremely excited to see this movie in theaters. It did not disappoint. It followed the book closely and even used most of the same lines that the characters had in the book. The special effects were definitely better in this movie than in the previous one. I am glad that they got a new director. If you have chosen not to see this one because of the last one, rest assured it is entirely different and much, much better! The set was also great, it is pretty much how I had imagined it looking from reading the book. The costumes are also wonderful.
One (of many) things that I am thoroughly happy about are all of the actors that have been chosen to play each character. I think they chose with care and accuracy. All of them do a wonderful job, especially Jennifer Lawrence. Amazing actually.
The soundtrack for this movie is simply wonderful!
As far as the violence goes, it is not as violent as the first movie. I would not recommend it for younger kids, depending on what movies they are not allowed to see.
Overall, this movie is definitely in my top ten favorites! If you have not seen it yet, I recommend getting it and watching it.

I made it to when the parachute brought the spile. And much like the first film, I couldn't keep going. I understand the reason to condense a film adaptation. But I wish they wouldn't change what they do keep in so drastically. Plus, they didn't even include Bonnie and Twill in the beginning. Who in the book, bring up District 13 to Katniss. Which was an important scene.
I don't know... I get why movies cut things out. But why they make the scenes they keep so different, I'll never understand. And keep trivial moments and cut important ones. Ugh, movies. My advice, skip the films and read the books. So much better.

Another good Hunger Games hit!

I went 'oh snap!' when Katniss heard she had to get back into the games a 2nd time. I wanted to kick President Snow's butt, because I just knew he did that on purpose. I know almost everybody misses Rue still right? She didn't deserve to die! :( Totally Random!

I couldn’t wait for this movie to get interesting and then after it didn’t, I couldn’t wait for it to end. It was so formulaic and predictable and keeps playing on one clichéd theme endlessly.
Then there were the myriad of inconsistencies that makes movies like this maddening. For example, when you’re out in the ingle and you exhaust your cache of arrows, just how is it that your quiver just keeps repopulating?

Will continue next week......

Breathlessly ratcheting up both the violent dramatic stakes and the epic filmmaking scale of its predecessor in just under two and a half hours, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," the second of four films (based on three novels), is a thunderous, intense epic that sends this entire franchise to big new heights. Not only is it a superb adaptation of a very complex book, but it effortlessly showcases some of the best young (and old) talents in any big-budget action event this year. Along with a terrifically committed cast, this flick blazes by on the strengths of its gripping lead characters, intense battle sequences, and consistent sense of urgency. There's a reason why this series has been hailed as one of the best modern novel adaptations, and once you see this incredible second installment in all its immense, action-packed glory, you'll instantly see why.
District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) just won the last Hunger Games by challenging the direct authority of President Snow (Donald Sutherland), and now they're simply being paraded around the districts in a desperate attempt to soothe the impending spark of rebellion across the entire nation. But they only manage to make things worse, so Snow instructs new Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to kill these meddlesome kids in the next Games, a Quarter Quell that has several evil twists. Through all of this chaos, Katniss only wants to protect Peeta and those closest to her with the help of her drunken mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), preening manager Effie (Elizabeth Banks), and quietly subversive designer Cinna (Lenny Kravitz). But she fails to remember who the true enemy is.
This episode captures author Suzanne Collins' engrossing narrative style much more so than the first film, as we truly get to see everything through Katniss' flawed yet endearing perspective. We still do get the occasional cutaway to Snow and Plutarch plotting their next brutal move, but the main field of action is cleverly shown through limited, distracted eyes that catch all the details but don't quite connect all the dots. It's a hugely remarkable achievement for screenwriters Simon Beaufoy and Michael DeBruyn. Meanwhile, the big character relationships are even more subtly complicated than they were before, giving the central actors a whole lot of material to work with. Katniss still refuses to choose between her public partner Peeta and her private best friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and the several scenes she has between the two of them tellingly reflect her indecision and the powerful conviction she has with both. Her interactions with Haymitch, Snow, Cinna, and even her younger sister Prim (Willow Shields) also evolve significantly throughout the course of this film, as do her shifting connections with Hunger Games competitors Finnick (Sam Claflin), Johanna (Jena Malone), Beetee and Wiress (Jeffrey Wright and Amanda Plummer), and Mags (Lynn Cohen). As the lead heroine, Lawrence once again owns this whole flick quite effortlessly from start to finish, continually radiating genuine courage and devastating heartbreak in some of the most dramatic and deliberately shocking scenes shown in any recent blockbuster. She and Hutcherson are simply the heart of the movie, but Katniss alone is the very soul. It's her enduring presence and will to survive that provides the core humanity to this grand adventure, and to the entire franchise in general.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is a rare dystopian action flick packed with enough smarts to back up its subtext and provocative themes. Even when things get extremely brutal (and believe me, they do), we're always gripped by the constantly unnerving events and complex character detail. It's also fully packed with a menagerie of incredibly exhilarating set pieces, including the final heart-racing sequence, which reveals this saga's true trajectory. And what really gets under our skin by the end is the big way director Francis Lawrence magnificently puts us into Katniss' shoes, forcing us to think about issues of loyalty and justice in ways movies hardly ever do anymore. When all is really said and done, this isn't just the best flick in the series thus far, it's one of the best films of the year. Full of terrific performances, epic action, and raw emotion, it's a ride you won't regret taking.

Catching Fire = Outstanding

I wish F. Lawrence would have directed the first one. This movie is such an iconic tribute to fans of the books. This is so much more than the Hunger Games. It is emotional/powerful. Finnick, Johanna, Beetee, Plutarch were exceptional. Jennifer & Josh delivered! One of the best adaptations of a book to movie. Loved every minute and cannot wait for the Mockingjay movies.... For those that think the ending is too abrupt or confusing/weird; please read the last chapter of the book. Catching fire ends the way it was supposed to end.

This movie is fantastic - Jennifer Lawrence nails her part perfectly, and the rest of the great cast captures both the subtle nuances of each character and the bigger picture of the whole storyline. This movie keeps you intrigued and on the edge of your seat the whole time (this coming from someone who has read the books beforehand!) I don't buy many movies, but this will definitely be one I'll be adding to my collection.

This is by far the best movies and sequel of the year.
The Action Sequence was awesome, The Story was well done and Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen was outsanding.
Francis Lawrence, the director of "I Am Legend" did a great job of the films.
It's awesome and it's intense and the ending was a great twist but I not going to spoilers so you must see it's. It's was the best. The 2 part finale of The Hunger Games was Mockingjay will come out with part 1 on November 21,2014 and part 2 on November 20, 2015 becaues I can't wait to see.

Unlike everybody else I actually hated the first Hunger Games movie. It rushed through the entire story, it had no emotional feel, it was poorly filmed and had lousy directing despite good intentions. Catching Fire however does everything right and then some. Catching Fire emotionally grabs you in with it's beautiful cinematography, emotionally intense storytelling, like able characters and solid direction. From the first 10 min I was immediately captivated and the next 2 & 1/2 hours flew by like nothing. Catching Fire is intense, thought provoking, beautiful and leaves you satisfied, but still wanting more. Overall I loved this film & I'm not even a fan of the Hunger Games. It's a excellent improvement over the last film and I can't wait until Mockingjay!!! I highly recommend it!!!

This is the movie of the year! It was so much better than the first. Not that much bloody. I cried, and I jump out of my seat. I was in shock at the end. I CAN'T wait for the last one! What is going to happen?

I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful this movie is. Beautiful adaption of the book. An even better film then the first (though I must say I didn't like the first). This director is phenominal and one million times better than Gary Ross (prievious director). In love with this movie. Only thing I'd change? The censoring out Johanna Mason swearing during her interview. Nobody watching this movie is going to be offended by it. Other than that it's to die for.

Wow!

I saw Catching Fire at the double feature on Thursday, and… Wow. One of the best movies I've ever seen. So dramatic, so powerful, and improves on even the great original film. (I do wish Haymitch's victory tape was shown, but otherwise fantastic.) A must-see. Most definitely the film of the year, and I dare say one of the best this decade, even at this point. (I like the moving logo at the end; nice touch!) I hope Mockingjay: Part 1 is done right; if it's anything like Catching Fire, it'll be great.

Finally! A movie adaptation of a book that is true to the origin story! I heard people complaining behind me in the theater about how stupid it was/confusing it was/or how they can't end a movie like that. It was all I could do to keep myself from turning around and saying, "Yeah they can because that's how to book ends, but if you had read it before seeing the movie, you'd understand everything that went on." Anyways, this one was so much better than the first movie. It was obvious the budget was much higher this time around. The effects, the cinematography, and the costuming were much better. Thank you Francis Lawrence! Thank you guys who wrote the screenplay and kept it true without any major thing left out or any extra unnecessary fluff! I also love how they kept so many of the actual lines from the book in the movie! It was fantastic!!

AMAZING

This is my new favourite movie ever. Jennifer Lawrence (<3) & the others did an incredible job, and if you thought The Hunger Games was good, you are in for a treat.

The Hunger Games Catching Fire truly is the best movie of the year. Jennifer Lawrence gave an outstanding performance as Katniss Everdeen. She is really believable and lets you connect with the character. Josh Hutcherson did a lot better in this than The Hunger Games. He did a very impressive job at being Peeta. I could never turn away from the screen and never got bored. The film held my attention until the very end. When it sadly did end, all I wanted was more. It also stayed very true to the book. I highly recommend you see this jaw dropping, wonderful and outstanding blockbuster.

A MUST watch!!
