Description

Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944.

Saving Private Ryan is in my top 5. This movie is the best War movie ever made. Everything about this movie is perfect. From the Opening Brutal, and Gory D-Day landing to the final battle. The movie is full of amazing characters that build every minute that at the end you don't just want Ryan to just go home but all of them. Simply AMAZING!!

A basic plot and realistic movie action, ok good. But my problem is with the characters, since half of the film they all look the same I can't find anyone to really care about. Even when they do take their heliments off why should I care about random soldier 2747844 dying, what makes it different from random soldier 3758843 death besides what they say while dying. I almost want my money back for this garbage.

I have seen this movie 5 times and it's still a great film. The movie shows how WWII was and the sacrifice of millions of men to beat the Nazis. The most terrifying scene was when the D-Day invasion happened in Normandy, France. Everybody should defiantly see this movie. Also, when I heard that Saving Private Ryan was nominated. I new that it must've won, but it didn't win for best picture. It did win for best director and etc.

No other war film comes close to the sheer scale and realistic savagery of Saving Private Ryan. I remember watching this in the theaters when I was 13 years old, and having nightmares like a wwII veteran. If they had GoPro cameras back in the Normandy Invasion, it would have probably looked like the first 20 mins of this movie!!

I have viewed this film three times. I will most likely view it again. Outstanding performances by all the actors, but especially Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, and Jeremy Davies. The film captures the devastation, fear, sorrow that war brings. But more importantly, the camaraderie among the men desperately hanging on by a thread but prevailing. The soundtrack is beautifully done. I love this film.

My computer supports HD video but the LCD projector I use at work is not HD. I mistakenly thought this would not be a problem but as it turns out it will not run in this configuration. To use the sd copy I have to hope it will run in time with my school districts internet. Most of the time it takes 30 minutes to load this. I could not show the part I wanted them to see in time. =[

I admire Saving Private Ryan for two things. One of them is the fact that Spielberg wasn't afraid to show the audience his vision of the madness of World War 2. The other thing are the two great performances given by Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. Both the actors do a really great job. The opening scene is intense and unforgettable. You've probably heard other critics gush over the first 30 minutes of this film, so I won't go into too much detail. Out of all the good things in the movie, there is one bad. The one thing I dislike about this film is the soldier that is armed with ammunition but is too scared to save his dying brother from a German soldier. That irritates me. But to be fair, they do address that he overcomes his fear at the end. All in all, Saving Private Ryan is a spectacular war film that anyone can enjoy. I have to give it a big shiny 9/10.

This Spielberg classic was in a list, along with 9 other films, on must see movies for me in the summer of 2013. This was the last film on the list to be viewed. I can honestly say that the list went out with a bang. What I admire most about Saving Private Ryan is the fact that Spielberg wasn't afraid to show the audience his vision on the madness of war. However, aside from that, Saving Private Ryan contains great performances by Tom Hanks and Matt Damon along with other actors who's names I do not know. For some reason I have yet to discover, I never got emotional at the end. Maybe it's just because I am a boy critic. Despite that, I would gladly give Saving Private Ryan a watch and rate it with a big shiny 9 out of 10.

Sorry i rated this five stars but usually they put those reviews first and you people have to read this before you buy i would normally rate this 1 or 2 stars.

I would have bought this movie because I have seen It before and I loved it but then I looked at how much memory it took...6.61 GB! What the heck! That's like 20% of my memory. If you have a 64GB iPad then I highly encourage you too buy this but apple please fix this problem because that is just outrageous.

It's funny but I was talking to a friend of mine a couple of days ago saying that one of Spielbergs best films is not on iTunes. Well, now it is!!!

The first 15 minutes of this film is amazing. Incredibly violent but a must see film, to really show the true horrors of war. Don't miss this!! Or if you have seen it, buy it ($10) and experience it again. THE BEST WAR FILM OF OUR TIME!!!!

There are few good movies that I watch more than 2-3 times, this is one of them! Tom Hanks is phenomenal in his depiction of Capt. Miller in this sobering and emotional film. The action is raw, riveting, and at times may be unbearably graphic for the squeamish. Contains enough historical inspiration and basis to appease WWII buffs, but overall, this movie is about the men who fought WWII and its lasting effects. A must see.

Saving Private Ryan is a work of art in my opinion, when it comes to films. The acting is superb. The cinematography is excellent. The directing is masterful. All of this tied together with it being based on a true story and you can't go wrong.

The story is of a squad sent to rescue a soldier, so he can be sent home. The movie depicts what happens before the squad gets the orders for the rescue, their dangerous travel to find the soldier, and what happens when they finally find him.

I strongly recommend to either rent or buy. If you are a fan of war films or Tom Hanks you won't be disappointed.
