Same opinion on both of them for me; great VFX, decent movie. Besides for possibly the best unintentionally funny scene in movie history, the scene where they are transferring Grace from her human body to her Avatar body (played that scene over twice because me and my friend could not stop laughing) the movie itself is honestly nothing special. It’s not bad but not worthy of highest grossing movie of all time! Endgame deserved it more. Just imagine somebody told you after Titanic came out that James Cameron was gonna break his own record with a near 3 hour movie about big blue half naked elves worshiping a tree with strobe lights and controlling space dinosaurs with their magic ponytails. How did we let THAT become our highest grossing movie??

Update.. Ok now it’s 2 stars… finally we have access to 4K… but Apple TV ONLY! Can’t download or stream 4k to iPad or iPhone because we don’t have file grab above 1080… we have two options now one is data saver or 720 the other is high quality and that’s 1080 resolution. We dont have file grab options for 1440/2K or 2160/4K resolution on iPhone or iPads… wake up APPLE! Come on!!.. 🤬

Yes it looks nice. But that’s it. It’s boring a.f. I’ve tried many times to get pass the first 30 mins and I just can’t. My baby cousin who’s now 22 loves it. I think she got dropped in the head as a baby. Matter of fact she did. I was there when if happened

The movie looks beautiful, but the story is the same old rehashed story of the poor natives falling to the invasive white man that has been seen over and over again. The movie bashes on how evil corporations are, how ugly technology is, and ends with not only an improbable ending but with the implied genocide of the human race being a positive outcome.

In addition to all this, you watch an entire movie where the protagonist's job is to make peace with the natives so they can harvest the mineral they are there for without fighting with them. Instead, he gets it on with a native, forgets about his job, and ends up being responsible for the war at the movie's climax by failing to do his job. Nevermind at the end of it, the MC is directly responsible for a looming energy crisis on Earth that will cause billions of death. This is literally a movie where the villain wins, but because it's told from his point of view, the average viewer is deceived.

I saw this in theaters opening day and it was amazing. I’ll never forget it. The effects were mind blowing and I haven’t seen cgi this good since.

if you need every movie to be citizen Kane but different and better like some people you’ll hate this.

It’s essentially the seven samurai but there’s more like 3 of them and they only help the villagers after they leave the employ of the bandits.

but If you don’t mind that you’ve seen the story before it’ll blow your socks off.

One of the worst stories on screen ever. Watch Ferngully or Pocahontas. Awful acting, and the only reason it did amazing is because it revolutionized 3D in theaters. Stop lying to yourself this movie is forgettable and will not do anything when the “no one wanted but we are getting” a sequel

Avatar absolutely soars with its groundbreaking visual effects in terms of motion capture and computer-generated characters, and introduces a franchise with great characters and an iconic universe. It may not be as strong in its storytelling, but it is clearly intended to be overshadowed by the breathtaking visual achievements. 8.5/10

Considering this movie was made in 2009, the graphics are amazing. I saw a user commenting that he/she rated it one-star just because it wasn't in 4K resolution, like come on? Anyhow, the plot of the movie was phenomenal, I enjoyed every second of it, and I have been watching it over and over for about 10 years now. I am so excited for Avatar II to come out, I hope it meets the same expectations as this one.

Also, for those reviewing saying it isn’t worth it to buy because it isn’t HD: look up the actual side to side comparison of SD vs HD. I was like you until I did. It is practically identical. I wouldn’t even say HD better looks- just a slight change in color. Tbh, after discovering that I’ve determined SD actually looks better. Lol, so you can keep paying 2x the price for content that is nearly identical (and imo actually slightly worse than SD). Meanwhile, I’m going to enjoy cheap AND higher quality content.

This movie was not a masterpiece considering the ingenuity of the masterpiece of Star Wars and 2001 a space odyssey, and Citizen Cane, yes the special affects were good, but the story was two political for my taste.

Avatar is dazzling and visually stunning Sci-Fi action movie with all the nice sets and great effects. The cast was amazing so as the perfect director James Cameron but either way this movie is spectualuar at every level this movie will keep you entertained iam not lying.

While the theatrical cut itself is pretty long, I still found it to be worth every single minute. I saw AVATAR three times in theaters when it first came out, and it was truly one of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had at a movie theater. I’m lucky enough to own a Blu-Ray 3D player, and I must say that my most recent viewing of the film perfectly reminded me why. It is literally everything you could possibly want in a blockbuster. In fact, as I was watching the film, I kept wondering “how did this not win in either sound categories at the Oscars?”. I understand that THE HURT LOCKER is a war film, and those of course do pretty well with the sound awards. Though as Tom O’Neil (the editor-in-chief of Gold Derby) keeps reminding us, the loudest movie tends to win the sound categories. I would’ve loved to have seen AVATAR take home Best Sound Editing and/or Best Sound Mixing on Oscar night to go with its three (well deserved) wins.

As for all the complaints people had with the film saying that it was just a science fiction knockoff of DANCES WITH WOLVES, FERNGULLY, and/or POCAHONTAS, so what? Almost every science fiction movie has been inspired by other stories. Even the original STAR WARS had inspiration from several stories George Lucas happened to have been fond of.

This the greatest movie that James Cameron has ever made it’s amazing in HD this will change your life and truly it’s fascinating.THANK YOU JAMES

The only thing this movie has going for it are the special effects. The story is unoringinal, boring, and predictable. The acting is cheesy and unbelievable, it's obvious they were trying to save money on the actors. Waste of 2.5 hours.

I thought this movie was bad. Not just to be "non-conformist" or because I couldn't get it in HD, but because it was simply a bad movie. I saw this in theaters, regular, not 3-d, and I shouldn't have had to to get a good movie watching experience. I fidgeted through the entire 3 hour long action movie with almost no action, and the acting was less than stellar. I didn't care about the characters, and more than once I found myself rooting for the humans! My point is that the screenplay and acting were mediocre, and no amount of special effects or 10-foot-tall blue people could make it any better.

Its embarrassing that they would even release this movie without offering HD. I won't buy until it comes.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the movie - so don't take this rating for the movie itself... Yes, I've heard it all that the content is "...pure James Cameron...", et al, and such - but then again, isn't that part of the kind of legacy any person actually WANTS to leave behind, per se?

ANYway - the real basis of my "one star" is that we were introduced to whole new medium in entertainment, via "large format" projection and of course many, if not most, of us experienced it in 3D...

...knowing we were not going to download a three-dimensional version (just yet), I believe we all expected the quality of what we saw on the screens, and this iTunes version is HORRIBLE!! Watching it is a chore, as the resolution is sooooo bad compared to what we all noted about the theatrical release, it is downright a disgrace to Apple and Cameron himself, for releasing it as such...

Yes, I am sure he may be chuckling in his office watching the bank account get ever so much fuller today, but the aspect of quality should have come into play, as the whole movie was produced from that vacuum of "it has to be the best yet...". The release today (or 9pm Pacific last night) should have garnered as much attention from the likes of James himself, and maybe even a little bit of Steve'o, as this iTunes release rolls out a paradigm-changing movie that sooner than later, I believe Apple will release an HD 3D version, as another first.

BUT - in the meantime, Apple and Cameron both know, we all spent part of our hard-earned money to line his pockets, and knows that we're all suckers, just as George Lucas does, that we will buy, in the near and far-future, ever "director's cut", "extended edition", "collectors' cut" and of course "HD" and "3D" versions that will ever be released...

Shame on us wanting "the best", shame on James Cameron knowing we're such an easy flock...

...oh well, at least I have it and will be able to watch it on my way to Abu Dhabi...

Simple. Provide HD and it will sell. You're a fool if you buy this version. Patience will be rewarded. If it's not in HD I feel like I'm watching a cassette from blockbuster. Step it up boys and girls at apple-land. It's your stock price dropping.

It seems like everyone who doesn't like this movie seems to have some problem with its politics (which I think are fine though my second thought after leaving the movie (my first was "'I see you,' really?") I wish I had just rented Princess Mononoke. They did it better and I could have saved 17 bucks), but honestly it's just a bad movie. My wife and I actually did a whole lot of laughing at the terrible script. Talk about backing up the cheesey cliche truck and dumping a payload. The effects were good, don't get me wrong. They did create this new world and what have you, but it's really not this great visual revelation that so many describe it to be. Honestly I was much more impressed with what was accomplished in the Lord of the Rings movies (which I use as a bench mark at this point in time).

Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe I expected too much and am lashing out in disappointment. Either way though, this movie was just plain awful. I really don't see why people are so high on it. I can understand why people would like it more than I do, but people are hailing this as one of the all time greats. I get ferver and the hyperbole of being the current big thing, but it's just not even a good movie.

I guess this movie was entertaining and had a decent message, but really it is NOT that great. Every single character is shallow and unoriginal, following some sort of dumb stereotype; and for the life of me I can't figure out what the villain's motivation was. From a writer's point of view, it really sucked with characters and story. The plot was very predictable and superficial, and i would much rather prefer Pocahontas, thanks.

Avatar was so beautiful and cool visually, but it truly had no substance. The filmmakers did SUCH a good job with making it, well, pretty, that i wish they could have just gone a little further and made a better story. It's the stupid little things, like naming the essential element "un-obtanium" and making Jake thick as a brick, that make me want to smack James Cameron upside the head. Avatar had such great potential, but the dumb one liners and Jake's stupidity really make it a turn off for me and quite a few of my friends. I really do wonder how movies like Twilight and Avatar have become such overrated phenomenons for teenagers like me, and I hope that some more creative stories will come along soon.

where to begin.....well, this is just Pocahontas repackaged: JS (Jake Sully aka John Smith) meets a local native girl and learns the ways of the natives and learns to love mother nature. Eventually, his people come to annihilate the "savages." Yes, it was technically competent, but I was checking my watch halfway through. Cameron has shown us the mech suit before (24 years ago!), and the new ones aren't particularly more impressive than the ones in Aliens! He even threw in the Hispanic chick marine just like Vasquez in Aliens. Was it one star? Nah, more like 2, but I needed to counter-weight all the 5 star reviews!

With a generic plot, bad acting, and clocking in at around 3-hours, Avatar could be one of the most overhyped movie of this generation. It is literally the exact plot of Pochohontas (which I cannot spell), with the only difference being that the natives are blue and have a special tree.

I have to admit, the special effects were impressive at the theatrical release, but those are gone with a computer download. Literally, they were the only reasons to see it, and I do not understand how anyone could recomend this movie without them.

Save your $15 and 2.3 GB, and do not download this movie--you will be disapointed.

A traitor rallies blue aliens to slaughter humans and commit acts of terrorism.

The worst part of the movie is when the traitor pawn condemns the race of blue people to annihilation, because 'Avatar 2' the movie would show them being wiped out from orbit, as the few surviving humans rallied and pounded the planet to death using simple captured meteoroid attacks. All the death and destruction is caused by a former soldier who steals a genetically engineered blue Avatar body. How different the outcome could have been if the Avatar was controlled by a former corporate lawyer who could have negotiated a business deal instead of murdering countless people. The ex-marine pawn justified the transfer of the planet from corporate profiteering interests to military jurisdiction, his acts of violence leading to the eventual take over of the planet under government oversight.

Avatar gets a 1 / 5 star rating only because iTunes doesn't save 0 / 5 star ratings.

Visual effects: 10/10

Audio and soundtrack: 4.5/10

Acting and cast: 4/10

Writing: 1.5/10

Overall: Bad.

It is vital that this movie be available in HD. It cheapens the experience without it. PLease add HD version!

I only paid to see this movie because my friends said it was "amazing." This has to be one of the worst movies i have ever seen. pretty colors dont make an oscar winner. The story's been done before. the movie was very predictable and had horrible acting. It was a total let down. i would not reccomend buying this.

There are some exciting parts but the best feature of this movie is the visual aspect; story/plot are meh and action is late into the movie which is way longer than necessary. Best watched in theatre in 3D and whether you ever want to watch it again is up to you.

Avatar was one of the worst movies I have ever seen!! Not because of the acting or the visual effects, both of which were pretty good, but because of the PLOT. This film was totally predictable, following the plotlines of The Last Samurai and Pocohontas, the main character himself was totally uninteresting and I had a hard time listening to him, and I thought that the potrayal of the Marines in this movie was totally barbaric and was almost insulting...All this movie was was James Cameron's lil' pet project and I thought that it would have been better if he wouldve just left us with Titanic...Good movie, but rent it once, and never watch it again, not worth buying...

Avatar is an impressive display of computer generated images, but story wise is very lacking. There were no surprises or twists that any movie Go-er couldn't spot coming well before it passed. Furthermore, the entire story line of Avatar is ripped, in some places LINE FOR LINE from the classic film Dances With Wolves (1990).

Story aside i do believe Avatar is worth seeing for the visuals, but will be outdated in a few years when computer generated image technology improves.

I love how so many people say this is the best movie of the year. Because while visually stunning i found the plot was predictable,i didnt find the tempo of the music to match the movie, the movie while having a few action scenes was very boring until the end cinematic, the special effects distracted me for awhile but once that wore off i found the movie lacked anything plausible i don't understand how James wrote this i think he's a tad imaginative. All around good movie but not amazing and this hype over this movie is ridculus, and finally the Oscar's proved it that is why Mr. Cameron lost Best Picture and Best Director to The Hurt Locker. I just don't understand why people love this movie it was neat and a break from most movies but not the best. So maybe if someone could explain this to me that would be helpful.

everything about it is amazing, the visuals the music the acting (which should have at least gotten Zoe Saldana an oscar nom) the story (which may not be super original but it had great twitst from the other movies like it)

I think that the people who hate this movie are crazy. Avatar has revolutionized the special effects industry for this decade (next to The Lord of the Rings). Who cares that this movie is a Dances With Wolves/Pocahontas rip-off. It's an original film in the idea. Who cares if the acting isn't that great? What I care about is the amazing effects, the smooth cinematography, the brilliant art direction, and the score by James Horner. And one more thing, when I said in the my review of The Hurt Locker, I said that if that movie wins best picture over Avatar that I would go bezerk. Well it happened and will never watch the oscars again. Avatar is a masterpiece that will be remembered years from now, and The Hurt Locker in my opinion will be forgotten.

James Cameron makes a triumphant return to the box office with Avatar. Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time and it's not a surprise. The film is a futuristic western that showcases the best CG, cinematography, and action that Hollywood has to offer. Although the story is pretty predictable and borrows many elements from Pocahontas, it still manages to keep the audience engrossed in Avatar's spectacular universe. The superlative visuals in this film are absolutely breathtaking. The beautiful creature designs, environments, and action sequences take CG to an entirely new level. James Horner provides a memorable score to accompany this modern masterpiece, but fails to outdo his work on Titanic or Braveheart. Cameron has created a wonderful universe to expand upon in future sequels. Although Avatar is not perfect, it is definitely the best eye candy ever made.
