This movie is phenomenal. It has a great cast, great characters, and a great story. The fact it is a true story only adds the the experience, and if you know the outcome of the story, you have an idea of the ending and it's a bit of a safety net. NASA should be proud of how it is portrayed in the movie, and should hope for more films like this based on NASA Missions.
The story is very true and the acting is perfect, although there are some corny moments in my opinion that is mostly the music's fault. There are face shots with the annoying repetitive notes from the music that ruin the scene, but there aren't MANY scenes with this in it. Another scene that bothers me is when Lovell's youngest daughter starts crying at the retirement home. Horrible acting by the kid. But it's a minor scene and you soon forget it as the movie goes on.
I've seen it about 4 times now, all recently, and I can tell you that it never gets old. It starts at the perfect point in time in history and ends at the right time too. Although the voice-over by Tom Hanks in the end is a bit depressing and can bring down the mood you feel at that particular time, the movie is well put together.
Since it was made in 1995, it is obvious the special effects are dated. It seems like a video game at times when the shot is completely out of the spaceship's window, but most of the shots showing action regarding the ship itself in space is still believable. Overall an amazing story is told by an amazing movie with an amazing cast.
