Description

A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.

This is Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece. In my opinion it's among the top 3 movies ever made!
Fortunately I had the privilege to see it when it was released in the sixties.!
It was released in 70 MM Super Cinnerama! (far superior to todays blue ray)
It played several summers ago at The Arclight Theatre here in Hollywood in that glorious format and brought back all the emotional responses
you get from this film when seen as Kubrick intended on that giant curved screen.
Imagine that, you get an emotional response from a film that seem so cold on the surface.
I have the laser disc box set and the Blue Ray versions and while the transfers are nice, you can't compare the experience to seeing it on the big screen.
If you ever have an opportunity to see it in Super Cinnerama 70 MM, run, don't walk to the theatre!
As many reviewers have stated this is a cerebral film experience and Star Wars fans needn't apply.
There are no zoom noises in outer space, no shoot-um ups and space vehicles behave like space vehicles (not airplanes).
Although I'd swear that earth to space station shuttle is performing a ballet!
In all those years since this film premiered, I have yet to see a science film that even comes close!
Even with no CGI Kubrick has out-done them all!
For Apple...Can we have a Smilebox version in the correct aspect ratio as shown in "roadshow" theaters (ask your parents what that means) Thank you.

While I found some of this movie astoundingly gorgeous to watch. The fact that the only character development is the iconic Red Dot eye of HAL 9000 should tell you something. Yes it takes a very mystical and obscure look at evolution and man. You simply don't care about the characters. HAL easily has most of the dialog. So while this may be a masterpiece of movie making it is not a masterpiece of storytelling. Every shot is a museum piece. Stunning in every sense of the word. But what the movie does for film making and effects, it doesn’t do for compelling story telling and character development. You simply don’t care about the characters nor do we know why (until another movie) know what is up with HAL who never ever EVER made a mistake. A solid YES for looks and effects. A MEH for caring what happens to the people. Read the book if you want to make a connection to the people and their lives.

This film was before Star Wars actually this film might be better than Star Wars, this Hollywood film actually has space travel more correctly than other films, and the models of Star Wars are mediocre compared to the 55 foot model of the discovery and the centrifuge.

2001 A Space Odyssey is a masterpiece beyond brilliant filmmaking and sound design. The film looks gorgeous and well-written characters that have interactions and relationships with, though 2001 is the golden age of cinema because movies now in 2020 is straight to garbage Hollywood stupid and back then Hollywood didn't have the style or technology to make movies out of a green screen or CGI effects.
Importanly 2001 used pratical visual effects which were common back then in the 60's and 70's but now visual effects are stupid slock or big. But never in a million years 2001 has been a cinematic exprience to explore. I get that people don't understand the concept or premise of this film but normanly films like (A Clockwork Orange, Under the Skin or Inception) people should understand because they have certian good directors who look through the script and make it look real and neat as possible. 2001 is the prime example of how visual effects are made and this film looks incredibly beautiful in scale, Space itself is mindbending and a odyssey to explore through what Stanley Kubrick tried to do is explain human emotions, evolution and mankind's fate. And Kubrick taught that structure of conecpt very well, the best part of the movie is the beginning sets the tone for the entire movie with that epic soundtrack is beyond fantastic and fits with this film.
The cinematopgraphy is fantastic, beautiful and this movie has great locations, good opening for the dawn of man which was the best part of the movie because apes needed to learn and grow and think as a human and now living in a wasteful environment space is the quite place in the universe. The actors were great but i understood these characters as friends and workship partners expect the space shuttle has beautiful rooms and up side down locations which were distracting and annoying but it's space no one can hear you scream. If 2001 A Space Odyssey were released today i think people who hate the movie because it's hidden behind a green screen or it's to boring for them because that's what i got from the critics. The movie would be 3 hours long and have different set of characters that have no interactions or friendship going around it's because we live in a hateful culture were movies are rejected from critics, people and the news.
But 2001: A Space Odyssey never fails at being a overlong masterpiece that has fantastic and beautiful locations and stunning visual effects, 2001 will never disappoint you because the music and visual effects, good storytelling, great characters are all over the place and that's what makes cinema so complex, confusing, entertaining, well written if there romance, action, thriller, drama, comedy, sci-fi or music you will still enjoy any movie beyond recozingation and beautiful mind sets for your opinions and don't say 2001 is a boring movie because you know what you were probaley looking down your phone anyway i highly recommed this film it's fantastic and visualy stunning at every level.

To understand the themes, beauty and provocative achievement of this movie, you have to consider when it was made - at a time when the first heart transplants and first moon landings were promising to rescue humankind from its various miseries, and even from death. Along come Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick to show us that in spite of all our technological achievements, we are still just children and prone to the same tragic hubris and self-destructive errors that have always been a part of our nature. The combination of imagery, music and slow, realistic depictions of action in space combine in ways they never had before this film, and have influenced every movie since. Kubrick shows us a future in which men are machines, and machines are very human, reflecting their creators. In the end, however, Kubrick presents an exhilarating and moving sequence showing in breathtaking fashion that the positive qualities of the human race, especially the will to seek knowledge, provide some hope that we may yet survive our worst mistakes and instincts and, with a little help, discover our ultimate fate and our true place in the vast universe.

I just discovered that my HD copy is now 4K HD and Dolby Vision and I have to say that for all who do like or love this movie, (a lot of haters who just Don’t get it) to see this movie on the latest iPads or 4K monitors will absolutely blow you away. The picture quality is the best I’ve Ever seen with this film. Looks like it was shot in 4K HD recently, not looking like shot in 1967-released 1968 film quality.
If you don’t own this film, buy it, and what a incredible ahead of its time film to show off to someone, such amazing picture quality from an amazing film from 1968.

(SPOILER WARNING) When I looked this movie up, I thought it was going to be really good. I was shocked and disappointed at the same time. Two and a half hours of pure nothing! This movie could be remade today and I might find it better (shocked, I know.) It's just... the movie needed more dialouge. You know, explain some stuff from time to time. Maybe not draw out scenes for ten times longer then they should be. Then it could be decent! Because, I mean, someone goe through an acid trip, enters a room to switch bodies, and then a giant domino turned him into a GIANT FETUS!!! What the heck am I supposed to know about that?! Nothing!!! I looked it up and found out he became a "Star Child". And that's it! What?! Sigh... Also, at the start and in the middle of the movie, there are these three-minute scenes of darkness, and really intense, sensitive music. I coulda done without those.
There are only two things in this movie that made me give it a 2/5 instead of a 1: First, HAL 9000. He was pretty cool, and also sounded like someone I knew. And second, the visuals! Oh gosh, were they beautiful! At the time, they were considered groundbreaking, and still are today! If only there was sense to them.
Anyways, I hope my rant was useful. It likley wasn't.

To quote Rock Hudson, “What is this #!?#!” Don’t expect plot, character development or dialog. It’s all a visual spectacle. And, it’s also 2.5 hours of my life I’ll never get back.
Best scene is the black screen with music at the start. Once you see things it all goes downhill.
On the plus side, the music is great.

With 2001, Kubrick did for film what Stephen King did for books. They brought the supernatural to your doorstep. They made the extraordinary believable. Structurally the film has some problems, such as the often incoherent plotting in favor of an experimental approach, still no other film has captured so elegantly the moral dilemmas of artificial intelligence or the meaning of existence within the isolation of space.

It all boils back to this film as far as technical achievements ... I find myself watching this movie over and over because it's that good !!! I want a 4k version of all of Stanley Kubrick's movies .. if you have never seen this movie you are about to get a lesson in craftsmanship and true artist he paints the most beautiful story about Mans evolution ...

There aren't too many movies that I've watched that are this boring and uneventful. The point of the - I guess you call this a movie - is totally lost in the complete lack of substance. I had to watch it in five sittings, becaause it was such a complete waste of time. The camera angles are kinds cool, but the entire time I'm watching - I'm saying to myself - how did this get to be relaased. It is simply a weak attempt. I do not recommend this to anyone.

I feel bad about saying this, but I disliked 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yes, the visuals are groundbreaking and yes, it may be a brilliant stylistic accomplishment, but it is also boring. There is no dialogue for the first 25 minutes, it is too long, and the plot never feels like it is going anywhere. As a piece of art, it could be seen as a great film but as a piece of entertainment, it is not.

This movie is clearly a piece of art and a mile stone in special effects of its time. I think it deserves a lot of credit for that. However, it completely fails to entertain as a movie. There is no dialogue in it for the first 1 and a half or so. The endless scenes with spinning space ships would be considered a screensaver today. If, in looking for science fiction film, you are looking for cinematic fast food or a buffet restaurant - rather than a five-star meal - pass this movie by. You'll be disappointed. There's actual science (with some minor technical errors due to this not being CGI, and actually being filmed on a 1G field on Earth) involved here - researched for accuracy.
If, on the other hand, you're looking for a science fiction that is like a 5-star meal, and is actual "hard" science fiction - buy it and download it. This is one of the more consequential films ever made - groundbreaking in special effects, game-changing in terms of how a genre (science fiction) is produced for cinema, and masterful in the cinematography and sound design.
And, best of all, based upon a short story by one of the greats of science fiction writing: Arthur C. Clarke.
You don't even have to be a cinema 'snob' or insider. All that you have to be is someone who can enjoy the presentation, the craftsmanship, and be prepared to think about what the meaning is - and, even change your opinion about the meaning of it all.
This is one of those rare movies that doesn't spoon-feed you the story - from opening to closing credits. It leaves you with questions. It makes you *think*. You can watch it in the theaters on opening day (for the amazing price of $2.50 per ticket) and see it one way, watch it on television 10 years later and see more (and change your opinion of what it 'meant'), and nearly 50 years later download it here - and be as amazed by the craftsmanship as you were when you saw it as a child/young adult, and, still enjoy the "What does it *mean*?
That's the mark of a great movie. This is the equal of Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind,.... movies that will still be consequential long after the filmmakers and actors have passed-away, still be a part of (then) cultural references, still be recognized as having been special.

Not a movie you’ll probably watch more than once every year, but maybe every few years. For a frame of reference, I was one (1) when this movie came out in theaters the first time. No, I didn’t see it then. I think it may have played on TV once or twice, and that may have been how I eventually tried to enjoy this movie - a daunting task on the little screen. Then, I believe I was able to watch it on VHS, and then DVD… so much seemed new due to editing for commercials on regular TV.
Finally, in a day and age of affordable tech such as larger, flat screen TVs, HD digital media, and theater-quality home sound systems, I felt as if I was able to watch the film as designed. The visuals, almost half a century old, are still breathtaking. The music fits, although might be lost on a generation less-inclined to partake in recreational medication. The story… the acting… perfect in every way, including the ending which has been open to interpretation for decades. As I watched this film for the 4th time, I notice little things that seem to explain the ending, especially during the psychedelic sequence. Where I was once frustrated wondering “what the heck just happened?”, now I feel as if I finally get it. That probably never would have happened simply watching it on broadcast television. If that’s the only way you’ve ever seen this, treat yourself via iTunes.

I saw the movie when it first came to theaters..you now know I am not young…but now that I am older I bought it on iTunes and love it! No..nothing has changed..but I now realize what a wonderful picture it was/is. Kubrick used the magic of screen..with no CGI around…and keeps you spell-bound by the cinematography. No dialogue for the first 30 minutes…and not a whole lot throughout. Yet, it kept me spellbound. Could you imagine what Kubrick could have done with CGI and camerawork together? Anyway I have changed my mind about the film after about 45 + years have gone by..I was about 18 when I saw it the first time. Now you know my age. Buy it at this price….beautiful scenery..even though you know it is fake..it captures your attention..well..at least mine anyway. Humans this day and age do not give this movie the recognition it deserves. Kids and young adults these days only care about the fast pace of a film, if there's no explosion or a hot chick then the movie is branded boring. 2001 isn't just a movie it is history caught on camera, this had revolutionary special effects and it should get the thanks it deserves for several other movies. Lots of people don't know that this was before Star Wars, now that's saying a lot. Now some people might have some good reasons to give this movie a low rating, yes this movie is extremely slow and they might get tired of the whole space concept over an hour, but it's all real , no CG just models and creative camera work. Some caution for first timers, people who know nothing about kubricks filming style should not see it and if your looking for lasers, light speed, crazy aliens, and wookies should not see this movie. However if you have heard about this movie and can respect it for what it is give a watch or two. Also keep the pod bay doors shut ;).

Just because a movie is a classic doesn't mean that it is necessarily good. 2001: A Space Odyssey is among the most annoying films I have ever seen. It belongs up there on a list with movies like 'The Box.' There's not much in the way of a coherent storyline, it's mostly an extremely boring film, and it's message doesn't get through. There are four parts to the movie. The first part is the monkeys. So, Kubrik begins his clearly evolutionist, sci-fi classic at the same place that many an evolutionist begins when it comes to the dawn of man. At the end of the short section, you see a monolith which, I suppose, becomes important later on, but it is never explained what the monolith is or does. Second, you have the main character in his enormous spacecraft talking with some people about some sort of outbreak. I am assuming that this has to do with the monolith, but, once again, the connection is never explained. The third section, which was actually quite brilliant and actually had a coherent plot line, was with HAL. This section (and a few other details noted later) is why the movie gets more than one star. Then comes the fourth section: the great conclusion. I couldn't have imagined a more stupid ending to a film that makes no sense than to ask even more questions. The main guy is flying in his ship down some sort of wormhole or something where there are lights of every color when, suddenly, and I emphasize that word, he's standing behind an older version of himself. Then, the older version of himself sees an even older version of himself and then repeats one more time until he sees an extremely old version of himself reaching out for the same monolith they found on the moon. Then, the movie ends with a baby in a bubble floating around the earth. NOW. I can take abstract movies. I enjoyed Tree of Life. But that is WAY too abstract and, other than the amazing special effects and effective realism of the scenes in space, this movie's not even worth watching. The best thing about it is that Karajan conducted the symphony that recorded the soundtrack. All in all, it's not worth owning. Maybe it's worth seeing once so that you can say you've seen it, but there's no reason we should lower our standards just because the movie is a classic.

Epic but weird

They were just plain weird) and if you dont understand the last part i get you. But if you didnt get the whole thing your just plain dumb. And if you dont get the last part read 2010 oddesey two and it will clear up alot.

If you are the kind of person who likes watching movies that are all just random killing and lots of cursing (which I don't have a problem with or anything) and no plot whatsoever and the movie is just action (like Avatar which totally sucked) or if you are too lazy or not smart enough 2 typ a rivew rite and u typ it like ths (like the person who posted a one star on April 20, 2010) than you will undoubtedly hate every moment of this film. However.... If you are an educated person with an appreciation for a classic film yet one that still has great picture quality and effects even today than you will most likely enjoy this movie.... You just have to be a little bit smarter than the average American. As a twelve year old, I am reading the book currently (which they don't publish any longer :( ) and I quite enjoy both the movie and what I have read of the book so far. So if you are game for a 2.5 hour movie that's only 4 dollars that you might have to watch with a friend or two to share the fun and to ask questions to (as you will all ask some questions if you haven't read the book to stay together and not get confused while watching) and you think you appreciate a good movie than scroll over and click that download button!

This is possibly the greatest piece of cinema ever created. If you "don't get it," it's because you're like 9 years old. If you don't like it because it's "too boring," you're a weak-minded fool with the attention span of a goldfish.

One of Kubrick's best. The opening is timeless and quite original.

A great great movie. Slow but powerful. Weird but genius. To some it will be boring, to most it will be epic. It's a masterful & powerfully done work of art.

The special effects in this movie in many ways out-class modern films. This was a very high-budget production and it shows. Films are no longer made like this because we no longer have this technology (much like we no longer have the technology to put man on the moon). This is a timeless, beautiful, disturbing, and cerebral masterpiece, the likes of which will likely never be repeated in human history. Some people may not 'get' it, but for those that do, it's a practically religious experience. There is a darn good reason the Library of Congress preserved this in the Nation Film Registry.

Semiotics

If you're looking for a movie to hand you its plot or makes you feel good because some flesh was exposed. Or a character came up with yet another cool way to insult someone, then this movie isn't for you.
To understand the movie, or come close to it at least, you need to understand semiotics and steganography. The way to hide symbols in things seemingly unrelated then how to decode them. This movie is a symbol fest.
Whether this film is based on The Odyssey, has some masonic meaning or is just a stoner's vision put to paper, there are themes present that can't be denied.
Not to mention Kubrick's hatred for IBM that is embodied by the H.A.L. 9000 computer. Ever notice how HAL is one letter away from IBM?
Some have picked up the book for more answers but this will be no help. The book was never mentioned in the movie. Just that Mr Clarke was involved with the screenplay. Mr Kubrick had majority control over the script so changes were made. In the end it is closer to say they're two different points of view on a similar plot.
In the end, the key is the monolith and viewers need to realize that in the opening and intermission sequence when the "monolith music" is playing, we're not actually looking at a blank screen. But rather another evolutionary step that the viewer is going through is their minds are open enough to embrace it.

One Of The Most Brilliant, Thought-Provoking Films In Cinema

"2001: A Space Odyssey" contains so much cinematic brilliance that it is one of the greatest films of all time. The professionality of the special effects are that of a film that could be made today; the innovativeness of the theme & visuals are amazing. I bought it on Blu-ray two days ago, June 22.

It helps if you think about it.

This film is not for people with short attention spans. In other words, it's not for children, teens, or most American adults. If you don't read books for pleasure, it probably is not for you. Please watch the parody from IFC's "Greg the Bunny". I had to watch this one for a class in film studies. Guy next to me said," You gotta be drunk to watch it". LOL, who the hell gets drunk to watch a movie?!!

This movie changed my life and the way I look at film. After I watched 2001 for the first time I began to learn about the art of film and watched other movies I would have never watched otherwise. Now I want to be a film director when I grow up and hope I can get into film school in college.

I can see why some people don't like this movie. I can even understand why people HATE this movie. But when I first saw it, when I was 11, it stuck in my brain. I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite. But then I watched it again. And I looked closer.
I saw it. The beginning, the monolith, the journey, the atmosphere, the pacing, HAL, the lights, the ending. They all fit together. A beautifully made movie by a amazing director. I found a deeper meaning, much bigger than some other space movie. It was barely a movie to me. It was an art. An art that has to be analyzed to see a true form. I now know what 2001 try to tell us. It is something that has to be seen to like it, or to even understand it. Watch it

People say that this movie is incredibly boring with a weak plot. Well I can see how it may seem slow, but it actually sets the mood of the film. This is not meant to be a fast paced action thriller. It is supposed to make you think about what it is getting across to you. This is one of my favorite films. Way to go Stanley Kubrick!

What *is* the Point?

I was left wondering what the point of the film is. I mean, I understood something of the basic plot; the slabs relation to life, the slab being uncovered on the moon, HAL etc... but what about the rest? It seems like the segments are very disjointed, and for all the talks of scientific accuracy, how does the guy survive jumping from the capsule, into the ship and closing the airlock? Maybe it's a good movie, as I see I'm a minority in not loving it, but I had to skip through a lot of the slower sections of music, and the 'psychadelic' part towards the end. Maybe it's just beyond me, but I don't see how this is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, let alone greatest films of all time. Still, it's kind of shameful to say you haven't seen it, with all the praise it gets.

Saw it, loved it, made a friend love it.

This movie was created in by Stanley Kubrick WHILE Arthur C Clarke was writing the book (A.K.A. they were made at the same time). If you complain that you didn't like the movie because you didn't understand it, then you are the wrong demographic than that which this movie is meant for.

An out-of-body experience ...

Kubrick is stunning. He really is. It may not be an emotional piece, but the sheer sight of this film is something. I don't know about anybody else, but these special effects astound me, and the realism of space projects itself to us. 2001 is a wonder, for sure, and one of the most overwhelming films to ever find release. It's in a class of its own.

Rent only...not worth the hard drive space.

About 1 hour to long...dull....pointless...though some of the camera work is interesting for a 40+ year old movie....does not entertain nor does it make much sense...talked to someone who saw it in theaters and though they loved the movie could not give much imput on why. Highly overrated. If you watch movies for the entertainment value as I do, look somewhere else.

"2001" is arguably the greatest film ever made. It's definitely among the greatest movies ever. Watching it I noticed how much of it has been copied by nearly every science-fiction movie that followed it. Its setting, the special effects, its style and overall look, the picture it draws of the future - it's all timeless. So is the photography and the use of music. Both groundbraking. The makers were so clever to avoid many mistakes later directors made (like having sound in space etc.). This movie is really flawless in any aspect. Great acting, too.
Unfortunately the transfer of this movie is in no way what it should be. The encoding is absolutely poor. Whenever you see dark space in this film (and as you can imagine this happens once in a while ;-)) the picture becomes awfully bad. This one needs a HD transfer from a good master, maybe the negative, and thorough encoding. The way it is presented here it's not really fun to watch this great , great film. So, three stars is all I can give for this version.

One of greatest films ever, but...

This is one of those films that really works best on a big srceen. The bigger the better. True it's slow at points. And it can be a little more than confussing at times. But it's a story that's designed to make you think. What is this all about? They do not hand you the anwser a silver platter. Unlike it's terrible sequel, 2010.
If you can see it on a real movie screen, do so. You may not understand the story any better. But, you will be blown away. It is a master piece.

The story of Man

Throughout the generally short history of film, many stories of love, war, fear, and humor have been made but few attempting to explain the story of the randomness and achievements of mankind have been made - and have been successful.
This is why "2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of the greatest films of all time. Man fights man, man makes tool, tool fights man, man fights tool, and we die. Although it is a bare summary of what our story up to now and beyond is, it is just the skeleton under the muscles and skin of a beautiful and elaborate creature that is this film. "2001" pushes the boundaries of our minds and of our world. It is a visual masterpiece that will never grow outdated or weak. Its silence is true beauty. The audience will never feel the same again.
If you are looking for a film to change the way you think of life and mankind then you have found it.

This is perhaps the first film that really pushes us to acknowledge the link between mankind's various capacities, and the journey into ourselves. To appreciate that which is imbedded in us as humans we must face the terror of our own extinction and death, which is the terror of the monolith.

Ranks to be arguably the greatest American film of all time, that visually revolutionized the technicality behind cinema and the modern art form of filmmaking. If anything that is certain, "2001: A Space Odyssey" thoroughtly examines human kind and how technology heavily affects society as a whole. Stanley Kubrick ranks from my perspective to be the greatest American Filmmaker of all time, and proves with this film in particular how much of a perfectionist he was technically and the imperative conceptual purpose this film serves. This is inevitably one of the very few films within American cinematic history not to suffer from any technical flaws, Stanley Kubrick's perfect craftsmanship here is to visually keep the viewer within awe with it's visual optimism, while he unmasks the undoubtable dependency humanity has encountered upon technology; and how he reveals that the human race is capable of greatness yet is inevitably flawed. Bottom line, this film is a cinematic landmark that confirmed Stanley Kubrick (in my opinion) as the greatest American filmmaker of all time.

Firstly, BUY THIS MOVIE! There's nothing missing any more. I bought my copy a couple of weeks ago. The problem's fixed. I saw this movie for the first time in a large dark theater by myself, when it was released in 1968. I was 10 years old at that time and a powerful impression was made on me that has lasted through today. Watching the movie many times since, I simply never grow tired of it. The movie was very well thought out, as given it was four years in the making. Watching it requires patience, but is well worth devoting the time. Also, the story is complete in itself, and I have therefore found watching the sequel "2010" was a waste of time. This movie is highly thought-provoking since it addresses mankinds most important concerns about his own existence. There are no movies to compare to this one!

I don't know how long I've been waiting for 2001 to make to the iTunes library. This ranks as one of the most visually beautiful fims I have ever seen (next to 300, Sin City, King Kong, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and The Fall). If you enjoy any genre of film in the least bit, you MUST see this masterpiece! 6/5
