Description

Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer—whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Let me tell you why it had bad reviews. The trainer hit the monkey while filming. The backlash was everyone said bad things about the movie and he ruined it for everyone. At the time there were other blockbuster movies that overshadowed speed racer. The trailer could have been better. If you grew up watching SR you will love the movie. Yes Rex racer leaves speed like in the anime but as you already know Hollywood always has to change the original story. Very colorful, great for kids, and not intended for those who are sensitive to blinking or flashing lights. I love this movie so much I re bought it in every format possible from digital download to DVD to bluray. If you see someone hating the movie it's because they were paying attention to it. Those who created the matrix saga made this movie too. 5 stars all the way.

This is definitely a great movie with lots to take in and enjoy. Yes, it is not the perfect movie but is there ever one? You don't hate first person shooter games just because they make you dizzy just as you don't hate a movie just because you can't take the graphics. Given, story and storyline isn't great, but I honestly think it is solid and entertaining. In the end, it's all down to preference. This is definitely an underrated cult classic.

My only nit-pick is that I wished Spritle and Chim-Chim had more serious fight in them. Besides that, I loved everything about this film. The cinematography and coloring are absolutely beautiful! Loved it in the theater and at home in HD.

...to the late 60's after school watching TeeVee on the UHF channels. It had everything that the original cartoon had, and stayed pretty faithful too. If the cartoon had outrageous plots, and whimsical engineering, then why can't the movie have it also.

This movie was perfect for what it is and gets better with each viewing. The original animated series was full of color, and you will never find a movie that better captures that. True to the series, this movies has great action sequences, and the races in particular are very exciting. If you buy the movie, you will replay those races again and again. I believe the movie was intended to entertain and to be fun while staying true to the series, and it did a great job in those regards. Yes, there are some silly moments and bad lines, but to abandon those would be to turn Speed Racer into something that the original series was not. I hope you will enjoy the movie and watch the fun parts again and again.

I'm giving this film a neutral rating because, in all fairness, I haven't seen it, but I feel you need to know this. The chimpanzee you see in this movie was horribly beaten and abused by its trainers during the filming process. For that reason, the film was not allowed to carry the "no animals were harmed in the making of this feature" tag. I'm not a PETA nut or anything, but abusing animals for human entertainment isn't my cup of tea.

Great visual fx. Great characters and story. This movie is really good, and yet critics gave it bad reviews. They weren't seeing this for what it was. It was a family sci fi fantasy film, and critics were reviewing it like it was supposed to be the Great American sports picture. Speaking of which, it does stand up as a good sports film, though. Its very inspiring. I almost teared up when Speed rebooted his car (music in that scene by Michael Giacchino was incredible) and was driving fast and winning and doing all those tricks. Phenomenal. So in the end, it's a fun, inventive family film with good characters and a little bit of drama and depth to it as well. : )

Watch this movie and find out for yourself just how much you'll like it. The races make you wish for your own Mach 5 or Mach 6. It's visually stunning and moving. The messages about the importance of family hearken back to the time when Speed Racer was a TV show, when families were a bit stronger and people recognized their value. This movie is among my personal all-time favorites, see if it will be for you, too.

I may be a woman and way out of the target age range, but this has to be the most addicting movie ever. I've never even seen the old cartoon. I'll give you 6 reasons to watch this.

1. The over-the-top color scheme and style of the movie are charming.

2. The action scenes are really great (as to be expected.) The seizure-inducing lights and tricked-out racing tracks will keep you on the edge of your seat.

3. This is not a confusing film by any means, but repeated viewings allow a multitude of beautiful and easily-overlooked details.

4. I felt that the acting was sincere and the writing good. Easily ran from campy to serious, to uplifting, to suspenseful . . .

5. Emile Hirsh's eyes are gorgeous.

6. This movie has an amazing amount of heart, and you will fall in the Racer family. Don't be a blind critic-follower! See it for yourself!

Finally, this is not the Matrix. Don't be disappointed if Speed doesn't start into a "bullet time" sequence. Their similarity is that the viewer approach them with an open mind.

The theatrical release of 'Speed Racer' very clearly benefited from the very high resolution typical of a theater experience. For a movie that relies so heavily on visuals, it's absolutely critical that it be presented in HD - and iTunes appears to recognize this, in offering this movie in HD...for rental on iPads or ApplteTV only. This really needs to be available in HD!

I first watched this soon after the movie came out without having ever watched the show and thought it was OK. A couple years later, after watching the entire original series a few times over with my son (and loving that more than I ever thought I could) I re-watched this movie to check for appropriateness and thought it was amazing! What a great time and a perfect modern take on the spirit of the original cartoon. Not to say you need to see the cartoon to love the movie, but the source material puts a lot of things into context and completely justifies otherwise eyebrow raising decisions. This movie will make you want to get out and drive fast!

When i saw this movie i thought it was ganna be a racing movie and not be anything like the reel speed racer but boy it hit it right on. It has romance and action and comedy. the story line is amazing and the special effects are incredable. I don't know why rotten tomato has given it a bad review cause it was really good but if u want a good re made movie buy it.

I just saw Speed Racer - after avoiding it in theaters due to the negative reviews saying it was for "10-year-olds" and even boring at that.

I am so glad I watched it anyway. Man, it was awesome! The story was great - I can't imagine what the negative folks are thinking. Uh, no, it's not On Golden Pond. It's friggin' Speed Racer. And I was impressed that the Wachowski Brothers pulled so much emotion and depth out of cartoon characters. Usually cartoon adaptations take the easy route and fall back on simplicity and 2 dimensional characters. Like the awful scooby doo and flintstones adaptations. Which is why it was so easy for me to believe the negative reviews when they came out. Confirmed my fear.

Glad to report - I was wrong, and so were the critics. 37% - insulting. This movie was great. I only hope the Wachowskis will not change their point of view due to the performance of this movie with critics - It would be tragic if they shied away from the brilliant inspiration that drove them into Speed Racer and the aesthetic sensibility it was wrapped in in the future. This was Art.

Not to mention their mockery of Christianity in the Matrix. Okay. So I really think this movie really stinks. I would rather prefer to watch the anime then this. Even though the backround of the movie was amazing, and how colorful it was. The plot was all over the place. In the beginning of the movie, you see so many flash backs that you don't know what is even going on. Literally the plot was horrible and was out of place. It had it's ups and downs. And towards the end I really wanted that movie to be over. But it still was continuing when it should have ended like 45 minutes earlier. The acting was fine, but the story was every where. Next time if the U.S. wants to make a movie based on a anime or an asain drama, stick to the plot. and don't ruin the point and the fun of a story which doesn't belong to you. make it so audiences will love the movie that they would enjoy watching the origianl one. literally this movie really did ruin the point and fun of speed racer the anime.

This film is great for kids and adults and everyone in between. It's story is geared so kids can understand what's going on and the races are a visceral, colorful trippy experience that children and even teens will love. It's got some great performances and best of all it's true to the style of the old cartoon so fans of the old show can will feel nastalgic as they watch this truely one of a kind film. I have no idea why this did so bad in theaters but I pray that it will have a great run on the home distribution front!

What some people do not realize about this movie is that it is based off of a cartoon. Now please do not get me wrong, i loved and still love the original Speed Racer show, but i mean come on, it was just that...a cartoon. The Wachowski Brothers have done an amazing job of putting together a movie, that keeps true to the cartoon, yet add new flare to it. In my opinion they have done just that. It is a visually stunning movie with a great cast and good plot. The CG animation was breathtaking. They did beyond amazing putting it all together. It just flows so smoothly and looks so beautiful. Hopefully they will be able to do a sequel....I can only wish!!!

This movie ruled, hard. Every critic picked it apart and I feel that not one of them took this movie for what it was. I'm glad to see that a lot of the reviews here are a more fair representation of what this movie actually was.

Also, the movie had a lot of good themes and anyone who didn't see that past the visual glitz of this movie was more than likely determined to not like the movie from the start. I believe this movie will be a sleeper hit for sure.

Just like Speed himself this movie was an underdog because of the way the critics beat on it, but I, who usually am not a critic-hater and take into account their opinions, felt like this movie was rolled over in light of the other movies released before and after. I can see why the critics would tear this movie apart in its outlandishness and often ridiculous moments but if you can tolerate those moments and the sometimes "kiddy" jokes you will absolutely love this movie. It is such a warm likeable movie that somehow brings the goods to the table. Full of some incredibly funny fight scenes (ninjas :D) and eye-poppingly beautiful and intense races, sometimes so fast it can be difficult to keep up with, this movie delivers everything...and features what I consider one of the best endings to a film ever. I've watched this a few times now and I can't say this enough: watch it for yourself, 90% of you, as in the ones who have their own opinion unbiased by the fact that yes, this is meant to be a "FAMILY" movie, not a kids movie, will ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE.

This is such a great movie. You completely get sucked into the characters and the whole plot. What I would recommend though is buying it on dvd or blu ray because in theaters the visual effects were AWESOME, and I think it would be worth it to spend the extra few dollars. Either way I totally suggest buying this movie. It rocks like a rock cause rocks rock yeah!

I went and saw this movie the second day it was open, a Saturday Matinee. I went with three of my friends. There were probably 10 people in the theatre, including us. The movie was terrible, the backgrounds were computer generated. Do not waste your money on a movie with the Main Character's name being Speed Racer. Oh, and a terrible plot. Only 2 stars because it's not the worst movie i've ever seen.

When this movie came out in theaters, the critics didn't have a lot of nice things to say, much of which was in response to the fact that the movie didn't make as much money as was expected, but I would encourage everyone to try it for themselves. I personally love the movie and know a lot of people who did as well (and not just because there is some serious eye candy). Although some of the race sequences were long, they were also really cool! If you want to wake up, watch this movie! The colors and sound effects are incredible, if a little over the top. Now, I'll admit, without giving away any spoilers, that the plot was more than a little far-fetched, it was still completely accessible. Further, the acting is actually in my opinion quite good. It seems that Emile Hirsch can't disappoint and the supporting cast was superb. Buy/Rent this movie! You may not like it, but you also might love it!

Matthew Fox (Racer X) is my favorite actor of all time. He's the reason I saw this movie in the first place. I knew it'd be cheesy, but I had to see it. So I did, and I LOVED it! This was by far the best movie I have seen in a very very long time. The actor choices, the story-line, the amazing mix animation and live action were all top notch. There was not a disappointing moment of this entire movie. if you haven't seen this movie I highly recommend you watch this. I also found it humorous that it is taking place in what they thought 1997 would look like in the 1960's.

The Wachowskis' love and respect for the source material is evident, even as they expertly tailor the story for the big screen. Their reimagining works especially well in the addition of Rex Racer, Speed's lost brother, as an important onscreen as well as offscreen character. Some longtime fans may quibble with the Brothers' slight tweaks to the Racer X storyline, but like the other relatively minor changes, it actually works better than the original in this context.

Meanwhile, the much-vaunted effects really are all that. The trailers did this movie no favors by making the visuals look somehow cheap and cheesy, but seeing the finished product reveals them as both visionary and thoroughly appropriate for this film, which is an anime come to life on every level.

The performances are uniformly good, but I must single out Emile Hirsch as the title character. It must have been a challenge to play an emotionally mercurial young man such as Speed (cartoon and film) without developing a bad case of Anakin Skywalker syndrome, yet Hirsch does it unselfconsciously and without a trace of off-putting whinyness or self-absorption.

As much as this movie was made for the big screen - and preferably IMAX, in which it looked glorious - the story is strong enough to carry it to a home setting. And the Blu-ray reviews have been outstanding in terms of PQ, so your home theater should get a real workout. It's been years since I've enjoyed a movie so much. Dive into Speed's world and prepare to be blown away.

Great storyline! The message in this movie I received was Speed 'making the right decisions' in the midst of all the temptations such as riches, and fame. Wachowski Brothers created another masterpiece!!!

The trailer gives the threat of action and it delivers. However the action thinly veils a truly touching movie. Lift the veil and this movie is awesome. If all you see is the action it's just a good movie with crazy psychedelic CGI. This movie also suffered from the Iron Man affect. Give it a chance.

This movie was definitely worth seeing, the reviews just didn't do it justice. Sure while some of the scenes aren’t the most realistic (scenes where its the family at home ect.) it more than makes up for it during the races. Exciting and colorful, I highly recommend this movie!

Cinematic A+ Story Line A Special Effects A+ Acting (for this sort of movie) A.... This is a must see, saw it twice in the theater and will watch again and again. Note: Do NOT play the Wii version of the game, I felt like I got my Sega Genisis out to play it... Felt bad I paid $4 to rent the video game - shame on the people that o.k.'d that. Speed Racer Movie A+ in my 42 year old opinion (male) and my 8 year olds opinion (male)... great for young and old....

This movie did not deserve half of the bad reviews it got, nor did it deserve the low turnout and box-office failure status. This movie was, without a doubt, my favorite of the summer. The story, special fx and fight scenes are all highly entertaining and it's exactly what a Speed Racer movie should be: bright, colorful, fun. You won't find Casablanca quality or The Matrix depth... but why would you look for it in a Speed Racer movie? This is just pure fun for all ages and it deserves a high DVD/download sales. I love this movie, and I hope you will too! -Vincent.

Don't believe what the critics say, judge it for yourself! If you're a fan of the original animated series, you'll love this movie! A whole lot of fun throughout, and even a few tear-jerker moments! Emile Hirsch gives a top-notch performance as Speed. Matthew Fox (Lost) is excellent as usual. And how can you go wrong with Susan Sarandon and John Goodman, both A-list actors. If you haven't seen it, give it a shot.. it really is a great movie!

I was just blown away not just at how well the Wachowski Brothers created a entertaining, engaging, heartwarming family film but also how well they created a cartoon universe in live-action. Many others have tried, they succeeded! Took my little brother to see this film and walked out getting far more than I had hoped for. Loved it so much, took my 9yr old nephew to see it at the IMAX. Congratulations Wachowski's, this film deserved to do far better in the box office than it did.

This movie is pretty much everything your inner-child could ask for in a movie. Candy- colored Hot Wheels race sequences, junior level humor, and (unfortunately for the older crowd) plenty of antics by Spritle and Chim-Chim. This combination of animation and live-action entertainment is by no means perfect, but I'm giving it five stars to hopefully offset the significant number of people who hate this movie.
