I was a freshman in high school when this came out in November 1996. I laughed, I cried, I mourned and I understood EVERYTHING - which is odd because I was 14 and had never heard anyone speak Middle English before. This movie was the beginning of my infatuation with Shakespeare (I studied to be an English teacher), movie scores (where is the score for this film on iTunes! I need it!), and Radiohead (Talk Show Host is the most perfect song ever, and Colin's fuzzy bass on Exit Music is just phenomenal). I realize that this film will constantly be compared to Zefferelli's, but it's a version for today's kids. The guns, the cars, the music - just everything about it is so fresh and new. It begs to be looked at in a contemporary style.
As for the acting - well, it's a mixed bag. I have to say that Claire Danes as Juliet is not as convincing as the other actors in the film. Leonardo DiCaprio, John Leguzamo, Jamie Kennedy are fantastic, but the scene stealers in this film are Paul Sorvino and Peter Postelthwaite, in my opinion.
The sets are amazing and the score - oh, what can I say about the score? It's fantastic. It's one of those CDs that I always have to have. Whenever it gets scratched up and can't play right anymore, I buy a new one. "Introduction to Romeo" blends that haunting riff from Talk Show Host with ambience... I can go on forever about it.
All in all, this is a 5/5 for me. And probably 1 of that 5 is purely for nostalgic reasons. I think the text works well with the 90s set and, considering the calibur of actors in this film, I think Luhrmann did an excellent job. A must watch!
