Acting Was Drier Than Dune

Sad choice of actors. The acting was drier than Dune. No feeling, and stilted, jargon-esque dialog.
David Lynch's 80's version of Dune was more authentic, more cinematic, more bold and dynamic than this plodding sleeper. Can't believe Frank Herbert's son was co-producer on this. Should have been a lot better at implementing his father's vision.
As mentioned in a comment below, I'll take the 80's version as outdated as the Fx are now, over this one.
Jodorowsky was also commissioned in the 80's to write, produce and direct a movie version, in what what would have been a fantastic realization of Dune, but that fell thru.
Villenueve shamefully created an epic fail of an epic novel.

The subtlety alone makes this a winner

It’s hard to compare this against its predecessor with the modern version contains such grand views and cinematic improvements. The acting is superb as is the deliberate storytelling that is slow walked (but never stalls) throughout each act. I’m hoping that part 2 ( and part 3?) take their time as well and we see Paul answer the call in an appropriate time. A film such as this can be bombastic and over the top - geeky. Hokey and wrapped in obscure dialog. Dune is none of these. It’s a masterpiece of the subtle that makes you believe in the premise. Well done.

First I was completely disappointed when I noted “PART ONE” and that was at 3 minutes & 12 seconds in this Epic movie and then after 2 hours 26 minutes and 53 seconds the story tells us “This is only the beginning” ….
I often wonder why there is not a “0” in the Star Rating. The actors certainly can’t be blamed …
“DUNE” David Lynch in 1984; Amazing a whole movie in 2 hours 17 minutes. I saw it 1984 if rotten tomatoes were around then I would have given ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dune is more than a feast for the eyes. It is beyond blockbuster, a true triumph in capturing the greatness of the novel. Denis did what I thought was impossible, Great performances throughout. One of the best films of the 21st Century so far. People can whine about the "unfinishedness" of the movie, but it couldn't have been done in a single film. And boring? C'mon. This was a masterpiece and exceeded my expectations in every way.

Strang how this Part one ends at almost the same point as the 1st part of the 3 part mini searies that was on the SIFI Cable network what 5 or 6 years ago and that one stuck more tothe true story line of the book. I'm a big fan of the noval DUNE, one story that I have read over 5 times in my life. I remember how when the first movie was realesed that it got bad reviews for not following the story line very well but it did a better job at it than this one has, I waited for the price to drop before I purchased it and wish now that I waited for it to go on the under $5 to buy and $0.99 to rent. When part 2 comes out I'll wait till my cable company is showing it for free. The only good aspect is having a cute actress like Zendays portray Chani.

I would rather read the book again. Paul’s hair was all over the place. When he kills someone I want to see his face not the knots In his hair. Movies need to be entertaining not just visual scenery and effects. Throw the book away and be original. Maybe break I up more suited to a HBO multi year series. Build characters add some new stories. So many good characters we get nothing. Could also be that I could barely pay attention.

It is a horrible movie aside from a handful of fight scenes. If you haven’t read the book and this is your first experience as it was mine. You will be scratching your head and wondering why you spent the money on it. If I could rate this zero stars I would.

To sum things up, they cast Josh Brolin in the role of a fellow who is also a minstrel poet. What more needs be said? They invent nonsense, they leave out key points. The producers and director of this movie clearly are not life-long Dune fans. And they do not appreciate the extremely rich and deep fictional culture that has been established in the sci-fi world for more than half a century. I'm reminded of JJ Abram blowing up Vulcan and turning Luke Skywalker into a cynical loser, and Nick Meyer turning the ST universe into a corrupt, seedy mess.
This was an enormous disappointment. The Dune miniseries continues to rule.

This movie is stunning to look and you could tell that a lot of effort was put into making this film, but it’s just so incredibly boring. Maybe they are saving all the action for the 2nd film cuz this one didn’t have it. My wife bailed halfway thru this and went to bed, my kids fell asleep on the couch watching it and I found myself struggling to stay awake by the end.

Denis Villanueve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune was lovingly crafted by someone with true reverence for the source material. The casting is fantastic and each character feels true to true to the spirit of their literary counterparts. Visually, everything feels understated and minimalistic which make the world(s) feel old and lived in. Villanueve’s true skill has always been pacing. He allows the events of the story the appropriate amount of time to play out and spends a lot of time establishing tone and setting. It feels very deliberately paced and major set pieces feel earned and sufficiently built up. I can’t wait for part 2 and 3!

My wife and I thought Dune was a very captivating movie with stunning visuals! It is also pretty intense. As others have mentioned, be prepared to have the movie end with the story unresolved as it is meant to be a multi-part movie series.

Huge fan of the Book (read it 4x now) and SciFi in general, I believe I have seen almost every movie version of Dune, and this is by far the worst and just incredibly boring,... I tried to watch it again, thinking I was wrong, because I wanted to like it,... buy I wasn't wrong,... it just goes on and on forever, flitting this way and that, missing a lot of the good parts and subplots of the book,... I was not led to feel anything for characters that were so compelling in the book. Ugg,.. !

I’ve seen some bad movies in my day. This one may be the worst. This is bad. Jar Jar Binks bad. It’s a cross between Tremors and Star Wars with some skinny dude playing the chosen one. Don’t sell me on this cat who looks like he’s 16, but fights like Chuck Norris on crack. But wait….there’s more! Part 2 is coming out soon! I’d rather clean bathrooms at Taco Bell than sit through another 2 hours of that misery.

The movie is a little frustrating for people who`ve read and love the book, but I still enjoyed it. There are lines and moment that are straight from the book, and then other way way out of order or not in the book. I can live with a female Doctor but other changes really make me ahhhhh (there are alot of those). The mini seires created by Syfi channel is way closer. That being said my hubby who has not read the book was complete immeresed and can`t wait for more.

Always nice to see how the evolution of filmmaking plays on filming Dune. IMHO, the best things about this version are the cinematography and special effects. IMHO, the movie lacks the depth and details that the first movie and miniseries had in contrast to the actual book. So many details were left out that it leaves someone unfamiliar with the book, the original movie or miniseries, completely in the dark. Since I am a fan, I’ll be looking forward to part 2. Sure hope they do a better job. I could have done a better job producing and directing this movie lol!

Perhaps people who weren't alive when the Original Dune came out don't get it, but this movie really falls short for fans of the original dune because people who enjoyed the original Dune and the Sci-Fi Version of Dune were expecting the best aspects of both of those to be manifested in this film, plus this director's take on the book encompassing all of the technology that is now available. In my opinion, this film fails to meet those expectations. And, in my opinion, the choice of the main character was not good because unlike the Paul played within the original and sc-fi versions, this character appears to be a child and not a man. Big Disappointment for me. To wait 30 years for this is just truly disappointing.

I don’t know how many times I watched the “original” Dune movie. It was dark and very different for sci-if. This Dune (2021) just rocks. It’s more like a longer version of the original. Better visuals and effects. You’ll become immersed in the world. There were some lines from the script that didn’t fit with the atmosphere of the film though. Action is great. Story is great. Visuals are great.

What’s wrong with people today leaving bad reviews because Dune Part One doesn’t cover the complete story? It’s called Dune Part One for a reason!
It’s impossible to do any justice to the source material with a single 2.5 hour film. Dune Part Two is coming out next year in 2023.

I’m a huge fan of Arrival, but lately I’ve been disappointed with Denis Villanuve (probably spelled that wrong).
The movie looks real and lived in. The sense of scale is impressive. Aesthetically, it’s a treat for the eyes.
Story-wise, I was never invested. There’s little rhythm to the flow of the film. The music felt tacked-on at times rather than cohesively integrated into the film.
Honestly, this story would be better as a television series.

Poor choices were made.

I expect a movie version of the epic which is "Dune" to protray the author's story. Having a Troubadour Warrior like Gurney Halleck that does not sing, or having a black female Liet Kynes who was the brother of Stilgar and father of Chani? Spoiler, having a final scene in which stillsuits were worn, when in the book they were not. This director is more concerned with cinematic scenes and action vs. accuracy and I can't blame him for the easy $ waiting to be made. David Lynch (Adam Smithee), even though he would love nothing more than to disassociate from his version, absolutely nailed the casting. His movie's main flaw was the "weirding modules." The scy-fy channel hit most of the story notes, but the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was & bumbling/rhyming *#!show. I'd have to rate this version somewhere between the Sci-Fy channel on the low side, and the David Lynch version on the high side. However, there remains yet to be a proper rendition of this story in my opinion.

By the way, reviewing one star based on the price is moronic. The movie was released on HBOMax same day as theaters. If they need to do this to make money back in order to make a sequel or more, then great. Also, if you don’t want to spend $30 why go to the trouble of commenting on it, just don’t do it and wait until - like every single other new release - the price is dropped later on. This does not require that much thought.
