This film surprised me and I liked it more than I expected to. It's a simple story about a high school graduate trying to follow his dream, and I think it has some realistic aspects. It shows how the protagonist tries to navigate hanging out with friends and having a girlfriend and working toward his career goal of becoming a pro skater. It captures this crucial and overwhelming moment in a young adult's life very well, and in a way that many audience members can probably relate to on at least some level; whether it's growing apart from friends or trying to choose between dreams and a guaranteed, boring job.
I love a lot of the details in this film. The camera work is creative and there are some shots that really stand out to me because of the smooth camera movement. I also love what happens to the audio in the party scene where it hones in on Michael's conversation and drowns out the loud music. This technique immerses us in Michael's discussion and emphasizes its importance. I think the significance of the shoes is very cool and I like how they are used to symbolize Michael's deteriorating relationship with his friends. Another thing I appreciate is the portrayal of religion. Many other films treat religion as if it gets in the way of what a character wants and it's cringey in my opinion because someone can be religious and still achieve their goals. But in this story, we see Michael pray a few times throughout the movie, demonstrating that he doesn't view it as an obstacle. I just really like how religion is shown as a part of Michael's life and not something negative that he tries to escape, because I hate that cliché.
I think Ryder McLaughlin is really great in the lead role as a young adult trying to find his way, and I like his character. The other actors including Miranda Cosgrove and Vince Vaughn are also amazing in their supporting roles. I honestly expected this movie to be more cringey than it was, but I found it to be a pretty well written story with good performances.
If you like Mid90s, then I highly recommend North Hollywood. It's a well told, simple story that's worth watching.
