Probably the best written film of this year, The Favourite (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos) was an absolute triumph and easily the best of Yorgos’s filmography.
The performances around the board are all great. Emma Stone (muh bae) does a fantastic job as well as Rachel Weisz, whole stole almost every scene she was in. The biggest dub goes to Olivia Colman, who has been one of my favorite actresses since I watched Broadchurch. She’s so hilarious in this movie and an absolute thrill to watch on the big screen.
Robbie Ryan (DP) creates some of the best cinematography of the year. Every shot, every frame, just gorgeous. Yorgos Mavropsaridis, a consistant editor on Lanthimos’s films, does a seriously great job here. There’s one scene in particular that stands out because of how well done it was (the mix of a cameras zoom cutting to a still shot was barely noticeable).
The Favourite’s main weakness is that it lost my interest in the last 20 minutes. “Alright that was great! Why is this still going...?” is what I found myself thinking. I understand the ending and why it kept going on, I just didn’t really like it.
Other than that last 20 minutes, I thoroughly enjoyed this film more than I thought I would. The visuals are well done and the performances are amazing. The writing is hilarious and smart, leaving me laughing out loud on several occasions.

Yorgos Lanthimos creates a world full of rich and complex characters that captivates you from beginning to end. Brilliantly acted (by all three female actresses) with both slyness and wit. For those who are looking for more than just a typical period piece, this is a must see. A much deserved recognition and appraise.
