The first entry in Universal's Dark Universe isn't the best start. Tom Cruise took a bit of a risk trying to jumpstart a new franchise and while I'm sure the franchise will continue. This movie needed to be a lot better.
There are positive things, the acting except for the comedic relief was pretty good. The effects were top notch and the action and the mummy herself were pretty good. The films plot I won't spoil but becomes a little predictable.
The main problem with the movie is the semi-generic plot and that for a monster movie, this movie has maybe one ok scare. As well as some weird creative decisions with some editing and dream/flashback sequences.
This weakens the movie as a whole, but the final product is fine, its more like a movie that if it were on cable, then I might turn it on.
In conclusion, not bad, not great, just ok. Which is not how you want to start a franchise.
