Description

The incredible untold true story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) & Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. This stunning achievement galvanized the world and inspired generations to dream big.

Wow, a really nice and inspiring movie. For those who are having a problem with "based on true events" - that's Hollywood code for, "we don't want to get sued for ripping off a storyline so good we could not come up with it ourselves". This movie does not claim to be a documentary, but an embelishment of events that lend themselves to an inspiring story. What's wrong with that?

Very good movie

This is a very good movie. Not great, but very good: good acting and it's historical. They gloss over the math, which would have made the movie more or interesting. There are very few good lines and fewer memorable moments. But the story itself is memorable. We enjoyed it.

Feel good movie around a great topic: race to the moon, female rights, racial segregation. Good acting. Gripping nerdy story flavored with a little romance. Both genders will like this one.

Most of the "facts" in this movie are GREATLY embellished, and Hollywood apparently allowed it so that more minorities would buy tickets. The fact is yes these women did some good things, but their white counterparts did just as good, if not better at the same job.
The only praise I can give is that the makers of this movie did a great job in selling tickets to minorities who need SOMETHING to believe in. They just don't care if it's true or false or, in this case, greatly exaggerated.

My grandfather worked for NASA during that time. He knew these women and the women before them. It was the culture of the time for blacks not to be seen as intelligent as whites. By the way I am white, conservative and Christian. Sorry guys this is true. The truth will comes out...always. If schools leave it out of the history books, hollywood will. Tell the truth..it will set u free.

No, you dont get to fabricate history out of thin air.

This movie is a joke. I challenge any one to look into the true events that are being presented as "true" in this film because virtually the entire move is crap. This is revisionist history garbage at its best. Just another piece of liberal garbage being churned out by Hollywood to support their divisive narrative. What a total waste of time and money

I liked the movie, however, i do feel they were not totally honest with the racism. It was much worse. Were scientists better than others? Doubtful, considering the small numbers of women allowed into their hallowed ranks.
The acting was very good, I think it's sad that we really haven't improved that much. Women are still not encouraged to take a path toward science, i think it could be the same for some people of color. People of Asian decent seem to be more prevalent than Blacks or Hispanics. So who knows how much further along we could be if everyone with an interest was encouraged to get into it?
Glad I watched it, it was inspiring.

This movie was great !!! I personally know a lot about one of the characters because my uncle worked closely with their relative. It's amazing to me how hate and passive aggressive racism have made it into the reviews. I could go on and on about the achievements African Americans have made through history that go unacknowledged. I'm not here for that. Watch the movie you will not be disappointed.

First I would like to say to the haters, doubters and debaters, visit NASA.com since you don't believe the movie is actually based on true events. Now here is my review. This is a very good movie which well documents at least 3 of the greatest minds of African American history. I can only imagine the obstacles they must have faced and endured in that time period and I am glad the movie did not dwell so much on that but on the women and their accomplishments. There are many "Hidden Figures" in history.

It's important that this movie was made, appalling that none of these women were famous before the movie came out. However, it was amazingly uninspiring as a movie, considering the subject matter. I felt it lacked depth, was just a bit too restrained, and a bit too stereotypical in the way it presented pretty much all of the characters. That being said, I'm glad I saw it and gained some understanding of just how brilliant these women were, and how groundbreaking their roles were. It should have been such a thrilling movie, but somehow, IMHO, it was not.

Movie showed real struggles these women had to face back in the days (even had to walk/run 0.5 mile to go to a colored bathroom?!?, what in the world!!!). Glad these women fought for themselves, other intimated by them due to their intelligence. and also glad the NASA director stood up for those who deserved it. Well done movie!!

The movie would have stood on its own merits without stretching the truth or creating "facts" about the space program or Project Mercury: no space flight would have ever been launched without knowing precisely its orbital path being precisely known in all aspects. The contact with the astronauts is highly unlikely.

This movie is in one word: beautiful! Outstanding performance by 3 leading black female actors, who kept me engaged from beginning to end of the movie. And that's a feat, because I don't watch movies on racism, because I find it a waste of time. There is nothing in this movie that is even remotely related to reality. If you want to understand the reality, just look up the 200 people who showed up with donkey carts, to Cape Canaveral, in 1971 to protest *against* the Apollo moon missions. That's the real story.
Let us not be so easily fooled by this fictional nonsense somehow pawning itself off as "untold history".

I enjoyed the watch, and I think Americans should never tire of reminding ourselves who we are by retelling such stories (as our capacity to do wrong home and abroad is seemingly bottomless and boundless), but I’d have appreciated a more technically accurate, faithfully dramatic, historical retelling. For example, Katherine Johnson is on record having stated that she was never aware of any racism at NASA, that ‘we were all researchers’ working on tough problems. I’m not sure the possible license taken with the subject matter serves anyone as well as a more faithful retelling would. Yet, such concerns probably pale relative to the overall context, that, yes, black women achieving scientific and leadership positions at NASA circa 1961 and on had to have been a very big deal and this movie was the first I’d heard of this landmark history.

Why isn’t Johnson mentioned in John Glenn’s John Glenn: A Memoir or Alan Shepard’s Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America’s Race to the Moon?
Why does Charles Murray not mention her in his seminal book on the Apollo program (co-authored with Katherine Murray), Apollo: Race to the Moon?
Why is Johnson not mentioned in Tom Wolfe’s epic The Right Stuff, documenting the sensational story of NASA’s first astronaut group, the all-white Mercury 7?
Why, especially oddly, is Johnson not mentioned in We Could Not Fail: The First African Americans in the Space Program?
Why was Johnson not mentioned in either Jet or Ebony magazine, two black magazines that spent the 1960s and 1970s simultaneously lamenting the lack of blacks at NASA and celebrating any minor achievements of blacks in the space program?

Everyone should see this movie.

Based on a true story of three of NASA's female scientists during segregation, it is a story woven around the lives of three brilliant women who were part of the foundation of the United State's space program. The film depicts many of the challenges that were faced not only by women, but by women of color as they tried to break into scientific careers. It is not history rewritten, it is history that has been undercovered and undervalued. It is time these women received the credit they deserve, they had equal or higher qualifications than some of their peers and often not recognized for their valuable contributions to the space race. It exposes the hard work by all those who supported the calculations and engineering troubleshooting for the nation's first manned orbit of the earth. It is not only well acted but its a fun, visually appealing and compelling story. All can find inspiration in this film, for the youth of America this movie can serve as a springboard for what kind of hard work and dedication it takes to explore new frontiers and advance human achievement. Finally, the release of this movie is timely given John Glenn's recent passing, and speaks to the character of this man who was not only one of America's great heroes but also always a first class gentleman, humble and kind.

Overall pretty good history except I doubt if only Glenn was the only astronaut who came down the line to shake hands, after all the military had been integrated since 1947. And my guess is that the IBM crew knew how to get their system set up and running without outside help.

Every white person except three, is made to look racist, or more accurately "suspicious" of any black person entering a room within NASA's walls as if they were a criminal.
This permeates every scene and overshadows the historic achievements made by great minds. I wasn't there, but I find it extremely hard to believe that such an advanced scientific community would be entirely populated by bigots.
Too bad, would have been just as effective if more subtle.

First, and this is important, for everyone here who comments that the movie is untrue or 100% fiction -- they are wrong. There are certainly some Hollywood embelishments, but the story and events are real, and you can check this online where credible publications write about the "West Computers" at NACA, which later became NASA. Most of the events in the movie are historically accurate. Look it up for yourselves if you don't believe this post. One example: John Glenn really did request that Katherine Johnson recheck and confirm the IBM calculated trajectories. This is documented.
This is such a good movie. Fascinating, well-written screenplay with no uncomfortable dead zones. It's hard to comprehend just how brilliant these women are when you're an average Joe like me, but I am in awe of them. The acting is wonderful, really heartfelt and sensitive. The production is stellar. One of the best movies I've seen this year.

acting is great - I personally Kevin Cosner steals the show with his betrayal as the leader of the 1st man orbiting the earth. But the guy who plays John Glenn, the scene where the Tarjii schools the entire engineering team on the chart board at her 1st status meeting is pure magic. The best line in the movie is when Glenn asks if the black girl is good with the trajectory and if so I'm good - totally trusted her. A amazing scene is where Tarjii's character has to run across the campus just to use the black restrooms and it was raining buckets and when she returned Cosner's character was grilling her on where she goes for 45 minute. The response is so brave and amazing but more amazing is that it was the 1st step in tearing down the predigous walls within NASA.
As a computer nerd, I smiled when the IBM computer actually arrives and Octavia has to learn Fortran lol. totally dating myself but I also learned fortran as it was part of my CS degree. So great...

Loved it and have ordered it so that I can view it at any time I wish. It's about time something other than the negative side of a people came out. I am sure there are more untold true stories of great accomplishments from people of color. I do not believe any of these negative views since they are mostly convoluted views of certain portions of society and would do or say anything to destroy a belief, including those so-called researchers. I know not everything in a Hollywood movie is fact but the general idea is always there. I sure didn't hear people talking about "Roots" not being fact. Although it was a great series, slavery and not intelligence has always been the acceptance for people of color. Nevertheless, this is a great, inspiration for all. Peace out.✌🏼
